4.0 out of 5 stars FarCry 2, 27 Oct 2008
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Far Cry 2 (PS3) (Video Game)
A lot of the reviews already published have been after only a few hours of playing the game. I managed to get hold of the promo copy so have been playing for around 15 hours and my opinions have changed since i first tried the game.

I've got to admit, i didn't really like GTA:IV and i'm really not into 'sand-box' type games such as mercenaries and saints row but thought i'd try this for a number of reasons. The graphics looked amazing, it seemed much more 'gritty' than similar titles and it's from Ubisoft, in my opinion, the best video game publisher around.

As expected, my main issue is with the GTA style of having to retrace your steps and drive for miles between action. The publishers tried to address this with hostile guard posts dotted all over the map, but having to kill 5/6 enemies en-route to your objective just gets plain annoying. A 50km map is impressive and yes, it looks gorgeous, but video games can get too big!

Like i mentioned before, the graphics are stunning and are a real selling point. Hook this up to a high def tv and you see much better graphics on any next gen console.

A welcome addition is the attention to detail. Your jeep will take damage and eventually need repairs, so out you hop, lift the bonnet and fix it. Ok its solved with a simple ratchet every time, but ive never seen it before. In the same way, guns you find will often jam and occasionally break.

The story itself isn't as bad as some mainstream reviews have suggested. Without spoiling anything, you start off in africa, on your own. Your mission is to take out notorious arms dealer, the jackal. You meet a small band of friends who will help you to take down enemy factions as you gain intel to lead you to your objective.

Havnt touched the multiplayer yet i'm afraid, but that speaks volumes for the game. I havn't once in 15 hours of gameplay been tempted to try the multiplayer mode.

Although it can get repetitive and at time tedious, it keeps you playing. Not quite a game of the year contender but well worth a look... 4/5

4.0 out of 5 stars Forget the 2K series!, 9 Oct 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: NBA LIVE 09 (PS3) (Video Game)
Got this game earlier today and have played it for approx 2 hours. The last few years have seen a bit of a slide in the 'fun' of basketball games but Live 09 marks a bit of a revival. There are plenty of credible competetors, (NBA 2K9, NBA 09) but after having tried demo's of the other developers take on the NBA franchise, i must recommend this game over the others.

Presentation is amazing, and it's very easy to pick up. The NBA academy also allows you to hone your skills before turning the difficulty up. Franchise mode offers much more depth and the NBA 365 seems to be a great feature (yet to use it) updating rosters and players stats day by day, so if a rookie emerges over the next few months, his stats in the game will reflect this. You're game should be up to date right until Live 2010!

Only one flaw, there is no Be a Pro career mode like NHL 09 offers. It would have been a great addition and added a touch more depth but hey, maybe next year.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...for the apprehensive, 9 Oct 2008
As the above states, this is a quick review for anyone a touch apprehensive about ordering this product. I was in exactly the same boat but its one of the best descisions i've made recently. Ok i have upgraded from a 720p 19" LCD, so any 32" TV is going to outshine it but the quality is fantastic. The picture when running a 1080i signal through it is perfect, very sharp! Havn't got a bad word about it, great solid build quality and ample ports to get everything hooked up.

The price is amazing, very good value, Sony currently sell this for £549. A similarly priced TV on the highstreet at this size won't offer anything above 720p and a much poorer contrast ratio.

Great call on the price drop amazon, and i can't urge potential buyers enough, get this ordered, now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mario Kart Wii, 12 April 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I've only played this game for 4/5 hours on the day of release but havn't got a bad thing to say about it!

Ok, so the main change is the 'WiiWheel' something that myself and other long time mario kart players that i've talked to weren't convinced would work, how wrong were we! No need for you classic/gamecube controller... the wheel is perfect. The sensitivity is spot on and gives you perfect control over your kart... or even bike!

Yeah, point 2, new stuff. Having played all the console version of mario kart for hours/days it's good to see old retro tracks crammed in along with plenty of new. The bikes are a welcome addition, theres no obvious advantage in racing a kart against a bike or vice versa so some races have a mix. The new tracks are great, one or two seem a bit familiar and occasionally some seem a bit 'daft' the tree level for example! The classic trcks have been re-mastered, and the DS ones specifically, look amazing! As for the characters, i havn't unlocked them all yet but there are plenty of new inclusions.

Managed to get 10-15 races done online, very easy to get online and jump straight into a race with players from all over the world. No lag problems to report, was just like a standard race in terms of frame rate etc. Will definately play online again.

