5.0 out of 5 stars great prog metal rock still sounds powerful., 30 Aug 2012
Ritchie blackmore and bailed on deep purple and they then released two metal discs with a funk element to them. Which alienated some people. At the same time he formed this band and it was very deep purplesque but also quite different. It's more prog rock at this stage than most of purples stuff. This would change as they become more straight melodic metal and more accesible to radio hit singles on some songs. At this point , this had a good yardbirds cover on it even. (still i'm sad) and a version of king henry the 8th's "greensleeves". In america the song 'man on the silver mountain' was a radio fm hit. So deep purple and prog metal fans were aware of this band from this one onward. DIO becomes DIO here, a heavy metal singer , before that he was in a rock band 'elf' which is your standard blues band and he had been around since the 60's even. But with this one his image and style was really born and he would become a true legend. (rip). I love both sides of rainbow because I love prog metal and love the more commercial style they did later , I can enjoy all of this bands releases up to their mid80's demise. by then joe lynn turner was the lead singer and that's another story. But this one is a classic prog metal cd. So get it.

3.0 out of 5 stars average horror thriller good blu ray., 30 Aug 2012
At this point most of us have seen about every type of horror and thriller out there. Still this is a average one featuring teens who go looking for ghosts in a funeral home , there's a psycho in there of course and bodies etc. Dennis Quaid plays the bad guy. Which he has rarely ever done (if ever!), but he was a major leading man back in the day , so he was usually cast as the hero. This was only at the theatres for month in a limited release. But that's still better than most 58 year old actors get. The film looks great on blu ray and there is a documentary on the making of this movie. This is a average thriller or horror flick take your pick. It's ok and cast does a good job with a average script too. In fact we do have one supernatural scene in this movie where a kid sees death take his sister away. (in a flashback) but other than that this is a straight thriller and you know who the killer is from the first scene. So it is what is. Nothing special, and I think dennis did a good job with his role.

Sheer Greed

4.0 out of 5 stars girl rocks 1980 with a future def leppard member., 28 Aug 2012
This review is from: Sheer Greed (Audio CD)
Girl was around for three years. And their name was terrible. Better to have called themselves the cabbage people than 'girl'. The music is good though , tight late seventies/1980 metal. Influenced by Kiss , angel, ufo and other acts of the era. The lead singer would go on to become the lead singer of L.A. Guns and the guitarist would join def leppard in a year or so after this one. This is good melodic metal from a bunch of young guys who were mostly younger than 20. the whole name and makeup thing didn't help them though. But for those of us who heard them and enjoyed this type of metal, we had to grab this one. It's got a cover a kiss song on here. if only they had done some other kind of makeup! But other bands of the era took notice because you don't get into to successful bands if you suck. This has no bonus tracks on it but it's hard to find now sadly. they put out two other releases before disbanding and two live cd's came out in the 00's. This one went to number 33 on the uk. charts and a similiar number overseas. But their next two didn't go very far.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok knockoff treats military people with respect, 28 Aug 2012
This review is from: American Warships [DVD] (DVD)
The actors in this one did a fine job on the small budget they had. Mario Peebles is a very believable and heroic captain the u.s. Iowa. Asylum is a low budget made to dvd company that makes lots of horror and sci fi flicks. The effects standards are similiar to the scy fy channels movies. BUt not the scy fy tv series which are first class and far more is put into those efforts. Many asylum movies premiere on that channel of course , this one is very family friendly and it's got plenty of action. It's got above average effects for a asylum movie too. Usually they are not this good. So even a non low budget scy fy movie watcher should find this enjoyable. It's patriotic and it does feature the u.s. Iowa , stock footage is used probably from another movie too. But thanks to mario peebles and the other leads you get a better performance level than usual too. So non fans of cheap sci fi will knock this one LESS than usual because it's like a war movie in some regards and it treats military people with RESPECT. Unlike true crap , like 'the generals daughter' which was a alist movie did.

5.0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece of supernatural metal., 26 Aug 2012
This review is from: Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (Audio CD)
This band was never satanic , they just liked horror movies! However this one really just creates a fine work here of supernatural inspired metal. the riffs are hard and yet their is some expirementation. This was still a band firing on all cylinders and exhaustion and excess have not taken their toll. It's the fifth in a line of truly classic releases. releases that created a whole subgenre of metal , and influenced all that was too come in harder metal. "sabbath bloody sabbath' and other songs are very powerful here and the band once again tackles drug abuse in a song. Rightly they could see how SATANIC and EVIL the drug culture really is. After all more people have died from drug abuse and crime connected to drugs than in the wars the u.s. or uk fought in the last 50 years easily!. Imo opinion metal was never better than the period from 1970-1991. after that it became too thrashy for me on the radio at least. (once the classic metal sound was abandoned half off all radio stations playing hard rock vanished too. As well as most of the female listener ship. Who wants to listen to death metal that long? zzzzzzzzzzzzz.... anyways this one is good metal and it's a classic so get it.

