5.0 out of 5 stars Good transfer of great performances, 31 Oct 2012
This review is from: Symphony No. 3 (Boult) (Audio CD)
This CD transfer is clearer, with less background hiss than the vanguard classics issue. Not tried DVD-A side.

The vanguard classics 2-disc set with symphony number 5 has a glitch in the LH channel near the end of the coriolan overture. This transfer does not have that small flaw.

Both performances are terrific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different Sound Balance, 24 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: From Bach to Wagner (Audio CD)
This excellent set contains the Jupiter and Pastoral Symphony performances previously issued on ICA classics.

The remastered sound balance is suprisingly different !

The ICA transfer is very light and airy, whereas the EMI is a little bass rich for my tastes.

The EMI probably has the edge, but benefits from a bass cut which allows some of the detail through.

Would be interested in other peoples views (anyone who is mad enough to buy both issues !).

The Jupiter is a sublime and glorious performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incomparable performance of shostakovich, 28 Sep 2012
I am lucky to have this performance of the shostakovich sonata on a rare melodiya 2cd set of his chamber works.

I have heard other excellent performances by Yuri Bashmet and Tabea Zimmerman, but they don't have the depth of this stunning performance by the dedicatee and his excellent piano partner. Good sound.

1.0 out of 5 stars end cut, 16 Aug 2012

The metamorphosen download has the last couple of seconds missing. VERY FRUSTRATING and no refund available ?

Had to download an inferior transfer from M&A (which benefitted from a treble boost and bass cut).

2.0 out of 5 stars Dubious quality, 20 May 2012

This download contains some nasty clicks and noises, that have probably been generated electronically.
Might be better buying the Regis or Decca CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unmissable classic performance in good sound, 9 May 2012

This is a quite magnificent performance. No western recording can match Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic at the peak of their powers in this terrifying symphony. Very similar transfer to that available on Russian Disc for a short time. Not for the faint-hearted. Well done Regis !

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb historic performance, 3 Feb 2012

This review is from: Fantasias for Viols (Audio CD)
I love these pieces and have listened to numerous recordings. This early 1965 recording is my favourite. The playing is wonderfully intimate, relaxed and heartfelt.

The recording is good, though there is a small blip at 2'50" on track 7. There is also a jump in volume at 2'10" on track 13. The fantazias seem to be in "number" order, though the artwork lists a different, unusual running order.

This is one of my three favourites. The others are Fretwork (later version on Harmonia Mundi) and Hesperion XX, who play at peculiar speeds but with conviction. Phantasm are good too, but a bit too effortful for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing performance, 22 Aug 2011

This is the earliest and best of Nikolaeva's performances of the Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues. The later Melodiya(Regis) and Hyperion sets lack the spontaneity and fire of this one. The virtuosity of the 15th fugue is staggering - even outdoing Sviatoslav Richter, who is also superb. The composer's own recordings (Revelation nla) are less virtuosic but even more moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bargain, 1 Dec 2010

This is a simple and reliable kettle. The spout is nice and long, making filling tricky things like thermos flasks very easy. The switch is illuminated and well placed. My only minor gripe is that the water indicator window is tinted, which makes checking the level a bit tricky. Have used one hundreds of times over the last couple of years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very moving short introduction by Sir Adrian Boult, 20 July 2010

Ralph Vaughan Williams died a few hours before Sir Adrian Boult was due to record the new 9th symphony for Everest. Boult recorded this heart-felt introduction to accompany the recording.
