The Gentlewoman
The Gentlewoman
by Laura Talbot
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading, 23 Oct. 2009
This review is from: The Gentlewoman (Paperback)
Miss Bolby is a gentlewoman, she displays her indian bracelets with pride as amark of breeding, a relic of her colonial past. Her post as governess to two girls disturbs her as she feels that she cannot surrender her dreams of what might have been. With WW" shattering the calm of the english countryside, servants go and their places are taken by land girls and italian prisoners of war. The Lord of the house is away fighting and the Lady of the house spends her time with the Red Cross work. She is left in a household where her pretensions to gentility no longer of consequence to those still in the house, and her identity starts to crumble. It is a disturbing story of a single woman, class snobbery and life in War time England.
