Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
Price: £4.68

4.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written evocative story of forgiveness, grace, respect and the deepness of first love, 10 Feb. 2016
A beautifully written story set in Seattle's Nihonmachi (Japantown) and Chinatown. It's 1986 and the iconic Panama Hotel is undergoing refurbishment. In the basement, hoardes of personal belongings are uncovered. These were precious and sentimental items hidden by Japanese families forced to move to internment camps during WW2, but have never been reclaimed.
The discovery evokes strong memories for Henry Lee, a recent widower. Growing up as a Chinese boy in Seattle during the war, he befriends Keiko Okabe, a beautiful, artistic and strong-willed American girl who is also second generation Japanese. The association is strictly forbidden by Henry's father but Henry refuses to end the relationship and is ostracised by his father, as well as the bullies at their American school.
As the pair carry out their lunchtime duties for Mrs Beatty - a character with more understanding and depth than we originally appreciate - they share food, stories and a mutual love of jazz. The relationship develops into love for Henry.
When Keiko and her family gracefully relocate to the internment camp, Henry keeps in touch and even manages to visit, but gradually, over a few years contact dwindles and eventually is lost completely.
Henry has a happy marriage with Ethel until her long term illness and eventual death. His relationship with son Marty is awkward and Henry is lonely. When the basement discoveries are made, Henry is worried about uncovering the past and disrespecting Ethel's memory but he has never forgotton Keiko and finds it impossible to stay away.

This book has a lot more substance than many in the romantic fiction genre. I found myself caring deeply about the characters and the outcome. A real tear-jerker. The first book I've read by this author and I wanted more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dated and disappointing short easy read, 31 Jan. 2016

Now realising why James Bond films are padded out with so many special effects and lengthy car chases. Not a lot actually happens in this book. Bond goes to casino one night, must win, does win and girlfriend turns out to be double agent. That's it. It also feels very dated and sexist. Much more so than other books of it's time. This is one of those cases where the film is better than the book.

We played this many times over Christmas and found it hilarious. The best game we've come across in a while. No complicated instructions so you can just get on with it. Though it's a drawing game, it works better when the players are NOT artistic. It's for between 4-8 players but I it definitely works better with the maximum. Only slight downside is that the pens didn't all work terribly well

They were good props for our Elf on the Shelf but the metal parts were just glued to the handles and only just hanging on. Spade broke and we barely touched it

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Book I Ever Read, 31 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Does not deserve the one star but cannot post a review without. This book is awful. Cover looks ok but is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the story.
Not a difficult read but is so badly written and edited you wonder how it was ever published. The characters are all damaged and so self-centred you cannot care about them. The men are all terribly chauvinistic and the storyline is absurd. There are murders without motive and a series of ridiculous coincidences.
I cannot think of anything positive about this book except that my friends and I laughed and laughed when we discussed it. There is no humour in it. We were laughing at it.
This will be a memorable read for all the wrong reasons.

Wanted to watch series 1 knowing that the 2nd is about to start on TV. We were gripped from the start (if a little scared!) and watched over a few nights. Brilliantly acted, especially Sarah Lancashire.

We replaced all our downstairs lights with these and now it's winter, it is such as relief not to have to change a bulb seemingly every few days. Wish we'd bought them ages ago. They were a bit of an investment but a good one. They have been in for 6 months now, none have popped and we are saving on our electricity. They look ok lit too, much better than in the picture and are much easier to fit than the old type. The only downside is that the room feels colder with this colour light

This was a book club read and everyone who read the prologue was put off reading the story itself - which is a lot more readable. We agreed that it would be better read this afterwards (if at all) as it would make a lot more sense. Set in a mental asylum, where normal order is upset by the arrival of a new resident, I found it a refreshingly unique novel and the characters were interesting, though there were quite a lot of them and it took a while to get to know them, making the second half of the book more enjoyable. It was sometimes humourous but often sad. I haven't seen the film yet but the description of the main character is not one bit like Jack Nicholson!
