If you love Italy and want to read about this period of the souths history read this book.
It gives you an insight into the problems faced by Italy today a north that ignores the south though fear if it was powerful it may break away again (at the time of unification Sicily and Naples were two of the most powerful states) and a south that sees the north as another invader exploiting them and using the mafia as a weapon of oppression which left men like Totto Riina feeling invincible and but for the brave few that forced the government to act by their sacrifice he almost was.
As one Italian said we've made Italy now we need to make Italians.
A great book that shows this struggle in an island where Italian is rarely spoken.

I saw this book in a Catholic book shop I can't believe they have read it.
The papacy is shown in a dreadful light by 90% of the men who held the title Pope.
It also shows how most of the people in the religious world were beaten, raped, murdered and bribed into excepting God.
This book Darwin's origin of species and Richard Dawkin's God Delusion would make up the athieist cannon it would be interesting to see argued against.

I read this book as a none believer as a friend who is a Catholic asked me to hoping I would be converted.
However this book is not a critical look at the miracles or not attributed to padre Pio it is just an acceptance of every claim by people all over the world of padre Pio's power.
If you believe you will love this if your hoping for analysis you'll be dissapointed.

This book gives not only the dark side of Sicily that is well known even if not the historic truth is not, it gives another side the bravery of Sicilians who fought the mafia while facing immense danger.
Read this book and if you don't feel for the people whose Government seems to have ignored them, leaving a few brave men to fight on facing almost certain death.
Cannot recommend this book enough.

Downloaded this on the plane before leaving,
I found it useful but not insightful, if you have time go to a book store and check out the alternatives and then slip away and download it on your Kindle.
I found there was not enough on Palermo and sourrounding area which was where I stayed, so can't comment on the rest of Sicily.

1.0 out of 5 stars OVER INDULGENT, 25 Jun. 2013

I love Italy especially the south and have also spent time with Italian families that I knew from the UK,
I was hoping to learn more about the lives of italians in this area.
Unfortunately all I really learnt is how wonderful the author and his wife think they are.
I really do not care that they spoke to a German in French and were answered in Italian.
There is a chapter called "Christmas in Sicily"
However I know nothing having read it about what Sicilians do, eat or the importance of religion in their celebrations.
Don't bother with this book go down the pub and listen to the bore who will always tell you they go off the beaten track and never do what the tourists do and saw the real country this is their book.
