5.0 out of 5 stars Sorrow in Love, 11 Jun 2010
This review is from: Whatever You Love (Paperback)
The synopsis reads: Two police officers knock on Laura's door and her life changes forever. they tell her that her nine-year old daughter Betty has been hit by a car and killed. When justice is slow to arrive, Laura decides to take her own revenge and begins to track down the man responsible.'

Whatever component of the classic revenge tale you hold dear, author Louise Doughty will track it down and take it away from you. Whatever You Love subverts the cliches upon which most revenge plots are based - everyday man turned blood-lusty antihero by a heinous miscarriage of justic - by denying its narrative a singular focus of revenge. Instead, Doughty crashes into preoccupations of love, lust, hurt, loss, jealously, delusional states of mind, paranoia, fear, self-disgust and, yes, revenge as ceaselessly as the waves crash into the cliffs near where Laura lives and is so perversely drawn.

Like an infected wound, one jaw-clenchingly sorrowful theme seeps and oozes another and nothing can stem the flow. And this is what makes Whatever You Love such an utterly compelling read. Its almost satirically reticent to draw any conclusions. Why? Maybe because we can find comfort in the closed and contained nature of conclusions. Conclusions hold the promise of new beginnings. Doughty, I feel, doesn't want us to be cacooned from hurt in any way. After all, what comfort and protection does a mother savagely bereft of her child have?

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly inspiring masterpiece, 6 July 2004
This review is from: Vernon God Little (Paperback)
I really don't know what some of the people who've given this book bad reviews are on about! It is a fantastic read, keeps you gripped to the very end and you have no clue what is going to happen until the very last page.
The style of DBC Pierre's writing is phenomenal and his metaphors are truly original. The tone of voice causes emotional rollercoasters, moving swiftly but effortlessly from anger to saddness to light-heartedness.
It is by far the most exciting Booker Prize winner for many years and is so true to the modern world that it is scary. I wouldn't be surprised if this was to become a mandatory read in schools, taking its place next to titles such as 'The Catcher in the Rye' and '1984'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone with PCOS!, 21 Jan 2004
As someone who has recently been diagnosed with PCOS, I decided to look for information about the condition on the internet. To my dismay, it all sounded absolutely terrifying, so I decided to contact my gynaecologist for more information. She pointed this book out to me and I have now realised that the internet is full of misconceptions and that PCOS is a condition which can be easily alleviated.
The writer herself has PCOS and has great understanding of the symptoms, and the short testimonials throughout the book give you the willpower to do something about it. The book includes in-depth information about food groups and what to look for exactly when putting a meal together. It is really easy to follow the tips and there are no strange or hard to find foods in it.
All in all, this is a must read for anyone with PCOS whether they are trying to get pregnant, lose weight or just learn to live more healthily with the condition.
