I love this movie! I was 16 back in '82 so I can really relate to the Gary character. He's your all around nice guy who sadly doesn't get the girl in the end. I like how the film starts off as your typical 80's teen comedy about sex and parties but then takes a more serious tone in the third act dealing with an unwanted pregnancy and betrayal.

The best part of the movie is actually the soundtrack. For those of us who were around back then the music was indeed for the most part amazing. From The Police, The Cars, REO Speedwagon, Journey, etc.. and probably the best track used in the film is "Oh No" by The Commodores. It's a beautiful song that fits perfectly in certain scenes and always leaves a lump in my throat. :(

What can you say about the ending other than it's heartbreaking and brutally honest. That look on Gary's face says it all. Most guys at some point in high school were in that same situation where they were totally smitten by a certain girl but she was oblivious to your feelings or simply attracted to another guy. That's what makes the last scene so powerful and memorable. Real life is not a feel good Hollywood storybook ending.

The Arrow release (Region B only) is another winner for them. The transfer looks terrific with it's natural film grain in tact. Those tight close ups of Diane Franklin's beautiful face were made for blu-ray. The audio comes in loud and clear and the music as mentioned sounds great in surround sound. I also enjoyed the extras with new interviews from Gary & Karen and the writer/director Boaz Davidson

Highly Recommended for a wonderful early 80's time capsule!!!

Great early 60's horror classic with a wonderful and deliciously evil performance by a young Oliver Reed. The Black and White transer looks excellent!

5.0 out of 5 stars "DO YOU HAVE ANY DRUGS IN YOUR STOMACH?", 3 Feb 2010

Great film about Columbian drug mules with a breakout performance by Catalina Moreno. The film is intense, tragic and thaught provoking all at the same. The director does a terrific job of humanizing the characters and showing their hoplessness and despair. Definitely one of the best independant films I've seen in recent years.

I imported the Blu from the UK which looks and sounds great since it's not available in North American for some strange reason. There's also a very good and insightful commentary from the writer/director

Highly Recommended!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "I LIKE TO STARVE MYSELF. IT KEEPS THE FEAR UP", 9 Jan 2010

The 70's were without a doubt the best decade for American movies and The Deer Hunter is certainly one of them. The story is so well layed out and told. The performances are wonderful especially from DeNiro and Walkman and Cimino does a beautiful job directing this complex story. Unlike today's movies which feel the need to use fancy camera gimmicks and quick MTV cuts this film has non of that crap. The wedding sequence is a perfect example. It's long and subtle but very important in the development of the characters for the rest of the film, and of course the sing-a-long to "Can't Take My Eyes Of You" is one of my favorite scenes of all times! It's a classic and never gets old.

The Studio Canal Blu-Ray looks wonderful for a 70's film and the Cimino interview and commentary are a great bonus!! The guy is a great anecdotal storyteller. This Blu is Region-Free and played perfectly in my Sony-BDPS550. The Deer Hunter remains a cinematic masterpiece and a must own for any serious film lover.

4.0 out of 5 stars "WHO'S IDEA WAS IT TO COME TO BRAZIL??", 8 Dec 2009

This review is from: Paradise Lost [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Good low budget horror film set in the jungles of Brazil about a corrupt doctor who kidnaps tourists and mutilates them for their organs. I live in Canada but imported from the UK since it's not available in North America.

The transfer is a bit grainy but the dst-hd track is pretty good.

Considering I paid like $15 canadian no complaints!

Recommened if you like films like Martyrs, Eden Lake & Switchblade Romance

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film!!, 27 Sep 2009

I live in Canada but ordered from the UK since I have a region free player. This was a blind buy for me but what a fascinating movie to watch. The story is really compelling, gritty and intense. It gives you great insight in some parts of Brazil that most people don't see which is run by drug dealers and criminals. The hand held camera work is also outstanding. It feels more like a documentary than an actual movie. You would never a see a film like this made about essentialy a vigilante police force in North America. The Blu also looks and sounds great!!

Highly Recommended!!!