3.0 out of 5 stars melodic metal instead of hard metal., 26 Aug 2012
This review is from: Technical Ecstasy (Audio CD)
this one was a band even more in trouble than the last one. IT took a different direction and ozzy was drinking way too much and it shows. The next one improves on this one alot. Still there are some good gems on this one: 'rock and roll doctor" and 'all moving parts stand still" are great songs. This one changes the style of the group to less riff driven metal hard rock band to a more straight melodic metal one. NO songs on here would influence later very hard styles of metal but there is still alot of good melodic metal on here. Just nothing that really is great in that light mostly. This one is without a doubt the least popular of the ozzy lead releases. But it's still a good one to have for fans of melodic metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars better than the last one! the end of the first era., 26 Aug 2012
This review is from: Never Say Die! (Audio CD)
this one was alot better than "technical estascy" imo. Songs like 'johnny blade' . 'over to you' are interesting hard rockers, few songs here though are that classic sabbath sound. I still like this alot though, it's a solid rocker by any standards. After this one ozzy got fired for his heavy drinking. (not drugs). There is a great dvd of a concert from this era that is available too. "never say die' is the best song on here and it foreshadows the greatness of the two dio releases that were coming up.

4.0 out of 5 stars a decent sabbath , mirrored in the cover., 26 Aug 2012
This review is from: Sabotage (Audio CD)
black sabbath made five classic discs in a row imo. Then this one which was less inspired and obviously was a band starting to burn out. Too much partying can lay low any band and this was the case here. THis still has half of the classic heavy sound here. Followed by some decent songs. I do enjoy the next two sabbath did but this one was more in line of what fans expected than those were. I disagree with the other reviewer that volume four or sabbath bloody sabbath were showing cracks, they were great , this one is showing cracks. Even the cover shows them looking very tired. It's still a good sabbath release though Just not great. 'hole in the sky' and 'symtom of the universe' are stone cold classics. And this type of stuff helped create thrash type riffs of 8 years later.

Descendents [DVD]

3.0 out of 5 stars very limited budget movie, 26 Aug 2012
This review is from: Descendents [DVD] (DVD)
It's easy to rate this a two or one star affair. Lets be honest most very low budget horror movies are one or two star at most compared to most other flicks. But if you love horror movies and low budget ones shouldn't they have their own rating system? It's only fair. So on a VERY low budget this one does some impressive work. The lead actress is a little girl and she's quite good and should have a future in film. Hopefully without getting involved in dope etc later on. She carries the flick as she wanders around , the cgi is very impressive in this flick. It's amazing what can be done these days even with a very small budget. The cities look very realistic and ruined. The helicopters look real too at least until the end shot. The film however did grate on me with it's constant flash back to the little girl and her mother escaping a research station. Frankly it's better just to do ONE flashback. Few films can get away with one than one flashback of the same past event. It's distracting and it doesn't work. the story is limited but engaging as the little girl and other kids try to stay alive. In this one , the infected don't hunt them it's soldiers who do. The ending is well strange and surreal and sorta blows the whole movie but until then it was ok. This is really a two star flick on a normal scale but this tried to be different and it's ok. The infected utilize very limited makeup because they aren't zombies really because they are still alive. SO if you enjoy a VERY low budget horror film that is a little different then you might enjoy this. Or you may not, if you are not a fan of low budget horror then this aint for you. This was shot in chile and they speak english in this movie because english is the worlds language, the film though doesn't take place in chile , it's taking place in a unnamed place. There is a documentary extra which shows how even with little money you can make digital images appear filmlike in postproduction. when even this low of budget can do that , then you can see why film will start vanishing probably.

5.0 out of 5 stars another quality show from the beeb, 26 Aug 2012
We American's love british detective shows. In fact we often get them on dvd and the show's home country may not even have them yet!!! This one is a solid show and it comes from a series of novels. This series is only two episodes long, each a mini movie. The last series was 4 episodes. The next series which is available now is only 2 as well. But the fifth series which is being shown in 2012 is again 4 eps. That's the bbc thing, small series of even successful shows. this show takes you back to the midsixties in northern england. It was a time of change and a time of chain smoking. SO everyone was poisoned by second hand smoke whereever they went. But this is a crime show about a detective and his sergeant who are out to solve murders. The country was much less tolerant than today , which is the same for other countries especially the u.s. of the period , in many regards and this is a time travel trip back to a long vanished era. The 1960's. The cases are realistic and the show has that drama edge you'd expect. It's not a action show but a detective show and I watch any british detective show I can. THis is a good one acting wise and the stories are fine too. This one features the actor who played the sidekick detective in 'midsommer murders' too, he playes a different type of character totally. LIke many brit shows; you don't get alot of eps but you get quality in period reconstruction and acting.
