4.0 out of 5 stars Happy with this player, 20 Dec 2013
I've given up trying to get DVDs to play on a tablet either by streaming from a PC or by plugging in a portable drive with an AV mode. This isn't a bad compromise -- the screen is very low resolution compared to a tablet but is okay for the source material, sound is clear and it's easy to make region free (see other reviews here; it's basically opening the tray and typing 9653 to get to a service mode before selecting what you want.) Putting some black tape on the front sorts out the bright green power LED, and the remote has gone back in the box after applying the multi region hack. Should be ideal for sticking on box sets and film commentaries whilst working.

1.0 out of 5 stars Careful, Amazon are being misleading, 23 Dec 2012
This is the top search result for 'top ten forty niners' and Amazon only note in passing (below the page fold and the 'Add to Basket' link) that it's a French edition. It's a shortcoming of their categorisation and search functions -- it'd make more sense if there was a separate search for non-English editions, and if the search indexing could cope better with number-to-letter translations. As things stand, searching for 'top ten 49ers' gives separate listings, but that isn't the title as printed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seems alright, 16 May 2012
The unit I received has a blue LED, which suggests some batch variations and it's probably pot luck what chips are in these. Reformatted to exFAT, benchmarked read speed at up to 29.5Mb/sec and averaged a bit over half that when writing some large files -- about a gigabyte a minute. The cap will be easily lost but the metal body means it doesn't feel particularly cheap, so not too bad for (at the time of purchase) 24.

MP Auditing & Assurance Service w/ ACL cd

2.0 out of 5 stars Not actually very international, 10 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whilst marked "for use outside the US" the biases of the material (and references to legislation) are very much American. McGraw-Hill haven't demonstrated any effort with the included disc -- a CD-R with an educational demo version of ACL 9.0 from 2006, which doesn't reflect well on the publisher or producers. Seeing 2013 in print as a copyright date and in many of the examples contributes to a feel of the edition being rushed out after some quick search-and-replace actions on the text.

Still, provided you shop around, it's some cheap case studies and quite readable to dip into.

The fan is a bit annoying and only really necessary if you decide to fit a hard drive, but it's easy enough to open up and modify. Good use of a top metal panel to distribute heat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Censored?, 19 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Suicide Club [DVD] (DVD)
This region 2 UK release from Cornerstone Media is currently listed by Amazon as running for 90 minutes. The unrated "red stripe" region 1 release listed as being from Tla is 99 minutes. That suggests there's going to be quite a lot missing when the Cornerstone release arrives in autumn 2011, and if it bothers you then make sure you check before ordering. Interesting film with some surprisingly fun music, by the way...

3.0 out of 5 stars Do you remember the Ladybird Transformers books?, 19 Sep 2010
As a parody of storybooks published in the 1980s, this series is quite fun. It's got painted-style art, the character designs look appropriately blocky and inspired by toys of the era, and the characters behave as stupidly as necessary in service of the plot (which is that the Autobots wear big comedy badges through which a nasty, two-faced human general can spy on and control them.)

Kids and readers who take it for what it is will probably enjoy it as much as a big bowl of Energon soup.

3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth retail price, 11 Aug 2010
Unless you want to keep an elastic band around it or put it inside another case to stop other things in your pocket/bag sliding in to scratch the screen, this doesn't offer as much protection as the lightly-padded slipcase that comes with the reader. Its only advantage is that the reader clips into it and thus provides a better grip than bare metal. However, be aware that the clip is plastic rather than metal, so with much abuse it's going to snap straight off. Also, the cover being rigid, you might find it digs into your fingers when held in some positions.

Blackstaff Tower (Greenwood Presents Waterdeep) (Forgotten Realms)
Blackstaff Tower (Greenwood Presents Waterdeep) (Forgotten Realms)
by Steven E. Schend
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent enough entry, limited by publisher decisions, 11 Jan 2009
Schend tries hard to keep one of the most well-known cities in the Realms an interesting place, figuring out ways to reference or bring in previous characters and provide information on the shift in timeline to a century ahead of the main body of novels. Readers who've picked up his first Realms book, Blackstaff, will also find some nods back to characters met there.

Unfortunately there isn't really enough here to connect to, following the ending of the existing campaign setting and product line by Wizards of the Coast; it's very difficult to care about a fairly generic new cast introduced as a block. As an information dump it works, but there's nothing to get excited about -- maybe if this cast are used as principal characters in further novels they might engender more affection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Build quality has declined, 23 April 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've bought PNY attaché flash drives before, and this one feels very flimsy and imprecisely moulded by comparison. It doesn't match the picture on the packaging or the one that Amazon have -- the activity LED has been moved forward so that it's next to the brand writing. I'd assume it was a fake if I'd bought it on eBay, and can only assume PNY have been making cutbacks since the original production run. The only plus side is a bigger lanyard hole than their earlier shells, which is large enough to attach to a keyring... though the plastic probably wouldn't last long with that treatment.

Benchmarks at 17.2Mb/second with HDTune, which is acceptable at the price.
