2.0 out of 5 stars A lovely watch, 24 Feb 2014

If only I didn't have to return to watch after two months of use. Which accounts for my rating. Otherwise, it would be five star. The watch began to perform erratically – unaccountably stopping.

The item has a solid feel to it and the dial is crystal clear. It is a very beautiful piece. I desperately hope its replacement proves to endure, for then it will be the cherishable item it is.

The singing of Barbara Hendrix on this disc is exquisite. Both in the Berlioz and in the Britten, she emerges as an artist of engaging sensibilities. Only in the song "Being beauteous" does she fall short of the rapturous ecstasy Briten's score suggests, but that is a fault compounded by the somewhat literal conducting of Colin Davis at this point. Don't let this put you off, however, because this is a very special disc indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Strauss, 18 Aug 2012

These performances of major Strauss tone poems will not disappoint. The orchestral sound is bold, the thrust is electric and these accounts are acquiring vintage status. If you can get your hands on a copy, you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Mehta, 18 Aug 2012

Rather like Solti, it is often been fashionable to be rather dismissive about to his conducting. Throughout his career, Mehta has been an inspirational and consummate conductor. So much of his recorded legacy is worth investigating. Here we find him as a first rate Straussian. I highly recommend this issue. Excellent pacing, visceral excitement and clarity of orchestration are all on offer here in the two big works he conducts. However, if blandness which is the preferred option now of many modern conductor is your choice of approach, look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top-notch music making being given away for pennies, 26 July 2011

These famous performances caught Fisher-Dieskau at the height of his powers. His dramatic voice combines both beauty of utterance as well as excitement when called for. And there is far less evidence here of a hectoring quality that could inform some of his singing later on in his distinguished career. The combination of one of the twentieth century's most beautiful voices, hand in hand with the interpretative insights of a rare sensibility, makes this very special indeed. I would have parted with the money for the Ruckertlieder alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvel of a recital, 26 July 2011

Aficionados of Peter Pears should snap up this wonderful example of his art. Most of these songs had been released on an old Decca Eclipse LP when I first came across them, and for years I have keenly been awaiting their release on CD. I have not been disappointed. Pears was famed for his intense singing of the Elizabethan masters and here we have one gem after another.

But it is when he is accompanied by Britten (whose pianism is quite staggering) that miracles happen. Butterworth's "Is my team ploughing?" can hardly have been bettered. Words fail me when it comes to the rendition of the two Bridge songs.....

After five goes, I gave up with this product. Able-bodied friends came round and all had a tremendous giggle attempting to use this useless device. How others have managed to be pleased with it will remain one of the great mysteries of the universe for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Stravinsky, 16 Aug 2010

The main reason for acquiring this set is the electrifying performance of Oedipus Rex with the much lamented Antony Rolfe Johnson in the title role. The combination of his heroic tone with his honeyed sweetness readily commends itself. With a sonically gripping recording, this granite tale from the echoes of time emerges with awesome power under the baton of Maestro Welser-Most, a conductor who was mercilessly hounded by the critics when he arrived in the UK. Clearly, our loss.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth investigating., 16 Aug 2010

Naxos has yet again served us well with this issue. Bliss, like so many passed over English composers, had a distinctive voice which deserves to be heard. These are two finely wrought scores and the detail emerges clearly from this well-balanced recording.
