3.0 out of 5 stars Not as HPL as it sounds!, 25 April 2014

Lumley has written some great Cthulhu Mythos stuff. This, alas, isn't it. There's very little of the Mythos in here; what there is, instead, is a collection of short stories set on a pre-Atlantean lost continent. It reads far more like a cross between Robert E. Howard and L. Sprague de Camp. Expect wily sorcerers, roistering barbarians, capricious rulers… that sort of thing. It's all pretty well done, written in a cod-archaic style of which HPL might well have approved. But if you're actually expecting much in the way of unspeakable intelligences from beyond the stars, you'd do better elsewhere.

It may not have big-name appeal, but it works just fine and it actually turned up slightly head of time - just in time for my son's birthday, phew! The saving over big-name providers isn't massive but it's worthwhile.

Well, there's 77p I'll never see again. I was expecting, from the product description, maybe a novella or short story that filled in some plot holes. Instead, this is a bizarre and rather angry defence of a proposition about those plot holes. The enthusiasm is commendable; its impact on sentence structure isn't. Poorly crafted and aggressive, this screed really belongs on a forum, not for sale to the public.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cracking stuff, 24 Mar 2013
Hemplow has HPL's ear for the outlandish combined with a thoroughly modern grasp of thriller pacing. This really works - not just a pastiche but a highly effective contribution to the mythos.

3.0 out of 5 stars Think I must be too much of a dummy.., 15 Jan 2013

I bought the book because - as a self-empoyed sole trader - I realised I really need to get a handle on the books. And it's a good product: it's very full and it explains the basic concepts clearly. I set out with high hopes...

...but soon realised that this book was not aimed at me. Or, at least, a lot of it wasn't. Sections on payroll and stock control (I'm a writer) and who knows what-all else... I'm afraid it got a bit overwhelming.

I think if you're going to be doing the books for a small conventional business or you're looking to add bookkeeping to existing administrative skills, this book would be a cracking place to start. But as a sole trader in the service sector with no employees and no stock, it make mi brane hert.
