5.0 out of 5 stars Blu-ray Picture Quality, 3 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the third BD of Ladyhawke that I've owned; it is very substantively better looking than the previous two, in terms of resolution and colors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Optimum Blu-ray release of KH&C, 13 Sep 2011
Just recv'd this and after watching it twice last night I conclude that it's the b&w equivalent of "The Searchers" in terms of its Blu-ray picture quality - *cannot* be improved upon! However, be aware that this is a Region "B" locked blu-ray disk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting a Bit Complicated..., 22 Jun 2011
The Region B-locked BD release of 6 June 2011 (B004KKX9AY) has better picture *and* audio quality than the remastered/improved 2007 Region A-locked Columbia/Tristar edition (UPC 043396215207), which itself replaced the initial (defective) 2006 release (at least here in the US)...

1.0 out of 5 stars "Atlantic City" R2 DVD released by Network, 11 Sep 2010
This review is from: Atlantic City [1981] [DVD] (DVD)
The picture quality of this 2008(!) UK release is awful. If you can play it, the Region 1 Paramount edition, released14 May 2002, is *far* better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Artificial Eye R2 Picture Quality, 16 May 2010
The same print as the R1 2008 Kino edition, but with a perceptibly sharper image. If you're a PQ fanatic w/a region-free DVD player, you should consider moving up.

5.0 out of 5 stars ...we happy few, we band of brothers!, 27 Oct 2009
This review is from: Henry V [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Here I compare the ITV/DVD Blu-ray release of Henry V with the 10-year-old Criterion (Region 1) DVD release.

There is no comparison in terms of picture quality. ITV have done an exceptional digital restoration of the 1944 color film, such that it must look about as good as when first released a year later. The unmodified print that Criterion used a decade ago suffered from numerous problems that made watching it a less-than-pleasurable experience. Now one can focus - in high-definition - on the terrific staging, editing and (of course) dialogue. I know this was a wartime propaganda version of the play, but Olivier somehow made this film emblematic of a larger and timeless aspect of British history.

For North Americans this "B"-locked disc is a strong argument to purchase a region-free blu-ray player. There are apparently many outstanding British films to be released in coming months in region-locked format (e.g., all of the Bfi catalog) that require such a machine, and if they all look as good as Henry V (1944) it's a no-brainer.

Kudos to the restoration team at ITV/DVD. And too bad for Criterion - they seem to be behind the curve on blu-ray releases of film classics from the mid-20th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Expectations (2008 ITV DVD Blu-ray Ed), 9 Sep 2009
This is a transfer, not a restoration. But the print used for this transfer is an excellent one, so the only noticeable problems are some scratches and a bit of grain here and there; otherwise a very clean and crisp BR edition. Kudos to the techs at ITV DVD!

I assume that some people are playing this on mid- to low-end BR machines, thus their negative evaluations. (And it is region-free, so you can get rid of your Criterion R1 Ed., which looks very anemic compared to this new one.)

4.0 out of 5 stars This Edition v. 2002 R1 Columbia Ed., 1 Aug 2009
This review is from: Metropolis [DVD] (DVD)
If you have the 2002 R1 Columbia/Tristar edition of Metropolis (and you also have a region-free DVD player) replace the former with this one! The R1 Ed is a terrible transfer, w/missing scenes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compared to previous R2 Bfi DVD of Sep2001..., 6 May 2009

this is a MAJOR improvement! First it's Anamorphic, also sharper and with better color balance. I assume the Blue-Ray Ed. is even better; these comments refer to the standard DVD edition.
