1.0 out of 5 stars You will love big Nigel, 24 Mar. 2015
The letters EVOL in revolution are rotated to form the mirror of the word "love"...is this subliminal messaging? You will love big Nigel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful - LeCarre class work., 2 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I first saw this as a teenager and was amazed at the quality of the work compared with Le Carre's works that were televized in the 70's. Great stuff, thoroughly recommended if you like British spy-mongering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massive Eye-Opener!, 2 Aug. 2012
An excellent book which explores so much of the deep significance of the first few moments of this universe, often by considering how it is now and how it will become. The ancient arguments of "Why?", "What for?" and "Who?" (thankfully), are largely bypassed and considered from a "how!" perspective. Great book. Strongly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Film - Being BR is irrelevant, 3 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had this on DVD, I ended up with it on BR too, for complicated reasons.

It's a great film: a classic western, in fact, but I wouldn't buy it again on BR if I already had it on DVD since it won't look or sound any better than there.

Great film. Enjoy!

2.0 out of 5 stars You'd be an idiot to buy this, 3 Feb. 2012
This review is from: Above And Beyond (DVD)
The material apparently offered here is unsubstantiated and, frankly, not worth considering. I wouldn't think of buying this without better background information and neither should you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Booooooring!!!!!, 15 Jun. 2011
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
Well, after 15 years since it's development began (and 2 hours of downloading) I lasted exactly 50 minutes of game play before uninstalling it, never to be played again.

Excruciatingly long load times (not just at start up, *every* time you get killed or start a new section), weak jokes, unimpressive graphics and tedious game play.

What a huge disappointment. I wish I'd believed the reviews and saved my money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect., 9 July 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent adaptation right up to the point where they changed the ending. It is really well made, well acted, and well photographed. The violence is a little gratuitously gory at times but I'd rather that than the more common fault of making the violence sanitized, hiding it's unpleasant nature.

My one major complaint is that they changed the ending to make it easier to explain. I won't give it away here but the ending is changed in a subtle way which reduces it's effectiveness. For this reason alone it gets a 4 instead of a 5.

Think you have an opinion? Think you know? Think someone else's opinion is the truth? Read this book before you even dare to such presumption!

Virtual Reality Technology (Computer Science)
Virtual Reality Technology (Computer Science)
by Grigore C. Burdea
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £129.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful but too expensive., 24 Jan. 2008
I found this book very useful as an introduction to VR, it touched all the important topics and covered them at a good level of detail without being confusing. I don't agreee with the authors entire philosophy of VR, though their technical knowledge is very thorough and they convey that information well.

My biggest problem is that the price of the book is too high for me to recommend as an undergraduate text for my students, though we do have a few copies in the university library now as references for teaching purposes. Could we not have had a paperback edition too?

1.0 out of 5 stars Quite useless., 24 Jan. 2008
I've always been very wary of anything entitled "A Hitchhiker's Guide to..." since it immediately indicates a lack of imagination in the author(s) but I decided to give this a try as a possible course book for my undergraduate teaching in VR. I was extremely disappointed and, frankly, I can't recommend this book for anyone.

The book should really be entitled "Computer Graphics for Virtual Reality" since almost all of it is devoted to this one aspect of the subject. While I agree that this is an important area, it would be better treated by having reference books on 3D graphics, OpenGL, Real Time methods, Shader or GPU programming, and image-based rendering and lighting to accompany a book on VR which actually focusses on the real issues of VR. Good volumes already exist on each of those topics and this one text certainly isn't superior to any of them.

There are so many criticisms to be made of this book that I simply don't have time to catalogue them all but I shall summarize by saying that it is so unevenly edited as to often be incoherent, frequently so far off topic as to be confusing to a novice reader, and written by authors who clearly have only a very limited view or experience of what VR is and what it can provide to a user.

If you want to know how to do computer graphics, get some books on that. If you want a book on VR then Burdea and Coiffet's book from 2003, though far from perfect, is still far superior to this one.
