I enjoyed this book and it really shows up how appalling the Putin regime is. Be very scared of Russia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy with very small print, 1 April 2014

It looks pretty good and a convenient size to carry around but you pay for it with the small print. Fine if you are young, but not so good in poor light with glasses. I have not yet gone to Bhutan but will do so in 3 weeks.

The usual Jeram-Croft splendid read with lots of action and much expert technical detail. I usually read history or non fiction but I really enjoyed this. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent insight into life in the RFC, 29 Mar. 2014

This is not a short book and there is a great deal about how the fighting men were thinking and their conflicting philosophies. For me it gave a wonderful description of what it was like to fly and fight in a Camel. It also describes life on a scout squadron where survival was very uncertain because so many of your friends were killed, and how the pilots coped with that. Tom, the main character, is a lucky, run of the mill pilot which makes the book very real. Had he been a fire eating ace would have diminished the reality, after all only 5 - 10% of pilots shot anything down. This book is a must for students of combat flying in WW1. I am a bit biased because my Father was flying Camels at the end of 1917 to the middle of 1918, the time covered in this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good and informative read., 4 Dec. 2013

Good detail and a very balanced view of the situation. The style is very readable, and I enjoyed it. There are quite a number of books published covering this period, but this is certainly one of the better ones.

If you are a keen shooter with old English guns this is interesting. Plenty of detail, but not the most gripping read. Quite a good book of reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very detailed history, 24 Mar. 2013

A very comprehensive history of the 1st Afgan war. It should have been read by all our leaders before committing our troops to Afganistan. For my taste it is almost too detailed with a great deal of quotes from the original source material, but if you want to know how not to run a war it is a good object lesson.

Not a fun read, but it will increase your knowledge.

This review is from: Modern Shot Guns (Kindle Edition)
This is an old classic written by the master salesman Greener. Very comprehensive but dated and putting it on Kindle has resulted in many typos. The diagrams are fine but as with all Kindle books are very small and difficult to read. If you are building a library better to buy the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and informative, 8 Nov. 2012

A very enjoyable book that dwells on all aspects of the period. The military history is very well known, but the difficulties experienced by the authorities at home are perhaps less so. The rise of the industrial revolution brought about much civil unrest, as the old cottage industries failed to be able to compete, and many traditional jobs were lost. It also highlighted the cost of the military adventures which took so long to pay off; a lesson which we still do not seem to fully appreciate today. In my view a very well written book which gives a useful insight into the life style of the period. It makes one thankful that we live when we do.
