Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Illustrated)
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Illustrated)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, moody, Rackham illustrations, 27 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are many copies of 'Alice' available to download for Kindle, including a free one as the work is out of copyright. Many people have illustrated the book with both colour and line illustrations and using the 'click to look inside' feature on Amazon you can pick and choose between the many versions. This version has Arthur Rackham's wonderful illustrations, subdued, moody, even a bit scary, but a marvellous addition to Lewis Caroll's ageless text. Importantly this version has both the dozen or so colour plates but also the line illustrations that Rackham did which seem not to be included in some other versions available. It is a competitively priced ebook, easily navigable to individual chapters and also to each colour plate.

Complete Works 15 Books { Actively table of contents }
Complete Works 15 Books { Actively table of contents }

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly misdescribed item, 10 Jun. 2012
This is nowhere near a "Complete Works." It's just a small selection of Virginia Woolf's short stories. It isn't 15 books, but 15 short stories. Shouldn't Amazon monitor these things more closely?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good collection of a wonderfully varied poet, 4 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
What strikes you as you read Browning's poems is the sheer variety of his output. There are children's poems such as 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', beautiful lyrics such as 'Home Thoughts from Abroad' (Oh, to be in England/ Now that April's there) and his great dramatic monologues just to select a few groups. There must be something for everyone who reads poetry. I was delighted to find the relatively unknown 'By the Fireside' (I shall be found by the fire,suppose,/ O'er a great wise book as beseemeth age,/ While the shutters flap as the cross wind blows,/ And I turn the page, and I turn the page,/ Not verse now, only prose!) The extensive selection is navigable to individual poems from the list of contents.
Browning could be complex sometimes and his poetry has a distinctive European feel to it so it is maybe fitting that this ebook collection seems to have been put together by an Italian publisher. I'm sure that would have pleased the great man.

Poetical Works of Matthew Arnold

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, straightforward collection of an eminent Victorian, 4 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
High Victorian poetry is maybe a bit unfashionable now and Matthew Arnold was nothing if not high Victorian. But his poetry is eminently readable; well crafted, thoughtful and easy to take in. This is a good collection with all his best known works such as Dover Beach, The Scholar Gypsy and the long narrative poem Sohrab and Rustum. It also has a wealth of less familiar poems that are a pleasure to dip into. The navigation problems seem to have been sorted and it is possible to go straight to individual poems from the list of contents but you may sometimes wish to adjust font size to prevent lines over running too much. A very worthwhile 'buy' (for nothing!) for lovers of English poetry or students wanting to collect standard texts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good value; does the job., 16 Mar. 2012

This stylus pen simply does the job. It is so much more precise than using your finger to tap away at the screen of your tablet, or whatever, and it eliminates all those smeary fingerprints. There seem to be numerous stylus pens for sale but I bought this one and I'd certainly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great countryside writer well presented for Kindle, 8 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm sure everyone who did Eng Lit at school will remember Adlestrop and the blackbird singing 'and round him, mistier,/ Farther and farther, all the birds/Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.' But here is Edward Thomas's poetry complete and full of riches. Thomas was essentially a writer about the English and Welsh countryside, initially in prose but then in the last two years of his life in this outpouring of beautiful, understated poems. He observed the countryside and its characters in all weathers and all seasons. He has long been one of my favourite poets and I find I can always go to his poems and find something relevant to now in both time and feeling. I'm writing this review in late winter so how good to be able to turn to his great poem March; 'Now I know that spring will come again.'
This Kindle edition is really good. There is just the poetry, no editorial matter, but it is well formatted and easily navigable to individual poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars The essence of romantic, lyric poetry, 8 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a volume of poetry published by W.B.Yeats in 1899, when he was 34. The poems are beautifully crafted, highly romantic lyrics of his youth; 'I have spread my dreams under your feet;/Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.'
The Kindle edition is nicely formatted and navigable to individual poems.
It is strange that there are no editions of Yeats' complete poems available for ebook readers as he is out of copyright, having died in 1939. I suspect it has something to do with Project Gutenberg, the prime source of many ebook free versions, not yet having produced an etext of the complete poems.
UPDATE July 2012 Delphi Classics have now produced a lovely edition of Yeats's complete poetry and plays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good value budget-priced collection, 5 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a sound collection of Tolstoy's novels at a very reasonable price. All the novels are navigable to individual chapters and it is easy to find your way around the collection. There are a few illustrations at the beginning but, to be honest, I felt they were almost put in for the sake of being able to say there were illustrations and they did not add a great deal. There is a quite lengthy biographical introduction to the whole collection but, so far as I can see, no introductory matter for the individual works. I bought the collection to read the novel Hadji Murad which is not always included in these collections. It was an enjoyable read but there were quite a lot of misprints and typographical errors. For example many apostrophes are replaced by dashes which is a bit intrusive as you read. I looked at some text in other novels and they seemed not to have that fault.
All in all the collection provides good value but these collections of out of copyright authors are nearly all reasonably priced now so it's a case of looking around and seeing which includes what you want and is formatted to your expectations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be afraid of Virginia Woolf, 11 Jan. 2012
Right, there are easier authors to read than Virginia Woolf. I remember at school, because I thought it would be a good book to be seen reading, struggling with the first three or four pages of The Waves before putting it aside to come back to later. And even this fine compilation is unlikely to tempt me to take up that struggle again. But there is much more to be enjoyed in her prolific output. To the Lighthouse, densely textured though it is, presents a fine picture of her childhood summers spent at St Ives in Cornwall and has a sympathetic portrait of her mother. Flush and Orlando are much easier than some of the more abstruse novels. In addition you can find here the literary criticism of the two volumes of The Common Reader, the keenly observed portraits of London in her London Essays and her early feminism expressed in A Room of One's Own. If you have any interest in Virginia Woolf or in literature of the first half of the 20th century then collecting this for your Kindle is really a no brainer. A great collection, easy to find your way around and hours of enjoyment browsing in what is, even if the content is sometimes obscure, some of the most beautifully written prose of the last hundred years.
A recent update to this collection, available free to original buyers, has added A Writer's Diary, a wonderful selection from Virginia Woolf's diaries made by her husband after her death. He selected those passages dealing with literature and authors, including her comments on her own works as they were written. It is a fascinating read and includes such things as an account of her meeting with Thomas Hardy in 1926.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful illustrated edition, 11 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I already had a very good 'Complete Sherlock Holmes' that I bought soon after getting my Kindle but when I saw this illustrated edition available the idea of having all the original pictures with the Holmes stories was too much to resist. And it's worth every penny. Because the original pictures were in black and white they look good on Kindle and add that touch of atmosphere of Victorian London to the text. Some of the other illustrations included are too detailed to work well but overall this is a very successful compilation. It is well formatted, fully navigable from the contents pages and has some excellent editorial material. Of course the quality of the stories goes without saying; little wonder that more than a hundred years since they were first published Sherlock Holmes adventures are near the top of all ebook popularity charts.
