4.0 out of 5 stars Great speed and build, screen not the best, 26 Feb 2012

I've only had this laptop for a week and so far am pretty satisfied with it. It's rapid for games, although it will never beat a dedicated gaming laptop. (for instance it can run Napoleon Total War at max settings perfectly acceptably) The build quality is good, although there's more plastic than I anticipated but it's as good as you'll get in this price bracket and spec I should imagine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great show, shame about the end *NO SPOILERS*, 12 July 2011

I deeply enjoyed watching Deadwood, the acting, characterisation and sense of time and place are simply superb. After a while, despite the fact that most of the characters range from immoral to amoral, you really get to know them and I found as I approached the final episode that I was totally absorbed in the various conflicting schemes and motivations.

The problem for me, and this is emphatically not the fault of the actors, writers or directors, is that the show was axed after the 3rd season and therefore there doesn't appear to have been given the chance to wrap up in a satisfactory way. Perhaps this was a deliberate decision but I went away from this boxset with a distinct lack of 'closure' on the series. I don't think that the stories and characters you've got to know over the previous 24 hours or so of DVD really get any conclusion.

To sum up, you will enjoy this boxset if you're at all interested in the West, or drama in general, it really is a pity that they couldn't have finished it all off - if they were out of time money or studio interest perhaps after the fashion of Band of Brothers with a voice-over of what happened to all the characters etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty average, 20 Feb 2011

I must have tried about 15-20 of the recipes in this book and most of them are completely unmemorable, with some being downright inedible! There is a multitude of recipes in here and it may be that I just haven't found the good ones yet but so far it's not good. In addition the pages are made out of the weakest paper so far used by humanity. The slightest hint of moisture - not unknown whilst cooking - causes ripping etc.

It's no disaster but there are better vegetable cookbooks out there, such as the inestimable Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian.

2.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Risible, 15 Oct 2008
This review is from: Ice Station (Paperback)
I found this book on the shelf whilst on holiday and the blurb made it sound reasonably interesting (including a quote from the Sunday Telegraph saying "This is a great book"!) Having read ~150 pages in about 2 hours (no, it's not a particularly taxing read) I was forced to give up. SPOILER. At this point a pod of insane killer whales were eating US Marines and French Commandos while they all had a massive gun fight in a collapsing Antarctic base. I'm afraid this is just not for me, especially when everything is pointed out for you as if you are a complete moron, usually by dropping down a line and writing a nounless sentence or a fragment for dramatic effect. The following is not a real example from the book:

"The Cardboard Cutout Marine dropped his AR5125 SuperHyperMagnetic Plasma Pulse Injection Vaporiser as he heard a noise coming from the Killer Whales in the pool below.

They were preparing to mate."

I can't give it a one in good conscience as I didn't bother to finish it and after page 150 it may turn into a delightful character study, Also, if you are still at school I suppose it could be enjoyable, it's just it reads like a straight-to-DVD movie starring `The Rock'. Clancy did this sort of action book a whole lot better in Red Storm Rising, I can't see what this adds, unless you simply must have an alien spaceship.

1.0 out of 5 stars Even Tim Smith hates this book, 11 Feb 2008
This is the literary equivalent of a plunging a bread knife into your own groin. If you enjoy reading endless lists of doubtful "facts" please crack on. However be warned that your family and friends may be forced to take out a contract on you as you read out yet another eyeball-implodingly boring fact from this book of unmitigated faecal slurry.

I'd buy a dictionary and read that instead, at least you'll be learning something useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy, tasty, recipes and interesting background, 7 Jan 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I primarily bought this book because I thought it might have an interesting take on some old British and Indian Classics. So far have made the Eshepherd's Pie (Basically a spiced Shepherd's Pie), which was delicious and relatively easy to prepare, as are most of the other recipes. There are other more impressive dishes on offer, such as the Bloody Mary Shellfish Mould. This is consists of pieces of lobster (or for the less overpriced version, prawns) locked in a Tomato and vodka jelly. Again this is a very easy dish but looks impressive on any table and is very tasty.

A worthwhile buy, although not as stuffed with recipes as you might think

1.0 out of 5 stars Literally the most amazing album ever, 3 Dec 2007
Imagine someone pouring a bowl of molten faeces into your face for the rest of eternity, whilst power-drilling your kneecaps. That is almost 13.5% more fun than listening to this collection of utter dross allegedly 'compiled' by Steve Wright.

Do yourself a favour, spend the money the you would have spent on this CD, buy a small hacksaw and cut your ears off. You'll have more fun I promise.

Love the Show!

2.0 out of 5 stars Unmitigated Tosh, 3 Dec 2007
Steve Wright is a cretin. If you buy this album you will be tacitly supporting his reign of musical genocide. His Sunday Show, whilst nowhere near as scrotum-detonatingly bad as his weekday show, still relies on him reading out a succession of letters in his annoying mid-atlantic twang for what feels like 8 hours.

If you wish to show someone that you love them, why not buy some ACTUAL chocolates and champagne, a compilation that was thrown together by some underpaid minion is hardly an acceptable substitute.

In short, buy this album if you hate yourself.
