5.0 out of 5 stars I found it useful in two ways, 11 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found it useful in two ways. First, it helped me plan essays, most of which are quite simple in structure: Introduction, followed by Main Body, followed by Conclusions or Concluding Remarks. Second, it actually made the subject interesting, by providing many examples of short essays on topics in introductory economics. Well worth buying

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting viewpoint, 31 Oct. 2011
The book presents the ex-Chancellor's slightly sanitized views on what happened in the 2008 financial crises whose major effects first became visible in the Northern Rock collapse. One of the most interesting learning points is the obvious unpreparedness and sometimes downright self-interested incompetence of those charged with governing financial affairs, including the Chancellor himself in places, and the Governer of the Bank of England. Also has some interesting but probably slightly distorted views on Gordon Brown as PM, who does not seem to come out very favourably. Overall the book did not seem as gripping as it could have been, and does not provide answers for the future, but it does make you realise that you absolutely cannot trust politicians, industrialists, or civil servants to find them.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction, 31 Oct. 2011
The boook presents 38 possible reasons for the global financial crisis of 2008. The 38 have been proposed by variius other authors, and the book describes them in nice short chapters that are very readable by the non-expert. A 39-th chapter gives the Author's synthesis, also very readable. Overall, the book goves avery good introduction to what happened then that can help the reader begin to understand a little of what is happening now.
