This is a beautifully filmed and acted story. About a professor who suddenly takes it into his head to trace a Portuguese writer in Lisbon. Lisbon is a beautiful city which lends itself to quality filming. and the acting of a cast to die for, is top quality also. Jeremy Irons is the professor and he is joined by an international cast of the likes of Charlotte Rampling, Bruno Ganz, Tom Courtenay, Jack Huston and a very frail Christopher Lee in one of his last performances. A good story, which I cannot reveal too much without spoiling it. Suffice to say it is an extremely well told story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch for Mary Morris taking command, 12 April 2016

This is the first of 2 series of little dramas all taking place in a village hall. Lots of stories about rivalry (political and sexual) which makes for a good, albeit slightly old fashioned, now, entertainment. This series includes a story about a second league Ballet group, and their tantrums, and how they are dealt with when the Dame who runs it all turns up. This formidable lady is played by one of my favourite actessses, Mary Morris. She has such a commanding presence with that extraordinary ugly and yet exceptionally beautiful face of hers, her great voice and of course her amazing talent, that when she is on screen no one else gets a look in. But this is not a grand standing over the top performance she is just so good she holds your attention. Riveting stuff

A bit old fashioned now, but still very entertaining. Separte little plays set in a village hall for various situations some serious, some funny, well written and well acted throughout by the likes of John Le Mesurier and Joan Hickson and a very young Elizabeth Spriggs and Kenneth Cranham to name a few. Good solid entertainment, as good as the first series

5.0 out of 5 stars Bottom is the best., 27 July 2015

This was one of the most hilarious productions I have seen. The two pairs of lovers were amazingly choreagraphed with all their complications.
All the actors were top rate, especially John Light and Matthew Tennyson as Oberon and Ariel. But for me the star of the show was Pearce Quigley as Bottom. Arrogant, rude snotty even, but thoroughly thoroughly funny. And when with the Ass's Head even better. Extraordinary performance

Frankie Vaughan, actually quite convincing as the tearabout sent to the army and his rows with the local army bully (Michael Ripper in one of his larger roles for a change, and he makes the most of it) gets him into trouble. However when he sings, then the film becomes a little cringe making (unless you are a Vaughan fan). Entertaining enough though

The Ship That Died of Shame aka PT Raiders [DVD] [1955]
The Ship That Died of Shame aka PT Raiders [DVD] [1955]
Dvd ~ Richard Attenborough
Price: £10.00

5.0 out of 5 stars The Title says it all, 28 Jan. 2015

This is a strange little story. You need to forget reality and just enjoy a slightly supernatural story, Not wishing to give too much plot away, the film stars Attenborough, George Baker and Bill Owen as a trio of war comrades using an old ship for nefarious deeds that get more and more unpleasant, and it seems that the boat is protesting. As I said, a strange story, but stick with it for the last 15 minutes has some amazing scenes and I defy anyone not to be caught up in it all. Radio Times guide didn't like it, but I found it well worth the effort

This is one of those 'thrillers' that lives up to it's name. Richard Attenborough plays the Man Upstairs in a suburban house turned into flats, who goes slightly bonkers. The ensuing story is how the neighbours, police and even the fire services cope with a potentially dangerous man.
The supporting cast includes typical terrific British character actors including Kenneth Griffith in one of his fussy roles, Alfred Burke, Virginia Maskell, Dorothy Alison, the ever dependable Bernard Lee. All make this into a highly entertaining movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chile Back on the Political Road, 8 Aug. 2014

A Brilliant read. Having read Spooner's previous book on Pinochet's rise to power in Chile, this is a must. The old rogue took some shifting, but once shifted the presidents that followed him (Aylwin, Frei Ruiz Tagle, Lagos, Bachelet, Pinero and now Bachelet again) have consolidated the economy and political status and kept the country on an even keel. I love Chile, and it is good to see that it is now considered a true member of the World Community, as indeed it should be.

This is fun. And well worth it because among all the well known faces, is Joan Hickson, a particular favourite of mine, and she is terrific as per.
