4.0 out of 5 stars Great made for TV disaster film!, 23 Sep 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
10.5 was a good tv movie with dodgy effects but great acting and as I'm such a disaster movie fan, I've sat through so many weird ones that 10.5 was refreshingly good. 10.5 apolocalypse starts off exactly where the last one finished and deals with the aftermath which turns out to be even bigger.

The 10.5 earthquake signaled the start of America's tectonic plates moving back together so cue many earthquakes and volcano eruptions and many monuments being smashed to pieces for our viewing pleasure.

While there's lots of action all the way its the excellent acting that holds it all together and in a TV disaster movie it was refreshing and pleasing to see talented people and not plastic fantastic wannabes.

Made for TV movies are always subject for debate but this is one of the best ones so I'd recommend it to many.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stablity and Ease of Use Makes This Competitive, 22 Sep 2008
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Just how many times have I sworn at Pinnacle Studio 11? I lost count after about three days. Pinnacle has tons of features but no stability at all (to the point where I've stopped), Adobe Premiere crashes at the drop of a hat, Sony Vegas is stable but doesn't have nearly as many functions - I just want an editing software that's relitively easy and one that doesn't crash every five minutes.

I'd never heard of Power Director but the layout is identicle to Pinnacle, Sony and Windows Movie Maker. You import your media, drag it onto the timeline and start to play. I was delighted that key frame editing was included as it really helps create an individual movie. Some of the transitions were good but half of them were a bit cheesy and half of the picture in picture's looked very pixilated on the TV. Also again mpeg2 encoding doesn't quite come up to standard. However, once you know what's not so good, you can get your head down and create some excellent little movies. The only trouble I've encountered is I can't seem to get it to install a patch it wants me to install.

Apart from that, its a great starters product if you want to go beyond Windows Movie Maker as its clear, easy to use interface helps get you started. However after a while, you may want to step up to Sony Vegas if you want to get a bit more technical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly with Vista and is very fast too., 22 Sep 2008

I needed to upgrade my scanner as its now a crucial part of my business so I plumped with the Cannon LiDE 600 and haven't looked back.

I personally haven't used all the extra buttons on the scanner itself because the Cannoscan Toolbox works perfectly fine with Vista and after you've set up your preferences you just need to click scan and your away. The quality is excellent and 300dpi works great unless your going for a massive project scan and then I'd suggest upping it.

I haven't played with the negative scanner yet but I've read a lot of reviews saying that's great but tricky to get going with.

However if you need a personal scanner that doesn't need additional power as this one works from USB and that scans quickly (15 secs a page tops) then I highly recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Vision of Nature VS Manpower, 19 Sep 2008
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This comes from the team that made Final Fantasy Unlimited which was an anime series that done very well for itself but this is their first full length picture.

The premise is that during research where humans genetically modified plants and trees to be more productive things went wrong. The trees fought back basically and since then have waged war with humans. The remaining towns go about their business with the trees in different ways. Some fight back while others try to find a way to co-exist. However one day a cyrogentically frozen girl is discovered and when she realises that she holds the key to starting the world afresh so begins a battle to take her power away.

The animation is fantastic and is used with CGI battlecraft and light effects to give it a unique feel. The voice acting and in particular the music is well done. I'd be inclined to buy the soundtrack.

The themes may not be new but they are as important as ever and this is a fantastic opening account to Studio Gonzo's career.

4.0 out of 5 stars Requires More Skill Than Button Bashing!, 18 Sep 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Normally most Olympic video games are just button mashing games (not that there's anything wrong with that really, but my fingers hurt after Beijing on the PS3!) however this ones more balanced.

Yes you've still got some of them but the swimming events are more to do with timing and spinning the analogue sticks at a certain rhythm which I found really hard for some reason. The field events are about timing as well as button mashing and there are some other random sports too.

Overall this isn't a major step on from say Athens or Beijing but for anyone after their button mashing, simon says gameplay you get a bucket load here. Its got a nice career mode too but is best played with a multi tap!

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job but requires careful setting up, 18 Sep 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'd been thinking of getting one of these for an age but everyone's polarised reviews put me off completely. Then a few weeks ago I took the plunge as I needed it for a business venture as well as recording myself playing games.

