5.0 out of 5 stars VERR scary, intelligent horror but not for everyone., 19 Oct 2014

Really one of the scariest "found footage/mockumentaries" in a long time.

The acting is really well done, one get's the impression that they really are a family, and the presentation as a documentary, is very stylistic true as well.
Now, the mood and overall look of the movie is very dark.
Think of the original The Ring as reference.
The is not a lot of bright scenes, the characters are always quite somber and the found footage element is indeed really scary.

AND, just as you think you know where this movie is going, it brings up a final that is so creepy, I for a moment wished I'd never seen it.
It's so simple, yet perfectly done and timed, that it scared the crap out of me.

It must be said, that this is not your typical americano-horror, there are no weird noises, kids with demonic CGI faces or doors opening by them selves, this is a movie based on a dark mood, slow and creepy pacing, good acting and the best use of found footage I've seen in a while.
If you're tired of generic movies like Sinister, The Quiet Ones and Insidious, and want something very different, that watch this film.
If those are your favorite movies I just mentioned, then give this a miss.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good acting, boring story, 19 Oct 2014
This review is from: The Quiet Ones [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
I see that some of the reviews base their 4/5 stars on the acting and the set designs.
And yes, those are well done, acting is quite good, as are the characters, though a tad generic, and the surroundings a very well done, giving the impressions that this film indeed is in the 70's.
BUT, that just doesn't hide the fact, that the movie is simply just really boring.
I get that the film tries and "intelligent" approach (as another review states) but it's as if the director tried too hard.
Nothing really sets this film apart from the countless of other "possession" movies out there and that does bother me quite a bit, cause it seems like they had an OK budget and, again, good actors, to make this more original.
But no, after about an hour, the movie flatlines, nothing really happens after that and the finishing sequence is no more "scary", than what took place 20 min. earlier.
I'd say the movie is for people, who have a passing interest in horror, but for the avid horror fan, give it a miss.

I was hoping this movie would be better and that they'd gone for a little less generic final, it was all just a bit too predictable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Starts of OK, but ends up being too predictable, 28 Jan 2014
This review is from: Skinwalkers [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I like the idea of mixing up the UFO genre with Found Footage, so I was looking forward to this movie,
Story is fair and the acting is OK, but no one really stands out and the movie quickly goes very lazy and predictable.
I thought there was a great potential to this movie, but it's like they couldn't be bothered.
Watch if you REALLY like found footage and UFO films, but don't expect anything new.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUCH better than expected, 6 Jun 2013
I must admit, I did not have high hopes og expectation for this movie.

BUT, I'm happy to say, that I was pleasantly surprised!
Oblivion delivered ALL it promised and much more.
The acting is solid (some parts are a bit wodden, but it makes sense at the end), the scenery is beautiful and the story itself is fair.
While it doesn't ad anything new to the table, it's solid and I hadn't seen the twist towards the end.
And, the end of the film is quite cool, reminded me a bit of 2001: Space Oddesy!

I guess in 2013, most people have come to expect too much from alot of movies, which is unfair.
Had this movie been made in the 80's, it would be a cult-classic today!

So, fans of SciFi, you will NOT be dissappointed with this movie!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Has it's moments, but ultimately fails, 21 Mar 2013
This review is from: The Bay [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
The Bay is yet another overhyped found-footage film, that leaves you wondering how you can get those wasted 1 1/2 hrs back.

The idea behind the movie is not that bad and it starts of fair enough, but quickly you realize that there are no characters to care about and the constant cuts between cameras becomes annoying.
There are a few creepy moments in the film, hence the 2 stars, but it never gets out of second gear.

Worst of all, there is no real suspense, no actual build up and at the end, no climax or pay-off!
The movie just ends......??!
It's too bad, 'cause this movie could quite easily'd been 1000 times better, had there been more of a proper storyline and characters that you actually want to see.
I wonder if this is one of those movies that got ruined, going through development......

