This lady was definitely NOT writing for the war-torn impoverished people of Britain. A most disappointing book whereby "take a large piece of rump steak" was simply not possible for many years. People did not have "rare trips abroad". This book is aimed at upper-middle class and does not live up to its reputation. In subsequent printings, all her wealthy followers could have - and should have - cooked and photographed the recipes. A case of being at the right place at the right time. She started by cooking casseroles in her own home and invited writers to participate. Clever. After years of waiting for this supposed classic, I am deeply disappointed. The reviews have obviously been a very good PR exercise which does not come up trumps. Don't buy.

Having viewed the programs on BBC, it was a definite requirement to my many cookbook/DVD/Video collections. In this series Gordon has shown a family side to his nature (do not like the nightmare or F*** programs), and has beautiful recipes which differ from my own collection of Delia, E. David etc. Recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Most disapointing cookbook ever purchased, 24 Oct. 2012

Nothing new, nothing innovative, nothing spectacular. All recipes are in anyones basic repertoire. Having also been born in New Zealand and lived in London, I expected new twists on already known recipes. Not so. Have had it one day only - will be going to SPCA charity shop.
