5.0 out of 5 stars Current and Concise, 20 Aug 2014
I suspect that the time of the analogue travel book is almost at an end. As most people will be painfully aware, the average lonely planet or rough guide tome is a heavy beast, not remotely suited to travelling light. Combined with the fact that the information contained within - phone numbers, prices and dates is liable to change, and thus be incorrect, I am sure that I am not the only person who much prefers actually travelling to a country or city with a digital guide, or access to a service like Trip Advisor on a phone or tablet. Much more portable and current.

In any case, I do enjoy being able to go through a book before leaving, even if I won’t actually carry it with me.

This Lonely Planet Austria is the most up-to-date edition (published May 2014, according to the back of my copy), and therefore the only version worth having. Don’t buy a second-hand previous edition, or you may find things have changed considerably when you arrive in person.

It is a reasonably sized (around 400 pages), with a sturdy outer binding. It contains the usual sections on general information and specific geographic areas, whilst concluding with some pages on history, culture and a ‘survival guide’. The main sections are as follows:

‘Plan Your Trip’ Section including:
Maps
Top Places to Visit
Itineraries
Outdoors
Food/Drink

Regions:
Vienna
Lower Austria & Burgenland
Upper Austria
Styria
The Salzkammergut
Salzburg & Salzburgerland
Carinthia
Tyrol & Voralberg

The geographic sections include mini-maps of urban areas, sights, activities, tours, festivals and events, sleeping, eating, drinking, entertainment and shopping, and are informative, without being long-winded. There is also good general information about the culture, clothing for seasons, emergency phone numbers and contacts and so on.

There is also a very useful detailed pull-out map of central Vienna including a transport map, sights and a detailed index. Unlike other Lonely Planet books I have used, this contains some much appreciated information about what roads to take to certain places. Not everyone will be using public transport, and communicating other options is great.

This is a solid guide, and will be of great use to the first-time visitor to Austria, or one of its provinces. It is a great reference book to have on the shelf, but if you can afford the space and weight, it will be of even more use in your backpack!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great solution for instant-coffee critics, 27 July 2014

Are you fed up of going camping and having to resort to disgusting instant coffee?

This is a perfect solution to such problems, and many others. Take the strainer out, ground coffee in, water in, stir. Strainer in, push down, drink. Simple as that. The mug will keep the coffee nice and warm, but this product would be much improved by having a lid you could snap on the top.

I often take this into work, or use it around the house if I can’t be bothered to make a cafetiere. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars When you reach a certain age..., 27 July 2014

Having reached a certain age, when hairs start making themselves clearly at home in places one might not have expected, I needed a solution. I had a good look for something affordable that could be washed, and was powered by batteries, as there is nothing worse than quickly needing to do some facial gardening only to find your device is out of juice.

This arrived quickly and was put to work in various nostrils, ear-holes and even to tackle some rogue but determined mono-brow follicles. It worked admirably at all the tasks, and is very easy to clean.

The necessity of owning one of these trimmers is somewhat depressing for me on a personal level, but is undoubtably highly valued by close family, friends and colleagues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don’t buy batteries anywhere else!, 27 July 2014
Cheap, long-lasting batteries in a useful pack size. Fast delivery - no complaints or other issues to mention really. You’d be mad to buy your batteries anywhere else, as these ‘premium’ brand batteries do last considerably longer than other ‘budget’ brands you might find in Wilkinsons or Poundland.

Fantastic value for money when compared to Canon ink cartridges, which will otherwise bankrupt you.

My main concern was the quality and consistency of ink, but I needn’t have worried, I can’t tell any difference between these and the ‘original’ cartridges - there are no noticeable imperfections or dissimilarities when printing black/white text, colour text or documents, images on plain paper and even when printing high-res photos on photo paper.

TrickleStar 180SS-UK-5XX 5 Outlet Energy Saving Powerstrip
TrickleStar 180SS-UK-5XX 5 Outlet Energy Saving Powerstrip

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, 27 July 2014
This is the first energy-saving strip I’ve used, and I have been very impressed with its solid construction, and features - notably the amount of sockets, which is perfect for your average tv/hi or PC set-up, and the surge protection, which gives me a little peace of mind.

I have set this up so that when I switch my computer on, my external HD, printer and speakers all switch on too, and likewise when switching my PC off, all the aforementioned bits are also switched off. It works like a charm!

30-Second Architecture: The 50 Most Signicant Principles and Styles in Architecture, Each Explained in Half a Minute
30-Second Architecture: The 50 Most Signicant Principles and Styles in Architecture, Each Explained in Half a Minute
by Edward Denison
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £11.99

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primer, 26 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a fantastic ‘quick-guide’ to architecture, and is comprehensive, but brief. I bought this book for a teenager curious about becoming an architect in the future, and thought it might be a suitable primer.

Fortunately, this was indeed the case. The book is hard-backed, and very well designed and produced. There are a number of informative sections such as:

Foundations - (Glossary, historical types such as Roman, Islamic, Gothic, Byzantine etc)
Key Innovations - (Arch, dome, vault, buttress, beam etc)
Projection - (Elevation, angles etc)
Theories/Concepts - (Aesthetics, voids etc)
Ideas/Movements - (Modernism, Avant-garde, post-modernism etc)
Styles - (Baroque, Orientalism, Brutalism and so on)
Future - (CAD design, sustainable architecture etc)

Both myself and the teenager found it to be very informative, as no more than two pages are spent on each point, it lists a summary of, for example ‘An Arch’, along with some bullet-points of further information and plenty of diagrams, drawings and photos.

Highly recommended as a brief overview of architecture in general, and will certainly open your eyes to the architecture of cities and towns as you walk or drive through them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don’t think about it - just add it to your basket., 26 July 2014

One-peice, lovely design, sturdy aluminium, great capacity at a ridiculously affordable price. What more can you want?

It is recognised swiftly by both Mac and PC’s, and has decent file transfer speeds.

The only negative aspect is that it is so small it is easy to misplace. As a result, I keep it clipped to my keyring so I can’t lose it quite so easily. You don’t need a large plastic drive with a button to withdraw the USB connector - get something with form and function!

Dune (S.F. Masterworks)
Dune (S.F. Masterworks)

Edition: Hardcover
Price: £9.29

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Edition, 26 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I purchased this book as a gift for a teenager. I wanted something slightly special, and this lovely hard-backed edition was perfect. It is well-bound, and lovingly presented on quality paper, with all the maps and appendixes that you expect.

The story needs no re-telling here, there is a summary, and plenty of other reviews to do it justice - suffice to say, it is a real literary masterpiece, and a genre-defining work. The scope and scale are of epic proportions, and have not been done justice (yet) in any film or TV show, sadly.

A real classic, and a perfect collectable in this version, or a perfect gift.

Plantronics ML18 Bluetooth headset
Plantronics ML18 Bluetooth headset
Price: £14.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable, 26 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I couldn’t quite believe that this headset was advertised at such a low price - surely you get what you pay for? The high number of 5-star ratings convinced me, however, and I went ahead with my purchase.

They were right - this really is unbeatable quality and value. I don’t use it a huge amount, but it is comfortable, reasonably easy to get in/on your ear, has crisp, well-definied audio, and a quality microphone. I have had no complaints speaking through it even in a convertible with the roof down.

In fact, I quite often wear it around the house to talk on the phone so I can multi-task with (usually) boring domestic tasks. Hands-free!
