After a very busy and exciting summer which seems to have lasted to now! I have finally found time to take a good look and read Jean Haines' latest book 'World of Watercolour' and what a delight! Jean never fails to please, her sumptuous use of colour and ingenious use of water and pigment delight the reader and offer fresh ways to approach painting with this exciting medium. The fact that Jean is so generous with her knowledge making it quite clear that she wants to share the joy and thrill she enjoys with others - thank you Jean!
I love the way Jean reminds the reader to take risks with colour and subject; as a practising artist Jean is my 'go to' artist for inspiration with regard to colours when painting animals, she always has a surprise up her sleeve - her use of pink in her mouse (chapter entitled 'Starting Small') shows how she is a master of her medium with thorough knowledge of colours and how the work to create glowing and gorgeous paintings. I is a pleasure to be able to use Jean's book as a reference and reminder on how to start 'small', it is so easy to find yourself bogged down with detail when, as Jean shows us, less is definitely more. In addition, Jean's step-by-step gives you an insight into her practice - what a thrill for any artist! Both exciting and informative.
Even as an fellow watercolour artist I find Jean's approach to conveying her techniques helpful and beneficial, you are able to glean a good understanding of how she has tackled a subject, with clear and concise instructions you can have a go, if you wish, to replicate Jean's style. Although, I would advise keeping your integrity intact and take pearls of wisdom from this beautifully written and illustrated book but remember to develop your own style, of course with masses of guidance from Jean.
I also love that Jean shows how absolutely any subject can be appealing and electrifying from small mice to a bunch of grapes, literally any subject can become a sensational painting!
Jean has created another informative, beautifully illustrated and inspirational book, well done Jean and thank you.
