3.0 out of 5 stars Easy, but ...., 26 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Amazon Fire TV (Electronics)
VERY easy set up and operation however unhappy that promise of free download of films, which was main reason behind purchase, only applies to those on Amazon Prime, all others are quite pricey.

Quite good although needs 5 × AA batteries to make it all work and thumb wheel for till roll is far too stiff and thin.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pest of a problem, 2 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the third 8.9" Fire HD I've had and every one has exhibited the same problem! When using it to read an ebook the screen will intermittently revert to black. Pressing the power button brings up the Home page and then the correct book page, but the screen may then go black again! It doesn't always happen, and sometimes it will do it a couple of times and then 'settle', but it is a bit of a pest. Can't fault Amazon Customer Services but even they have now run out of options.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed, 24 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Stars (Audio CD)
Eagerly awaited this release but was very disappointed. The first two tracks are straight lifts from BGT and most tracks sound the same in terms of orchestration, some almost sound as if augmented by other voices (!) and one sounds like The Batchelors! The enormous canon of theatrical music from which to choose makes one wonder why they had to go to 'Ghost' for one track. The opportunity to use the sleeve notes to introduce and identify the individuals is completely lost and just becomes a list of forthcoming concerts and thank you notes to family and friends. Basically just a marketting exercise and not what I was hoping for at all.

4.0 out of 5 stars A novel rooted in fact, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As an ex Vulcan Nav Radar from the early 70s I found the book full of vivid memories of things I was either aware of at the time or personally experienced. Although promoted as a novel this is is a book rooted in fact and as such deserves to be required reading for all those interested in the history of the RAF and its role as this country's nuclear deterrent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Even handed and deeply researched., 18 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read this book from a position of relative ignorance and was very impressed by the level of research the author had obviously carried out and with the even handedness with which he dealt with the various issues. This included not only viewing events from both the German and allies perspective at the time, but also from a historical perspective in terms of what was actually achieved on both sides against the human cost. If you're interested in one of the major issues of the second world war and learning how it disproportionately distorted everything around it, I can't think of a better book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Empire of the Clouds, 14 Jan. 2011

If you're interested in the developement of British military and civil aircraft in the 50s and 60s, when the jet engine was in its infancy, and Health and Safety were considered unpatriotic; if you thrilled to exciting tales of derring do by British Test Pilots and remember sonic bangs as standard fare at Air Shows; if you have ever wondered why, with our self proclaimed excellence in aviation, so few British aircraft were ever commercially successful; this book is for you. Well written and even handed this is a book for the aircraft enthusiast but also for the economic historian, as it tracks the gross mismanagement, commercial naivety and political chicanery that brought an innovative, World class manufacturing industry down to its knees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phoenix Squadron, 4 Jun. 2009

Phoenix Squadron
For those who've read this author's Vulcan 607, this is written to the same very high standard and is equally enjoyable at many levels. Phoenix Squadron mixes international politics, naval military history, modern weaponry and strategy in the form of a thriller that grabs you from the start. It informs, educates and entertains brilliantly.
