2.0 out of 5 stars Not very informative, 20 Dec 2012

Not really worth getting even if it is free. This is a very slight text and the author seems bent on giving his own opinions rather than giving any information. It tells you very little about Humboldt.

A Christmas Carol (Classic Edition With Original Illustrations)
A Christmas Carol (Classic Edition With Original Illustrations)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations, 20 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It would be a bit presumptuous to comment on Dickens's story; after all it's one of the greatest and most enduring Christmas stories ever written with Scrooge a byword for grumpy behaviour. But, being out of copyright and available as a free ebook, why pay for this version? Well it has Arthur Rackham's great illustrations in black and white and in colour to add lively animation to the story. Rackham's slightly grotesque style suits Dickens down to the ground and this version is worth every penny. As many of the illustrations are in colour they work best if you have the Kindle app on a tablet or PC or if you have a Kindle Fire. The only "Bah humbug!" comment I can make is that the active tables of contents to the chapters and illustrations don't seem to work, but it's still a lovely edition of a wonderful story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easier to apply than I expected; works well., 22 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought these with some apprehension as I know that fitting screen protectors can be a frustrating and fiddly job. But I was pleasantly surprised by how easily the protector went on. It's a good idea to make sure that you have a level, uncluttered and well lit work surface so that you can see exactly what you are doing. I bought these from Techgear and they were delivered the day after I placed the order. I'd definitely recommend both the screen protectors and the suppliers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Laura Knight's open air paintings, 17 Nov 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book was produced to accompany an exhibition of the same name that has travelled, in 2012, from Penzance to Nottingham and Worcester. But the book stands alone, quite apart from the exhibition, as an excellent introduction to the art of Laura Knight and especially the paintings that she did out of doors. It covers work she did at Staithes, in Cornwall and at Malvern and is beautifully illustrated. Although they are touched on the book does not deal with the pictures she produced of the theatre, the circus and her work at the Nuremburg Tribunal, those being out of the scope of the 'Open Air' subject matter. Well worth getting as the exhibition brought together paintings from many private and world wide public collections and the illustrations include many of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm not an audio specialist but I like them, 8 Oct 2012
With the advent of better and better sound quality in all sorts of audio devices I thought I'd try some earphones that were a step up from the standard ones usually supplied with things. So my son bought me these and I must say I do notice a difference when using them listening to digital radio and CD's. I'm not an audio freak but the sound does seem sharper and fresher, more defined. I'd say they were well worth an extra few pounds if you listen much. My only quibble (hence four not five stars) is that I found the foam earbuds supplied with the earphones were impossible to fit without tearing them beyond repair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories; very atmospheric and beautifully written, 20 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm not usually a reader of 'ghost stories' but as these were free and as M.R.James has such a high reputation I decided to see what they were like. And I was not disappointed. The stories are beautifully written in a classical, unhurried style. They skilfully build up an atmosphere of strangeness and the supernatural that draws you into the story. I've finished reading them all but I'm sure they would stand further readings and, fortunately, I see there is a second volume also freely available in the Kindle store. Highly recommended if you like well crafted short stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good and complete collection of Yeats poetry for Kindle, 25 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There have been many incomplete, often poorly formatted and difficult to navigate collections of Yeats's poetry in the Kindle store for some time. Now, at last, we have the real thing; all W.B. Yeats's poetry from his early beautiful, romantic lyricism to the magnificent and often sombre poems of his later years. The collection is well produced and it is easy to get to individual books or even to individual poems from the table of contents. For anyone who loves English (language) poetry this collection will be a 'must have'. Also included are Yeats's plays many of which he wrote for performance at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

4.0 out of 5 stars A mid-Victorian view of western Scotland, 21 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very readable account of a holiday cruise along the west coast of Scotland taken by a London journalist in the mid 1870's. As the author travelled up to Scotland by train it also includes a description of the then newly opened Settle-Carlisle railway. It is quite lightly written and contains interesting descriptions of such things as a wet Sunday in Oban, religious observance in west Scotland and the Black Houses that many rural people there still lived in. As the author doesn't attempt to hide his opinions you also get an insight into the attitudes of a mid-Victorian London journalist. Towards the end you get the feeling that the author is padding out the book with accounts of regional folk tales but all in all it's very enjoyable and, as it only runs to just over 100 pages, an ideal quick read.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Illustrated)
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (Illustrated)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, moody, Rackham illustrations, 27 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are many copies of 'Alice' available to download for Kindle, including a free one as the work is out of copyright. Many people have illustrated the book with both colour and line illustrations and using the 'click to look inside' feature on Amazon you can pick and choose between the many versions. This version has Arthur Rackham's wonderful illustrations, subdued, moody, even a bit scary, but a marvellous addition to Lewis Caroll's ageless text. Importantly this version has both the dozen or so colour plates but also the line illustrations that Rackham did which seem not to be included in some other versions available. It is a competitively priced ebook, easily navigable to individual chapters and also to each colour plate.

Complete Works 15 Books { Actively table of contents }
Complete Works 15 Books { Actively table of contents }

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly misdescribed item, 10 Jun 2012
This is nowhere near a "Complete Works." It's just a small selection of Virginia Woolf's short stories. It isn't 15 books, but 15 short stories. Shouldn't Amazon monitor these things more closely?
