5.0 out of 5 stars In depth look at wannabees, 3 Mar 2014

This book shows just how, in the early days before the release of secret files, people could manipulate their involvement in the 2nd WW. To my generation it was enough that they at least "did their bit" to elaborate is human, to blatently fabricate is both wrong and damaging to the history of our agents. There are many many books now on the SOE (my particular obsession) SIS, MI5/6 etc that have been researched and checked, as has Nigel Wests book, and all make fascinating reading. This book is well worth the read if only to steer you clear of the "wannabees".

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad times., 27 Sep 2013

So much was happening in Europe after France's liberation. Amazing to see how history was re-written by many of the French to hide the level of collaboration that actually happened. My thing is the SOE and to read De Gaulles reasons for telling agents they were no longer wanted in France was shocking. An in depth explanation of a bleak period in France's history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Watch, Atrocious Delivery., 27 Sep 2013

The watch is big and chunky and the leather strap will need softening but a cracking buy. You may want to opt for one of the "pay for" delivery options, I ordered on 13th Sept, opted for free delivery as it was estimated as 17th-20th. I received an email on the 20th to tell me it had just been dispatched!! Spent a dive weekend without my new watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Were their deaths a forgone conclusion?, 8 Oct 2012

Another good book about some of the bravest people in WW2.
Reading between the lines (and cross referencing) some of these brave souls were comprimised before they they even left safe soil. Some of Buckmasters comments when the agents were captured on landing are atrocious, he seemed to focus on them not being able to do their duty as opposed to what they were about to endure, torture, deprevation and if they were "lucky" a bullet in the back of their neck, the other way the were murdered was by hanging. By piano wire.
The book has a good foreword to bring readers up to speed and then has short succinct sections on each of the agents that perished, their objectives, where they were caught/tortured/killed.
A well written, often sad, book.

Death In The City Of Light: The True Story of the Serial Killer Who Terrorised Wartime Paris

Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Was it Murder?, 8 Oct 2012

A very good read, but does leave some questions unanswered. Most other books I've read on Petiot had him guilty in the first chapter! At least this book gives him the benifit of doubt THEN takes his story apart. All my other books on SOE, SIS, F Section and RF section etc never mention "his" resistance unit (but to be fair unknown units are still coming to light) and the author had access to the police criminal files for the first time; one would assume if there were any truth in Petiot's claims, David King would have found them. The bibliography points to many more books showing the depth of the collaboration between many of the French and the Nazi regime.
Read it!