Lately i've been playing No More Heroes and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (360). They have 2 things in common, both are fantastic games, neither will see the light of day now mario kart and the wii are winning the battle for my scart port!

1 Game is rarely a good enough reason to buy a console, but the Wii and Mario Kart will have you going for ages,

Adidas ADP1064 Plastic Gents Rubber Strap Performance Watch

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the price, 14 Nov 2007
What a bargain! Almost £100 worth of watch for just under £30. Exactly what i needed; 'sporty' enough to fit in with my lifestyle yet sophisticated enough to be worn casually in a restaurant/bar.

Would make a great present in the run up to xmas, without breaking the bank. Comes highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, everything jackass in one box set!, 14 Nov 2007
Only a few days before writing i was just about to buy Jackass the movie (1+2) and it would have set me back over £10. They were ready in my basket to be shipped, but i saw this box set advertised. Yes £23 is a lot for a dvd but look at what your getting, 3 series, 2 feature length films and a bonus disc.

I've always watched jackass but never bothered to go out and buy a dvd when they were priced at around a tenner each but these are here now and i've never laughed as much! The second film is absolutely hillarious! Highly recommended.

All we need now is a viva la bam box set!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value, 22 Sep 2007
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
The wii play game itself is very stale and isn't a patch on wiisports! but i still bought it, at £35 you cant go wrong. The wii remote would set you back £30 so £5 for a party game, no problems there.

As i said the game is rather boring, get a few mates over and it does imporve slightly. If your looking for a wii remote, get this! If your looking for a enjoyable yet simple motion sensing game, stick with wii sports.

The 5 stars are purely for the value this deal represents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nintendo Wii, the best thing since the 64!, 22 Sep 2007
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I'm by no means a 'hardcore' gamer but have played games on and off all my life, and aside from the ps3 have had most consoles. Currently i have the xbox360 and nintendo wii fighting for my AV channel. The Wii is winning.

Don't get me wrong i'm not knocking the 360 in any way, but the wii is exactly what the gaming industry needed. Only played wii sports, paper mario, zelda and red steel but all have had me hooked.

The graphics aren't that bad, people are comparing them to the HD capabilities of the other current gen consoles and wrongly so, the wii - £180 the ps3 - £400, if you want graphics, you'll pay for them. The key to the wii is its simplicity in innovation. The controller works fantastic, and the games are made to last!

The average 360 game such as gears of war/ghost recon took me around 8-10 hours to complete and i'm sure this is the same with ps3 games i.e. resistance. Wii titles such as Zelda, will take you no less than 35 hours to play through! This console will keep you entertained with only a few games and represents fantastic value.

The 'free' wii sports game is great, the whole family have played tennis, something that would never happen with a 360/ps3 game.

Maybe i've compared the 3 consoles a little too much for some readers but i've compared them on the attributes that matter, games consoles aren't there for graphics, they're there for gameplay! something that Nintendo get's right... the Wii is no exception!

Treat yourself

4.0 out of 5 stars Zelda; Twilight Princess, 22 Sep 2007
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
Ok, so it was obvious form the start that this would be compared to Ocarina of Time, one of the best games i've played. If it wasn't for ocarina of time, we wouldn't have twilight princess, and thats the problem. They feel too similar. The Windwaker was nothing speical with it's new cell shaded graphics but it did offer something new, that was the key. I'm not going to knock the graphics as they are great, it has the same old zelda feel and sound to it.

So if it aint broke, don't fix it? Very true, why change a winning formula? I just expected something new, i've only been playing 4 hours now and am in the Goron's mine. De-ja-vu? first a forest level, then a fire one? I'd certainly wager a fiver that i'm about to bump into zora's in lake hylia? Am i wrong?

I really want to give this 5 stars, it has me hooked like every other zelda game has but it relies too heavily on the previous zelda's. I have no idea how ninty can polish the zelda franchise for the next installment... maybe i'm being picky but if you havn't played a 3-D Zelda game yet, save yourself £30+ and download Ocarina of Time on the virtual console.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not much 'new' about it., 7 Jun 2007
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Ok, don't get me wrong, this is a fantastic game, takes you back to the good old days, staying up all night on the NES. The side scrolling format feels very familiar.

So whats new? Well very little. This is why i didn't give it all 5 stars. The 3D graphics look gorgeous, but apart from that and the odd new powerup its the same basic idea as the old classics. Once you finish the game, replayability is none existant.

Well worth a try, solid gameplay with top graphics, just don't expect anything groundbreaking.
