5.0 out of 5 stars Baby Names 2013, 8 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Baby Names 2013 (Paperback)
We had a lot of problems deciding on a name and then my best friend called her baby the only one we both liked! This was one of the books we got to help and it was by far the best. It's not just a list of names, it has a section at the start about popular names at the moment so you don't end up with the same name as everyone else! There's also information about popular names in other countries and religions, good and bad celebrity names and names from history. The section on how to name a baby was also really good- as it includes ideas about middle names, initials and combinations of names and surnames so in the end we agreed on names we both liked. I'd really recommend this book to anyone struggling with naming- it's such a difficult thing to do and people get really upset and involved about it and this book gives you lots of help with that as well as lists of suggestions. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good pictures!, 13 Sept. 2012
I'm not sure what happened to the other reviewer but my kindle edition had plenty of clear, useful pictures to guide through casting on, basic stitches and then binding ends and more complicated jobs as well. I'm a total beginner and found it a good starting point as it has loads of info about materials and equipment too. I was interested in the chapter about the history of stitches and styles and there are also photographs of projects later on, like patterned handwarmers which I made and love! I'd recommend trying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surviving Baby Books, 23 Aug. 2012
This review is from: First-time Mum (Paperback)
In the intro to this book Hollie Smith says that her 'advice is rarely definitive or prescriptive: there's a good reason for that, all babies are different, and so are all mums.' This book continues in this tone, it's friendly and includes loads of comments from other mums with very varied experiences, which is enormously reassuring. It covers all the key stages of life for the first year with a newborn (for them, sleeping, feeding, health and safety and for you, what's necessary to buy and how to remain happy and healthy)alongside lots of options for dealing with these. There are plenty of organisations and groups listed in the text to go to for extra help or shopping, and there's a 'useful contacts' section in the back that extends this. Although there are dozens of instruction guides for aspects of baby care- like weaning- these are often rather specific and sometimes unsympathetic. Having all this practical information in one place in a non-judgemental way really addresses your worries as a first time mum.

4.0 out of 5 stars Maybe it's because I'm a Londoner..., 14 Aug. 2012
Despite being a Londoner I still find the city a complicated beast, so I try to fit in some exploring around the everyday. I used this book to look up walks in my local area (they're handily organised into North/ South/ East/ West sections) and I found the beautifully illustrated maps easy to follow. The book contains tonnes of facts that you can pick through- I was most interested in the history- although the guide to the various regimental guards of the royal palaces in the latter was useful too.

Local knowledge is learned and these books help direct even quite settled Londoners to places and areas they may well never have been taught about. They're easy to use and will encourage you to see your day-to-day differently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dads, read this!, 16 Feb. 2012
I got this for my partner (he's read Pregnancy for Men too) and he's really enjoying it, so I had a look too! It's really funny and honest, full of other dad's thoughts as their little one is growing up, but it also discusses all the serious bits and pieces from looking after mum (very important!) to the debate about dummies and what to do if dad feels second best. Really great.

Start Your Own Business 2012: How to Plan, Fund and Set Up Your Business (Startups)
by Ian Whiteling
Edition: Paperback
Price: £17.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Start Your Own Business, 7 Feb. 2012
I found this book quite inspiring without being patronising like some other start up books. It covers everything right from the first stages of getting your idea in order to the specifics of writing a business plan, branding and even going into detail about hiring employees and your role as employer. I also found the part about the average entrepreneur very interesting. Very comprehensive and highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good value, 3 Jan. 2012
The stroller's very lightweight, easy to store away and is at a good price. It's safe and secure for days out but you might want a cover for rain or a seat that reclines. But for a secondary stroller or travel stroller I'd really recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Numeracy Tests, 14 Dec. 2011
Good preparation and simple instructions which will help you pass the tests. The questions are realistic and similar to the ones that were in my numeracy test.

The insider info was also really instructive - I hadn't taken a maths test in a long time so was pretty nervous but this book pointed me in the right direction. Set out really clearly and is very user friendly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Helping you get a career, 25 Nov. 2011
This book doesn't just look at your job but your whole work-life balance covering your family, finances, health too. It helps you think about what you want to get out of your job on a day-to-day basis such as actually leaving work on time and saying no to demanding people. There is some great charts and checklists, in particular the age timeline which helps you see your career as a whole, where you've been and what you want to do in the future. I was able to recognise when I was most happy in my career and why. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift, 9 Nov. 2011
I love little gift books and was given this one just before my wedding and it was such a sweet gift. The book is gorgeous (hardback with dust-cover) and full of fun facts and helpful hints. It's got some great money saving ideas and a great bit about dates to avoid (don't bother even trying to book it the same day as the football world cup final!). Also great ideas for food and drink and how you don't have to serve the same old thing as everyone else. Great gift for anyone getting married.
