5.0 out of 5 stars Great moviemaking, 6 Feb 2004
Forget anything negative you may have heard from "clever" critics, this is a sensational debut from young filmmaker M.Night Shyamalan.
Yes it is all a build up to a twist, but what a twist !!!
I have never watched a film with a more stunning moment of realisation than this, it only asks that you sit back and enjoy the ride, it is a piece of entertainment after all.
Add in great acting from Bruce Willis and the extrordinary Haley Joel Osment, and this is an altogether unforgetable movie.
Only one problem though .. how on earth does the director follow it up ? up till now the answer is, he can't.

5.0 out of 5 stars masterpiece, 22 Jan 2004
This review is from: Psycho (1960) [DVD] (DVD)
To compare this movie with the modern "psycho-slasher" is just plane silly. They may claim to be in the same genre but they are utterly different.
Psycho has depth, characterisation, brilliant story-telling and still manages to be more scary as well !
Then consider when it was made and what its contempory films had to offer (big rubber monsters that Dr. Who would be at home with! ) and its clear the word Masterpiece is not an exageration.
It caused a sensation on its release that no movie has ever matched before or since, and deserves to be in every D.V.D collection.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh dear !, 22 Jan 2004
This review is from: The Beach [2000] [DVD] (DVD)
Does'nt it look wonderfull .. is'nt it so boring.
Pointless drivel that says nothing and goes nowhere, I could barely last to the end.
The characters have no redeeming features and manage to make paradise a hell on earth... avoid at all costs!

5.0 out of 5 stars So good, is fawlty towers still No1 ?!, 22 Jan 2004
I never thought I would ever question Basil's position as the funniest ever T.V. creation, but boy is it close !!
Mr Gevais has appeared from knowhere and left me shellshocked, such is the brilliance of "The Office"
The very thought of David Brent leaves me with a huge grin no-matter how down I feel, and this is surely the reason comedy is so important to all of us.
Its all been said about how "Real" the characters are etc, but the real reason behind the laughter is the truly sensational performance of Ricky Gervais.
Without question the greatest comedy for 20 years, and maybe the greatest off them all, if you dont laugh out loud to this I feel very sorry for you !

5.0 out of 5 stars Britains best sit-com., 22 Jan 2004
This is one of those shows that EVERYBODY knows. I was a teenager at the time of its first showing and it was THE "must see" programme of the week, a brilliantly scripted farce with a central character that can be compared to any of the great comic creations.
For me it is The best British sit-com of them all ( and there are many worthy contenders ) and one of the few to have a true comic genius at its heart, both in writing and performing terms.
This D.V.D. has its faults, as has been said the standard of interviewing on the extras disc is embarisingly bad, but having every episode ever made in one package makes this a must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond brilliant ... 11 !!, 19 Jan 2004
If you are around 40 and therefore were a teenager just getting into music at the advent of heavy metal, congratulations !! You have just discovered your HOLY GRAIL !!
This movie is, particularly to us that remember how to play the air guitar, the most hysterical film ever made !
It follows the American "tour" of Britains loudest rock band, a group of such awesome pretentiousness ... well you just have to see it to believe it !
The brilliance of the actors who are Canadian and American is uncanny, surely they are a real English band ?? !!
And the music which they wrote and performed is so good it would have topped the rock charts in 1975 !!
If by some quirk of fate you have never seen "Tap" be prepared to role around the floor in helpless laughter, and burst into giggles for weeks afterwards !
The same team have made other films worthy since, but nothing can or ever will get close to this masterpiece, and I mean MASTERPIECE, It is regarded by many critics as the funniest film ever made..... I 'aint goin to argue !

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliance on a budget, 19 Jan 2004
This review is from: Alien [DVD] [1979] (DVD)
This superb film makes a mockery out of the "megabuck" sci-fi attempts that have followed it, including I'm afraid its own follow-ups.
I can remember watching it in the cinema when it came out and therein lies the only problem, it is far better watched on the big screen.
Its portrayal of a spaceship as a Damp and grimy hulk was a revelation at the time when white plastic and spandex suits were what the future was supposed to look like !
All made on a small budget in the U.K. it is simply the best sci-fi horror ever made.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterclass in moviemaking, 17 Jan 2004
This review is from: 12 Angry Men [DVD] [1957] (DVD)
This is the story of 12 jurors in a sweltering New York juryroom deciding the fate of a teenage boy accused of murdering his father. Not much to get exited about on the surface you may think, so why when all the great action movies and brilliant thrillers are forgotten does this stand alone as my favorite movie of all time ?
Quite simply director Sidney Lumet manages to cram more thrills and tension into every scene of this brilliant film than a whole shelfull of blockbusters.
The acting is as near perfect as it gets, with superb performances from Lee J Cob and Ed Begly in particular. The action takes place in 2 rooms, not 1 as often reported ( there is a scene in the adjacent washroom ) but the claustrophobia of the setting never limits the film in any way, and makes a mockery of the "big budget locations" many films need to sustain interest. No explosions no car-chases, just human feelings streched to breaking point in an atmosphere you would need a sharp knife to cut.
This DVD version is sadly lacking in any but the most basic extras, but the film is such a Tour-de-force it is a must buy,If you love films watch this now !
