5.0 out of 5 stars best hippie group in 1969, 4 Dec 2012
This review is from: Volunteers (Audio CD)
The hippie movement now seems quaint and even foolish. "lets take tons of drugs and the wrold will change!" lol, however they made some great tunes and this was one of the best of 1969's hippie discs. The songs are great enough and done by great musicians so it doesn't matter that the song 'volunteers' is silly today. (let's have a revolution !) It's still a good song though. I have everything this band put out and that's alot and this is one of their best releases ever. It's focused musically and features fine songs like: "turn my life down", 'wooden ships' and others that are just good songs and have nothing to do with trying to overthrow the government and crap. By this time maybe they were realizing the awful truth that they needed to change things and a bunch of wasted people can't change anything!. Still, song wise this doesn't have a bad song on it. Even out of it's time , it's still a wonderful group of songs and that's the main point. It's not harder psych rock like 'crown of creation' which is heavier and less musical , it's a soaring group of songs. And the extras are good songs too. within six months people were waking up and the ideas of violent overthrow were thankfully left behind in most music , but the good songs live on.

3.0 out of 5 stars naz. pulls back a bit., 3 Dec 2012
This review is from: The Fool Circle (Audio CD)
Their previous release 'malice in wonderland' is a true classic rock cd. This one however seemed lacking punch in many ways. It's a average naz release and coming after 8 great ones it's easy to see some steam go out of the group. Their next one 2xs is a much better release even if it's more new wavy. I like this one and I actually own 2 different copies of this on cd. (for the bonus tracks which are different) but it's a very average release from this great band. I have all of this bands releases and that's alot. In fact their new one 'big dogz' is outstanding! this one is not bad, I liked alot of their 80's output actually but it's just lacking in great songs, the songs here though are good , better than some hard rock bands releases for sure. I just wouldn't rate it any higher than 'no jive' probably. Completists like me have it but hard rock fans may want to get this one after you get their 72-80 output.

3.0 out of 5 stars their most average release., 3 Dec 2012
This review is from: Highway (Audio CD)
I love free, they were an outstanding band, and so is bad company. I have all of each groups releases. This was following the great 'fire and water' and for some reason they produced a very mellow effort here. It is a very good mellow rocker but that makes it a average free cd. Still a average free release is better than some bands best. So the 3 stars is in comparison to other free releases and not in comparison to inferior groups releases. The songs here are well crafted and good and the extra tracks are manhy and well mixed. Non free fans will want to get this one last probably. I like this though , and so do most free fans that's why there are no low ratings. I actually bought this off amazon.com too.

5.0 out of 5 stars ace is back on top, 3 Dec 2012
This review is from: Anomaly (Dig) (Audio CD)
I saw the tour in support of this and bought this cd too, and ace laid down some impressive guitar work. He played several songs off this release and it was his first solo release in over a decade. There are several good instrumentals on this one and other good tracks as well. I like it as much as earlier ace releases and it's stronger than his last two solo efforts for sure. This is for kiss fans and for fans of very well made melodic metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best of that year., 1 Dec 2012
This review is from: Distant Light (Audio CD)
The hollies had been making some great discs for years. Even their pop classic 'hollies sing hollies' is full of great pop songs. But this one and the one following it were very good rock cd's. This was perhaps one of the best rock releases out in 1971 and that is saying alot in a era of truly great music. Musicians were artists then and this one was a master crafted work with fantastic songs on it. the harmonies are of course more powerful than most groups as usual but this is a very mature rock work. Their next three were on this level too. But it was alan clarkes last one for 3 years and that was not a good thing for the hollies career. This remains a well made group of songs that were done by a band trying to make a great rock cd and they succeeded. It's prog rock even to a degree on a few tracks. This is worth owning if you love music from this era and as time goes on this is the music that will survive unlike the sad electronic junk of the less talented bozos who are often played today.

