4.0 out of 5 stars Larger than life....NOT!!, 18 Dec. 2009

This is the second of two statuettes released of Freddie Mercury with limited pose-ability. Its a shame they did not bring this out in an 18" version like the Magic Tour Freddie. It does come with champagne glass and mic reminiscent of the tour of the time - however he must be a slightly plastered Freddie as he doesn't balance so well on his little pedestal. Too much to drink dears! Fans and collectors only.

4.0 out of 5 stars A book of THREE halves, 18 Dec. 2009
I'll be brief. Overall I loved this book but there is way too much exposition at the start and end of the book.

Its a 100 pages too long but a gripping yarn all the same.

Also, even though the "Girl" in the title may be the focus of the plot it the secondary male character that we piggyback for the 3 books in the main..odd!!

1.0 out of 5 stars The firework that failed to spark, 18 Dec. 2009
Like the first two books this takes some time before it takes off, but unfortunately in this instance it takes off way too late and then fizzles out way too fast, like a cheap firework that promises so much but then fails to deliver.

Our heroine spends most of the book confined to a hospital bed, and for all the villains involved in her predicament only two get a decent comeuppance in a rewarding fashion. A real slog of a book and such a disappointment after the first two gems.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Queen for Dummies", 4 Oct. 2009
This review is from: Absolute Greatest (Audio CD)
If this was a book it would be called "Queen for Dummies", the cover would be bright yellow and it would introduce young kids and creatures from another planet to the music of Queen.

Their first Greatest Hits package sold in bucket loads since 1981 and in the same way that Bohemian Rhapsody broke the mold for video promos, it set the standard for Greatest Hits packages. There were no fillers, new songs or dud hits ... in fact they had to leave off single releases in order that it fit the LP Album format.

Now almost 30 years later, this release tries to encapsulate Queen inside the constraints of a single CD. Its a flawed and impossible task. Do you select songs that are familiar to a worldwide audience, do you select songs that charted best in a particular territory, do you pick concert rock classics or 3 minute radio friendly pop songs?

The problem is this - this is clearly aimed at "The Christmas Market" - people who maybe like Queen but don't love them. They normally wouldn't buy their albums but know a bit about them and have probably seen some of their stuff covered on X-Factor, Brittan's Got Talent or maybe on the soundtrack to an animated cartoon or feature film. However, the one set of people who will DEFINITELY buy this album will be their massive fan base (of who I am just one) who will buy it for completest reasons.

The latter of these groups are not going to be a happy bunch, even with the limited edition version with the book or the heavy vinyl edition. They want a big glossy rarities package of a similar nature to that released for Freddie Mercury in the 90's. They have all the commercial releases, they want the B-sides,the 12" inch mixes that were only available on vinyl, the unreleased videos incl. solo work, and if possible anything that Brian, Roger, John or Freddie sang in the bath (70's) or shower (80's) or on their way to the bank to lodge their royalties cheques.

I could burn this album onto a CD from my Queen collection........ but I will buy it. I might even buy it for my nephews and nieces to ensure the Queen legacy gets passed down the generations, who will tell me that I'm a mug and did I know that I could have downloaded it off the internet for nothing.

In conclusion 5 stars for content (despite the gems that have been excluded)but 0 stars for whoever felt the need to make this release happen. (I am guessing its the same Muppet that is re-issuing the vinyl back catalog and the CD singles in recession friendly chucks but who is too lazy to get their arse into the archives). Its time the band give their fans what they want, not "what they've been given a 1000 times before"

3.0 out of 5 stars A jigsaw with pieces missing, 11 July 2009
When you buy a jigsaw and a piece is missing its disappointing, when that piece is a central part of the picture it makes the jigsaw worthless. Here you have 350,000+ crowd at a Queen/Paul Rogers gig and whats the first thing that goes through your head..."I can't wait to see 700,000 hands clapping to Radio GaGa". Well, you're going to be disappointed so - they did play it but its not on this DVD. Perhaps there was insufficient space on the DVD or maybe its because Paul fumbles his lines a bit, or perhaps its because the audience participation on the track is a little less than total. (I have seen the full show on bit torrent) Whatever the reason, its not good enough, the full show should have been released warts and all, the fans deserve better. A Kind of Magic is also missing.

The 2CD + DVD set is good value for money however (as long as you didn't buy it through the band's website). The metal tin / one size fits all t-shirt box version is contemptible but this 3 disc version is NICE to have...would have preferred plastic box than cardboard packaging but all in all - not bad.

Time to release archive goodies please guys.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stop that train!!, 7 Nov. 2008
This review is from: Black Ice (Audio CD)
The album opener is a cracker, the next few songs pretty good and then the songs just blend one into another and instantly forgettable and the train of songs run off the tracks into obscurity. I have listened to the album only 3 times through start to finish so far so maybe I am being a little harsh. The guys believe that an album should not be broken up and sold as seperate tracks and that the running order and whole album feel is important so in this respect, taking the album as a whole its somewhat dissappointing. It is overly long but then maybe we shouldn't complain, after all you can't get too much of a good thing but the guys would have been better served by releasing two 9 track albums 4 years apart which would keep the band quids in and the fans ticking over with some good material. I am sure some of the new songs will tour well on their worldwide tour its only a pity they are not playing more stadium venues over arenas so that a few more can get the rare chance to see them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mind over matter, 28 Oct. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This little item may not be any better than putting a bit of ice inside a tea towel to reduce the swelling of a bruise (thats what we had as kids!!) but the character takes the childs mind off the fall in the same way as when you "kiss it better". Thought it was an expensive item but a year on its still working its magic. Pity there are not more characters available in the range.

Lovely floor puzzle, but the cardboard pieces tend to bend upwards and therefore don't sit together very well after a short while. Pity.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time - life is too short, 28 Oct. 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
The single player version of this game does not bear mentioning - its awful. The online version takes an awful long time to get into. You only unlock weapons as you imrove your rank over time. In the mean time you are getting killed for sport by those with superior weapons. If your idea of fun is sitting waiting to re-spawn time after time and running around trying to keep up with your squad and getting killed from God knows where then this is the game for you. If you don't like the game you can't even pass it on to a friend as you have to register your name to the game before you play rendering it un-saleable. Glad I didn't pay more than 20 euro for it. (Play Command and Conquer Renegade online instead much more fun!)
