A stimulating read, 22 Nov. 2001
Ackroyd's biography on Charles Dickens is truly insightful, well researched and provides a glimpse of the imagination behind the man who brought so much to an England that was caught up in the menacing grip of its industrialization...The frequent "phrases" that the author so regularly employs in his writing style allow his text to flow in a language that suggests anything but poor revision or haste. Rather, I found this work to be at the pinnacle of academic research.