5.0 out of 5 stars great rock from 65., 30 Nov 2012
This review is from: Hollies (Audio CD)
The hollies had been around for two years in 1965, which made them one of the first of the british bands that swept the world in fame. By this time they were much more accomplished than in the past and music had changed alot in that two years. It was similiar but more complex and the hollies were writing some fantastic songs that are much more well put together at this point. "so lonely' could be a hit single in any nonelectronic music radio station even today. There's alot of great songs and melodies here. The hollies harmonize and play their instruments well. They were evolving of course and music was changing alot by this point. They were right on line with that change too. This is a fine group of songs from that period of music and it even has a the classic songs 'very last day' done rock n roll style. Few bands made as many albums that were wo well played and sung and that is why they are in the hall of fame. I have this version with it's stereo versions and then mono versions on it. The sound is awesome and these were not cheap cd's back when they came out, emi did a fine job of remastering them.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid live recording from 1968 era, 26 Nov 2012
This review is from: Undead (Audio CD)
This version has 9 tracks instead of the five on the original and is the one you should get. (2006) version. As many others have stated the band really came alive on this one with their blend of hard rockin blues and even a whiff of jazz influence. THis still wasn't the great psych hard rock protometal band of just a year later but it was excellent music. It was strange that this was their second release ,coming a year after their debut. Their studio second release would come later , to be followed by the explosive 'sssh'. Still this is a fantastic live recording of true powerful musicians who were more than just straight rockers to be sure. In a earlier age these guys would have been a jazz combo. They can let loose a free form like that if they want. I have everything this band put out and many lee solo efforts and I can tell you that this is great and it reflects 1968 in a good way that still sounds interesting and jamming.

4.0 out of 5 stars hard rock circa 1967, 25 Nov 2012
This review is from: Ten Years After (Audio CD)
In 1967 there was a incredible new live group called 'ten years after' they were similiar in style to Cream, or savoy brown, and others of the day. But like savoy brown they were a sped up electric blues rockin band. Only they played faster and wilder. This was a really good starting point and in 1968 it rocked hard. One must put these releases into the time period they were released and not todays scene. This was a strong blues rockin early hard rocker. But it's not like the hard rock psych rock that was protometal they created from 1969 onward. IN 1967 though this was as good as any harder band out there and there's no pop in this one at all. I like pop but these guys charged out of the gate as a all blues hard rock outfit from the getgo. The sound is clear and well recorded. I like this early hard rock stuff and it compares favorablely with john mayall, savoy brown, the yardbirds and others. The two star guy is not looking at the year this was out. He only likes later types of hard rock obviously which is a shame. thankfully, I like this early hard rock and it's very blues driven. If you like the music scene of the midsixties then this is a example of what was blues hard rock of that period. They would explode into some fantastic real hard rock that is psych even in just two years time. Alvin lee though was a smokin guitarist. He later made the mistake of toning it down after he left ten years after. Still for 1967 this was wonderful music. It's of it's time though and it was a good time.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent series based on fairy tales and strong characters., 25 Nov 2012
I didn't think this had a chance when it first started , but it's a big success and it's even better in it's second series. This one looks great on blu ray and it has good extra features. The cast in this one is a really good one. They help weave the intricate back and forth storylines of the many characters in this show. That helps to make this one of the largest in depth character shows since lost. The interplay between the past and present is quite interesting and the struggle to wake up the townspeople to who they really are is well worth the payoff. In fact they could have kept the storyline going for one more series but decided to open it up , which took guts to be sure. The fairy tale storys are interwoven with lewis carrol stories as well as peter pan stories. They haven't added the 'wizard of oz' yet though! Still this is a adult drama and characters do die and have to deal with their relationships as well. This one beat the odds to become a hit and it deserves that status. The effects are top notch too. and thanks to the state of technology today more and more shows monsters and such look real or close to real. They couldn't have done this show justice 10 years ago tech wise. I can only imagine what is coming in the future. At least we have this fine show to watch that will hopefully enchant us for many seasons to come! the blu ray is way up in quality as far compared to the dvd set. Get it because this show is filled with beautiful vistas and scenery etc and dvd just won't cut it.

3.0 out of 5 stars decent new version of the cult classic., 22 Nov 2012
This is a decent more serious version of the hit show. But it lacks the style that mad the original so famous. The earlier show was of it's time and place. In fact the original show actually helped save Miami! The pastel decor and rebuilding of sets helped the beach areas recover and become what it is today. In reality the city was in trouble back then and out of control due to the drug wars. Now it's a whole other place. The acting is here is good but not either of these leading mans best for sure. Still it's a good cop movie on it's own. It needed more style perhaps but then the 80's were long gone by this time. And some shows you just can't go back too unless they are made about the time they originally existed in. This was one of those probably. I actually own this blu ray and it looks good. After all this is newer film and it should! I don't agree that the dvd is a better looking deal at all. If you want this get the blu ray. Downloading does not have the quality of a good blu ray.
