5.0 out of 5 stars Great tribute, 1 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Love Billy (Audio CD)
I bought this for 29p today from a "discount" store - they were never gonna change the world, to paraphrase the bard of Barking himself, but it exudes a certain charm, melodic thrash a la Green Day but without the portentiousness.

5.0 out of 5 stars As I remembered nearly 20 years on, a masterpiece., 31 Aug. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Into The West [DVD] (DVD)
I saw this when it was first released and it made a massive impression. Recent life events made me seek out the DVD and I was not disappointed. Very uplifting but also close to this reviewer's personal bones and I sat here in tears of...catharsis is the only word for it. As Ellen Barkin says in one of the bonus interviews, it works on so many levels - a basic adventure film for kids, a morality tale and an allegory for adults who choose to look beneath the surface. Absolutely magnificent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very important book, 22 Aug. 2011
Not much to say when something is so perfectly realised. Does what it says on the cover and then some. Not for the faint at heart (especially the photo on page 36) but a stunning memorial to a period in European history that should not, cannot be forgotten.

Blood Knots: A Memoir of Fishing and Friendship
Blood Knots: A Memoir of Fishing and Friendship
by Luke Jennings
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.39

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 22 Aug. 2011
Based around fishing, this superbly written book touches on so much more. To this reader, the interwoven story of Robert Nairac provides the most poignant and interesting aspect but it's all good and wants to make me seek out more of Jennings' writing. Highly recommended.

Barca: A People's Passion
Barca: A People's Passion
by Jimmy Burns
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 22 Aug. 2011
Not a lot to add, just to echo that this is as much a history of 20th century Spain as one of Barca, especially with reference to the civil war and its aftermath, and the political differences behind the bitter Barca-Real rivalry. Very interesting, particularly for someone with personal connections to the still ongoing Francoist/Republican struggle - more subtle now but still there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and then some!, 21 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Re: ECM (Audio CD)
I just knew this would be good - how good I wasn't quite prepared for. Suffice to say it renders everything else in the "ambient" sphere, say what Eno has done since On Land, totally and utterly redundant. A cross-fertilisation of two geniuses (Ricardo and Manfred) of absolute, stunning integrity. Glenn Gould's Solitude Trilogy is the only thing near this that I have heard recently. Beyond essential to anyone with half an ear or more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Utterly vile, 17 Jun. 2011
This review is from: A Serbian Film [2010] [DVD] (DVD)
I am not easily offended and this film did not so much offend me as to make me despair of a small country in Eastern Europe. In the context of this film, Srebrenica makes absolute sense. Why are Mladic etc in the Hague? Because if this is what the intelligentsia of Serbia thinks about the national psyche then the nation is surely doomed. More doomed than Syria, Libya, Sri Lanka etc. Head for head, the Serbs have easily matched the Nazis for inhumanity - think Arkan's Tigers, throwing hand grenades into the cellars of Vukovar, think Milosevic rousing the rabble on the Field of Blackbirds 600+ years after the "heroic" defeat of Prince Lazar, trying to "save" Europe from the Turkish onslaught. Serbia, get over yourself, you are nothing and do not matter. The Croats and Russians are bad enough but, by God, they are not as bad as you. Get some therapy or do the decent thing (as Milos does at the end of this film).

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 10 May 2011
Just hear it. A timeless, amazingly brilliant if bleak record. Think of the best of Cash, Cave and Dylan rolled into one and then some...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Skelton masterpiece, 19 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Crow Autumn (Audio CD)
Wee Davie obviously knows very little about music. Like virtually everything Richard Skelton has recorded, this is a masterpiece and steeped in distillations of loss/memory/landscape. It unveils its hidden depths slowly so is indeed not something for those with short attention spans who need quick fixes!

About time too. I'll be brief - consider the following:- quoted on the front cover - philosopher Michael Ruse "The God delusion makes me embarassed to be an atheist and the McGraths show why" - indeed they do. Dawkins has become self-parody by trying to address things he is quite incapable of being objective about. Try another soundbite from Dawkins (not from this book but from Steve Reich's Dolly) - "A fish is a survival machine for genes in water" - he truly is the prince of reductio ad absurdam.
