New York City Transit Buses: 1945-1975 Photo Archive (Photo Archives)
New York City Transit Buses: 1945-1975 Photo Archive (Photo Archives)
by Guy E Martin
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of detail, 28 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Quite a meaty book even in this photo-album format. Introductory text about each of the main operators in this period. Captions are quite detailed although as with many bus books there is an implied level of background understanding.
No route or even area maps!

Shock Of The Old: Technology and Global History since 1900

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 16 Dec. 2014

I was disappointed. I grasped the point in the author's book about Britain's WW2 war machine straight away but as I read through this, I could not see a big outcome. True, he repeatedly makes the highly important point about reliance on old technologies rather than just the new stuff but...so what? Don't we know that? My bicycle is old-technology, my I-Pad newer. Once he has made the point that society uses both old and new stuff, where do I go from there as his sympathetic reader? I found the numerous examples quoted to become a bit boring in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the subject, 16 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Unusual to find a Haynes manual subject where the author is at the very heart of the subject matter. Too often I find these Haynes manuals are written by subject matter experts but they know so much, it's hard to follow the most important bits of the story. The WW1 Mk IV tank manual and the DH Mosquito book are both a bit like that. The former made hard work of explaining the origins of the tank, the latter dwells on detail of precision-aligning the wings under construction.

This book has the ship's designer as the author and he takes the reader through the whole subject from start to finish and you can sense he has written it for a wider audience. It's great to read how his childhood influences have in turn influenced him as an adult. I have read reviews criticising this book for a lack of detail but since the reader is not actually ever going to maintain this beautiful vessel using this Haynes publication, so what? It could have had bigger and better plans maybe but those that are included are highly relevant and authentic. Definitely one of the better Haynes manuals.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, captions too brief., 16 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
With one picture reproduced on each page and a simple caption below it, this book does not set any high standards for layout or design. It is ultra-conventional. The captions themselves are mostly very brief and beg a number of questions. Some are downright bland.

Definitely not a book to buy to expect a full photo archive treatment of the subject in my opinion. True, the subject is vast but deserves say another 50 per cent more words to explain things, particularly by inserting some more dates! How long were coaches in service for, that would be a good start.

As one example, the unofficial use of the RAF 'roundel' (blue, white red concentric circles used as GB national aircraft markings) behind the Greyhound dog's head on coaches from 1940 is mentioned in several captions only as a 'bulls eye.' There was a bit more to it than that (see Corgi's particular model of this RAF version model of the Yellow 743 coach for the answer).

Could have been better.

Samuel Ledgard (Prestige Series)
Samuel Ledgard (Prestige Series)
by Mike Lockyer
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.50

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighterweight pictorial review of Ledgard fleet., 12 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It doesn't set any standards for design appeal and the more interesting and scenic shots are often reproduced in similar format to the duller record shots of various buses. There is also a newer and an older history of the life and work of Samuel Ledgard: this is a reminiscence or picture album but pleasant enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Remember its a 1940s document not contemporary graphics., 28 Sept. 2014

Nice to have but 1940s standards of design and reproduction may disappoint some buyers I guess. Don't necessarily rely on it for accurate battlefield navigation as such.

My third purchase of of one of these lights. The solar panel is big enough to ensure they work for 8 hours in the summer, maybe three in the depths of winter. Robust.

Tales of a Cruise Ship
Tales of a Cruise Ship
by Margaret Marsh
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Readable and candid account, 28 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Tales of a Cruise Ship (Paperback)
A very readable and honest account of a new-to-cruising lady, wife of a hurriedly-appointed ship's doctor with one of Fred.Olsen's four cruise ships. Having sailed and enjoyed a Fred.Olsen cruise the account meant more to me probably than non-Fred. cruisers. Nevertheless, the book presents a 'side' of cruising not often written about I suppose.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that detailed, useful for re-enactors?, 14 Sept. 2014
A not bad attempt at a single volume covering a lot of topics but treatment of the various topics such as trench feeding is very superficial and much better covered elsewhere. Try, 'Mud, blood and poppycock,' etc

Probably most useful for re-enactors wanting to get webbing just right?

'Tommy Uniform and Kit Manual,' might have been a better title...
