It has all the ingredients necessary for a gripping read - drama, suspense, a delicate love story. Don't miss it!

Saint Peter's: The story of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome
Saint Peter's: The story of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome
by James Lees-Milne
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars For the serious traveller, 30 Jan. 2013

This has long been out of print but is arguably the best introduction to the most famous basilica in the world. I have my own treasured copy and bought this as a present for a friend who was going to Rome. She and her daughter read it before they went and again when they came back - recommendation enough.

They cuts easily to size and I used them inside slippers to cushion my rather tender feet; they provided a fair degree of comfort.

The Hermit Of Eyton Forest: 14 (Cadfael Chronicles)
by Ellis Peters
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars More great Cadfael, 30 Jan. 2013

Although the ingredients of Ellis Peters' Cadfael stories are predictable - drama, suspense, a delicate love story - she always produced an unmissable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet more Cadfael, 30 Jan. 2013

This must be read after 'The Potter's Field'. This one has all the usual ingredients and some delightfully understated humour.

A River in the Sky (Amelia Peabody)
A River in the Sky (Amelia Peabody)
by Elizabeth Peters
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Back in Egypt ..., 30 Jan. 2013

This takes some getting used to, because it has to be fitted into its correct chronological slot in the Peabody/Emerson family saga. But it is vintage Elizabeth Peters - well worth reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thermal blind, 21 Jan. 2011
It does just what you would expect: keeps the cold out and also unwanted lights - street, cars, even natural daylight. The strong aluminium core will, I hope, prevent it sagging in the middle. Perhaps because it has been stored upright and is of such good quality and therefore heavy, it tends to hang crooked - all the seven I have installed are the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Southeast England comfort, 16 Dec. 2010
An excellent buy for the chilly nights of late autumn and early winter in this part of the country. Other reviews recommend it for children; I recommend it for adults like me who are allergic to feathers. It is also very pleasantly light in weight.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ivory Dagger, 2 Dec. 2009
This review is from: The Ivory Dagger (Paperback)
The 'heroinwe' is without doubt one of Patricia Wentworth's most tiresome characters - could any girl, even in the 1930s, be that stupid and spineless? The other characters are lively and often convincing and the plot is great fun with lots of twists and turns. Although this book, like many of her others, was written in the early 1950s, the flavour is as always convincingly pre-Second World War.
The critics' reviews published inside the back covers of this series speak of Patricia Wentworth's 'well written' books; to me at least her style is often stilted and sometimes clumsy.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Benevent Treasure, 2 Dec. 2009
My old collection of 'Miss Silver' books fell to pieces years ago so I was glad to find that they had been reissued. Miss Silver herself is a pale shadow of Miss Marple and has really irritating mannerisms, notably her cough and her eternal knitting. The characters are almost credible but the real strength is the plot: gripping and well resolved.
