4.0 out of 5 stars Splenetic hilarity, 1 Nov. 2009
This review is from: The Hell of It All (Hardcover)
Having read Brooker's first two books, I looked forward to this. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it's more of the same.

His originality with written violence is astonishing. I have no idea where the rage comes from - probably cultural inanity - only that it's very funny indeed.

This is just as quotable as "Screen Burn" and "Dawn Of The Dumb," and taken from the same newspaper columns. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A film that drips quality but has some notable flaws, 31 Oct. 2009
This review is from: Public Enemies [DVD] (2009) (DVD)
Most of this film works incredibly well. The period piece feel is completely effective, and Johnny Depp is compelling and watchable as Dillinger. I felt Christian Bale's performance was well judged, as he played a man who was a bit of a weasel but it's not how we're used to seeing Bale.

For the rest of the cast, Stephen Graham stands out. The violence and setpieces are well done, some of the best I've seen.

The flaws are in some aspects of the narrative, which flags in places, and that some confusion on minor points can arise. But overall this is good cinema and well worth seeing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating cinema rendered with expertise, 14 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Il Divo [DVD] (DVD)
This is a stately and magnificent film about Italian politics, the Mafia, corruption and the Vatican. The cinematography is intense and captivating. This is an involving film, one I will rewatch. Comparisons to Scorsese are justified.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get killing Nazis!, 22 Aug. 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This shooter is great fun and the graphics are excellent. The plot is Nazi killing with some supernatural shenanigans thrown in. There's plenty of weapons and upgrades, with some well put together setpieces.

I found the game gripping - I've completed a third of it in less than a day, and I don't play games too often, and that's because it's hard to put down. Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Daft, silly and great fun, 18 Aug. 2009
This is a sophisticated and witty period comedy of manners ... oh wait, no it's not. It is very funny, though, and watching 2 40 year olds behave like nitwits is surprisingly entertaining. Will Ferrell on good form. Great stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning film, 18 Aug. 2009
This review is from: Let the Right One in [DVD] (DVD)
This is a beautifully filmed and hypnotic horror tale. It has great performances and a truly original plot, something that is rare these days. The story is gripping and at times shocking.

All I can say is, watch it - truly outstanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Clint's best films, 18 Aug. 2009
This review is from: Gran Torino [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
I enjoyed this film a lot. Clint Eastwood does a great job as both actor and director, and the story challenges to viewer - it's not regular Clint fare, but it is both entertaining and moving. The approach to an old man winding down his life, and a young man entering manhood works fantastically. Strong stuff, well worth a view.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, detailed and fun, 25 Jun. 2009
This is a well informed and enjoyable book, with lots of great pictures and a good span of knowledge. It does in places just seem to list things together for the sake of it, but overall I recommend it as it has a lot of enthusiasm and provides plenty of enjoyable for the enthusiast.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gory, atmospheric movie, but lacks class, 24 Jun. 2009
This has some fantastic scenes in it, which work brilliantly, but overall it doesn't work as well as it could have. This is a pity, as what does work is superb, but too much lets it down.

Don't get me wrong, this is worth seeing, but could have been so much more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Gruesome and some good scares, 24 Jun. 2009
This remake hits the basic boxes for a horror film. The killings are graphic and quite inventive in some places, and the killer's approach does bring dread in the good way, so these count as a plus.

The drawbacks are that it's all a bit contrived and there are few surprises. This film has its moments and is worth seeing, although the 3D only works properly in the cinema, where it does work well.
