5.0 out of 5 stars A Work of Art in Itself, 10 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Terry Frost Prints (Hardcover)
In a review of a Terry Frost exhibition for the Guardian in 2000, I wrote in part, "His best work sizzles with freshness and life-as warm, vital and direct as the man himself. Today it is not just the brightness of his colours, but his gift for combining them in new and exciting ways that makes an immediate impression. Frost's creative process combines strategy and ecstasy, and because his work is so unified, the end result is made to look deceptively simple." Those words are confirmed by this definitive collection of Frost's prints, which it is a joy to own .
Terry Frost sadly died in 2003, but the work lives on, inseparable for the many who knew and loved him from the man himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant all-round talent, 18 Sept. 2012

This review is from: Tomfoolery (Hardcover)
I gave a copy of this collection of occasional pieces as a present to Prof.John Carey, a longtime colleague of Thomas Braun's at Merton College, Oxford. He said that he was unable to put the book down until he had finished it, never having realised the huge sense of fun and manifold sides of Thomas's character that the book reveals.
What a crying shame that my brilliant cousin, who died in a car accident, was not around to enjoy its publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep rolling!, 18 Sept. 2012

A reliable product. It exercises not just the abdominals but the upper and lower back, chest and shoulders. This is a well-made piece of equipment at an affordable price that is easy to assemble and to use. I am glad that I bought it, because the one at my gym is rarely to be found.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than Trainer to the Stars, 26 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For me, the cult of celebrity is synonymous with `here today and gone tomorrow,'and Matt Roberts is known as `trainer to the stars.'
Having got this out of my system, I wish to state as a personal trainer myself that I admire this book.
Matt's two week and 12-week fitness and diet programmes can be followed at home or in the gym.
It is carefully structured with diet, exercises and personal advice appearing on the same page.
In the final section the exercises are clearly presented in both colour photos and words, and the layout of the book is a visual delight.
Like any good PT Roberts makes strict demands, but these are integral to his guarantee to get you into great shape in a short time.

The Warmth of the Heart Prevents Your Body from Rusting: Ageing without growing old

5.0 out of 5 stars Changing our Lives, 25 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Our society fears old age as we once used to fear the devil. The author argues it is not old age or even death that we need to fear, but the loss of the capacity to love and to desire. The message of this fine book that has taken France by storm is that if we change our attitudes we can change our lives.
Marie de Hennezel is a 64-year old clinical psychologist and the title of her book comes from a song centenarians sing every morning on the Japanese island of Okinawa, dubbed `the island of long life' by the World Health Organisation.
What is the secret of their contentment, their twilight happiness? M de H puts it down to their diet (lots of fish, soya, rice, green tea), a mild climate, exercise, emotional stability and energy, and resilience in the face of adversity. Oh yes, and the young there regard their elderly as good luck charms, and treat them accordingly.
The author stumbles when it comes to advising seniors with debilitating conditions and illnesses, but this is hardly surprising, and it does not detract from her unusual and valuable book.

The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War
The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive one-volume history, 11 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Robert's book involves a mastery off all aspects of the war, its huge variety realised in stunning detail. The narrative flows and there are impressive insights; for instance, when describing the discrepancy between British and Nazi ways of reporting the war. Churchill in his broadcasts habitually gave the bad news along side the good, with the result that he was trusted by the nation. German intelligence on the other hand lied about the number of hurricanes and spitfires shot down. The result was that German bomber pilots invariably came face to face with a nasty surprise, with disastrous effects on their morale.
Roberts' explanations of why Germany and Japan lost the war, and how they might have won, are entirely plausible , and his thirty pages on the Holocaust are as succinct as they are horrifying.
This definitive single-volume history is a bargain in paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars The sooner the better, 10 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Harry Guest's gift for language is matched by his wide reading and experience of life. He writes naturally and succinctly with detailed recall, observation, humour and modesty (`It's hard enough to end each day recalling where I've failed'.)
Comparisons has to do with travels that `hope by space to leave/the faults of time behind;'Conversions are superb translations or recreations of their far- flung originals in German and French.
Guest's next book of poetry will be published by Bloodaxe -and the sooner the better!

5.0 out of 5 stars Van Gogh's relation to his letters and paintings, 10 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This complex and obsessive man was passionate about life, art and people. They returned his passion, most recently at the exhibition of his letters and paintings at London's Royal Academy. People don't just admire Van Gogh, they love him, and this fine selection of letters make clear the qualities that make up this great painter.
These include a fanatical involvement in books and religion which transfers to art (`I live to paint' ) a sense of failure based on remorseless self-scrutiny (`My needs are greater than my resources') and a persistent and heroic search for meaning despite repeated failures.
The letters in this superb selection help account for this massive and lasting outpouring of affection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nick Hornby's script for An Education, 6 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was an impressive piece of work, given that Nick had only the second chapter of Lynn Barber's book to work with.None of what he writes is padding, which speaks both for his imagination and a lot of hard graft and revision.
The principles for writing a film script are similar to those of a TV report.
Words should serve to enhance images, and the fewer the number of words used, the better.
Hornby engages the reader throughout, which is one reason that the film was such a success.