2.0 out of 5 stars Hopeless acting kills tension, 20 Sep 2012
This review is from: The Lost Coast Tapes [DVD] (DVD)
How someone can compare this to gems usch as Blair Witch and Trollhunter, is beyond me.
This movie is in NO way in their league.

I thought that the idea for the movie was cool and it sounded fun, so was hoping for at least a few scares.
But NO, only a few minutes into the movie, I was left dumbfounded by the bad acting.
ALL of them are terrible, their lines are delivered so scripted and forced, as if they in the back of their minds are thinking "what is this crap?"
And the actors tend to overreact to even the smallest things (the guy at the production house in the beginnig is the WORST!), so nothing comes of as even remotely realistic, as in Trollhunter, The Tunnel or Lake Mungo (all WAY better and scarier Found Footage movies).
The plot itself kindda stalls halfway through the film, but there are a couple of scenes that are cool towards the end, but that does nothing to save the film as a whole.

It's too bad, 'cause the idea had alot of potential but the outcome is below average.

1.0 out of 5 stars A complete mess, 11 July 2012
How ANYONE can give this movie more than 1 star is beyond me!?

The movie is a complete mess, with WAY to many stories going on at the same time and because of this, you end up not caring about the charachters involved.
I appreciate the serious tone in the movie, there is no comic relief, and the story itself is believable.
But we could've done without half of the stories, some of them aren't even intertwined and have no effect on the outcome of the film, so in a sense, they don't matter at all.

I was looking forward to this film, boasting an incredible line-up of actors and, of course, a respected director.
But it's clear, that CONTAGION fell to either studio politics or a director with too grand a story, impossible to squeeze into 2 hrs or however long the film was.
Either way, it's a HUGE disappointment and to put it straight, sucks!

2.0 out of 5 stars Fair build up, NO climax!!, 12 May 2012
This review is from: The Innkeepers [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I had high hopes for this movie, not just because of the cool trailer, but the story itself sounded interesting and the premise had potential for some good scares.
Now, I wil give credit to Sarah Paxton, who plays her role of a kindda hopeless, yet enthusiastic employee really well.
She's def the backbone of the film and does a good job.
BUT, the positive ends here!!
The movie plods along, telling the story of the last weekend at the hotel for the two main characters, but nothing really happenes.
The tension slooowly starts to build up up during the last 30 min., and there ARE a few good scares thrown in, but it all simply leads to nothing!
And that's the problem with this movie.
There's no pay-off, there's no real climax, there's no reason for this movie to happen!!
I seriously though that I somehow skipped a chapter or two, because the movie just ends without ANY kind of reason behind anything.

I writing this in hopes of someone telling me that the DVD I saw must've been wrong somehow, and there was a greater story to it all, but if it is what I think it is, then it's simply a movie that builds up, only to go absolutely nowhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible!!, 16 Sep 2011
This review is from: Quarantine 2 [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
Where to start with this crap?
First of, this is in NO WAY superior to Quarantine, it's a dumbed down, below average, by-the-numbers American zombie movie.

Lost is the intensity and claustrophobic feel of Quarantine, there are no characters to care about and their wooden acting does nothing to help the cause!
The zombies here aren't really the same as well, instead of charging out of nowhere, they are often hiding/awaiting to produce what I call "The American Scare" (Girl sticks her head up a hatch in the plane, only light is her torch, she sloooowly turns around and THERE is a zombie waiting.......WHY is it waiting??).
There are other chase scenes, but there is no intensity, no sense or urgence, and since you don't care for the characters, you dont' care about their fate.

The main story itself is OK, but I feel there could've been done so much more with this movie.
There seems to be no heart or will behind it, except making a buck or two off a movie (Quarantine) that was quite good and fairly original.

So, IF you feel some sort of urge to watch this.....shake it of, "Zombies on a Plane" is MUCH better and may I suggest "Rammbock/Seige of the Dead", THAT is an awesome zombie (short) movie, 110% intensity, great acting and good story
