5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY Sweet Especial Scene, 15 Dec. 2014
An amazing book and well worth waiting for. A collection of articles, musings, poetry and accounts of exploring the natural wonders of the world. There are so many themes, descriptions and words of true wonder that I couldn’t begin to detail them all. But I shall indulge myself and say I particular enjoyed the emotive poem ‘Grey Wolf Haunting’. A positive plea for us to consider the ever increasing possibility that one day there may be no more wild life left in their natural habitat. But the author also engages with humans and has regard for their fate, of their language and culture.
What emanates throughout is the author’s love of and empathy with the natural world, in all its forms. He draws from world wide beauty most eloquently and yet so very readably. An easy style but so evocative. And not only is the writing to be praised for the author is obviously an accomplished photographer. Much of the writing and photographs are of Scotland and the author’s deep love of his adopted country is displayed in both forms.
If this is only, as I suspect, a small selection of the experiences of the author’s life then I can’t wait for his biography. Having teased his readers with a insight into a life of adventure (and of his childhood in India – what gems lie there) and having only recently publishing the award-winning biography of WH Murray, ‘The Sunlit Summit’ he must surely turn to his own life. In the meantime we have this taster and it is a book I have no hesitation in recommending. It is a book of many levels and each reader will be able to enjoy it in his/her own way.

Love the way an interesting, believable character, in this case, Thomas Hookton, pervades a well researched historical background. Great reading.

Although' not as useful in my research as I thought it might be, this was not the author' fault. Found the timeline very useful. Helped to order thoughts.

Just what I wanted, a different viewpoint, to join the books already assembled for my research. Four more words superfluous!

Loved this author very early in life - mine, not his! Had the temerity to write, as a pretentious teenager, and point out an error in Latin noun/adjective agreement in one of his Rome books! Received a lovely letter in reply. Pleased his books still available.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that's well written and enjoyable, 7 Aug. 2013

What a delight to read a well-written, well-crafted book at such a reasonable price. From the Prologue, which gives us a factual account of the last minutes of the disaster, to the surprise fictional ending, I quickly became involved in two stories.
As a new-comer to Glasgow I had read the author's `Who belongs to Glasgow?' which shows, through extensive research, how the vibrant, multi-cultural community of Glasgow came into being.
In `A Spider's Thread' this attention to historical accuracy is again reflected, this time woven in with a gripping fictionalised but highly credible story.
Although the historical ending is no surprise - the Bridge still collapses - the fictional part of the story left me wanting to know what happened to Andrew, a man with a conscience, so I look forward to the sequel.
This is an author who knows how to write.