All the dazzles appear to be the same device with different software so it doesn't matter too much which one you get - its more down the cables you buy in addition to your dazzle (they sadly don't tell you that when you buy it that you need more cables) which seems to effect the quality.

Depending on what cables you use (generally a double ended RCA cable and 3 Y Splitter AV cables [1 male to 2 female]) depends on how much lag you get. You can plug in camcorders and your TV and literally press "Start Capture" and it will record but if your recording yourself playing games you cannot just connect your console as there is about a seconds delay before you see what's happening on your PC. That's where the additional cables come in.

The software that's bundled with it is great if your looking to go into great detail with video editing but if not, you can use the Dazzle with Windows Movie Maker and the end result is fine.

What the Dazzle does is great (and if you want 60FPS there's a patch I believe) but just remember to set it up properly for what your using it for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Genre Striding Album, 18 Sep 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Me And Armini (Audio CD)
This is Emiliana Torrini's 6th album although only two were released outside Iceland. Me and Armini really bridges the gap between them with some great pop numbers and some low key acoustic tracks too. Newer to the mix is the more rockier edge in places though and it suits her voice and style.

"Big Jumps" was a great choice as a single and reminds me of summer time fun (it also reminds me of "Unemployed in Summertime" however there's absolutely genius in "Jungle Drum" which sounds like a 1960's rock anthem and will be the next single. Its very catchy.

Acoustic lovers will enjoy "Bleeder", "Hold Heart" and personal favourite "Beggar's Prayer" which has a beautiful vocal section in the middle with just humming which effects you in a brilliant way.

"Gun" shows off a more edgy side to Emiliana we've not seen for a long time as its full of atmosphere and "Ha Ha" is a darker shade of Torrini too. "Dead Duck" is a fantastic piece of studio trickery as it basically goes through all the album sounds in one song.

I would recommend this to any Torrini fan no matter which album of hers you preferred and also to anyone who likes their pop a little more involved than the usual chart toppers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Julia Marcell joins the piano pop brigade!, 4 Sep 2008
This review is from: It Might Like You (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Julia Marcell comes from the sellaband project which gives breaks to relative unknowns. An excellent concept and Julia is a deserving receiver.

Julia has a slightly cabaret feel to her piano style, like Sarah Slean's more jazzier songs however Julia keeps herself firmly in the damper darker side. There's no real single worthy song which would immediately draw you in however that doesn't mean there aren't hooks.

"Outer Space" is a dark piano/string led song while "Dancer" has a deliriously happy undertone to various foot stomping percussive beats which breaks out into a frenzy. "Side Effects of Growing Up" has a broken feel to it and stands out as the randomly off kilter track and "Carousel" has such a beautiful urgency, it whirls and whirls around like its name.

One downside though is the production. I understand that the arc of the album is that your meant to be listening through headphones but you can hear creaks and pops throughout and they sound pre-planned. It didn't work for me.

However I thoroughly enjoyed the album and its an excellent début album but definitely for those who like alt-pop over the more mainstream efforts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten gem that PS owners should try to find!, 11 Aug 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Poy Poy (Video Game)
Poy Poy is very much geared at multi-player play. You take your character, get thrown in a ring with 3 others and are at war to be the last one standing. You can punch, kick, throw bombs and rocks at each other - its all about damaging the others and not getting hit yourself. If this sounds up your street then try Blood Lines on the PS1 which I think takes the idea a step further and is more fun for it but this is still a classic game. Limited 1 player appeal, but add a friend or three and you'll be going for ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars It was bloody but it was bloody good too., 11 Aug 2008
This review is from: The Banquet [DVD] (DVD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
One thing that particularly struck me about this film over other martial art films I've seen was the amount of blood on show which I wasn't the major fan of but aside from that The Banquet is another well executed martial art film. Definitely not my favourite as I struggled initially with the story but there's some spectacular set pieces and the costumes and sets are stunning. If your a fan of genre, you should enjoy this but I wouldn't recommend it a as a starting point unless you like your movies particularly bloody.
