4.0 out of 5 stars Nice general use lens, 20 Jan 2012
Purchased at Christmas so only limited experience to date. Good results both indoors and outdoors in low winter light levels. This lens has a lock which is essential to stop it extending when being carried. Stowed size enables it to fit in an ordinary sized carry case. This is presently the only lens I use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but annoying at times, 13 Oct 2011
I use the mouse a lot and needed the 6 buttons for the applications I use, these configured and work OK. The problem is that the mouse has problems with the surface it is working on. The blurb on the product says it works on any surface and it does, but only for a few minutes at a time! It will work quite happily on a mouse mat then you notice that the pointer is not moving smoothly across the screen, if you move the mouse onto the desk surface it functions perfectly but after a few minutes it loses interest again. It's in risk of being bounced off the wall in the near future! If this improves its behaviour I will let you know.

Master of the Sea: Charles Napier Hemy RA, RWS
Master of the Sea: Charles Napier Hemy RA, RWS
by Margaret Powell
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 14.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Under valued Britsh artist, 9 Jun 2011
Excellent portrait of a British marine artist who is sadly overlooked and overshadowed by later marine artists. His pictures show what the sea is really like and how the British sailor has struggled against it.
He should have enjoyed the same fame as Winslow Homer whose art and times he paralleled.
His painting of "The Crew" portrays the plight of men apparently cast into a lifeboat and shows them trying to put everything in order in stormy weather, it is a scene that many contemporary sailors will identify with.
The book provides a full account of his life and ways of painting and shows his studio on his own boat. You can understand why his boats look so natural and "in" the water and why his seas looks so realistic in form and colour.
A lovely book!

A generation on trial: U.S.A. v. Alger Hiss
A generation on trial: U.S.A. v. Alger Hiss
by Alistair Cooke
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Cooke, 9 Jun 2011
An excellent and unbiased view not just of the Hiss case but of American law, politics and attitudes. Unfortunately the lessons available from this episode do not seem to have been learnt.
The book provided a more detailed account of what happened during Truman's presidency than was provided on the Hiss saga in David McCullough's excellent "Truman".
Alistair Cooke is very much a radio journalist to my generation, and reading this book is like listening to one of his broadcasts with a longer time scale for the circular assessment to evolve.
He is not judgemental or trying to sway your opinion but lays it out for you to think about it and add it to your knowledge. It all happened a long while ago but it is still relevent for communist, now read Muslim.
The book may be obscure and out of print but well worth the effort to find and read. It's a pity he didn't write more in a similar vein.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!, 6 May 2011
I have had numerous editions of Philips over the years and it is still the best. I bought another Atlas one year as it was smaller but it didn't have the detail I like to have available, especially when taking to the back lanes. The only issue I have is that the page finder map is inside rather than on the back cover, but I'll get over that!
It's the next best thing to having a full set of OS Explorer maps in the car.

4.0 out of 5 stars It works just fine!, 29 Oct 2010
Order received promptly and it's working fine. The coffeee holder is nice and heavy and feels like a professional bit of equipment. We like mugs of cappuccino in the morning and the height under the coffee spout is small but problem solved by buying shorter stouter mugs. The machine fits nicely under tall wall cupboards. Follow the instructions and it produces nice hot coffee and the frother is the best I've had on the 4 machines I've had. It's durability is yet to be tested but a couple of years seems to be the norm for this price range of machines.

Charming little stories, an instant hit with my grandchildren. Windy Miller's taste for cider may not go down so well with the PC brigade these days but it adds to the adults enjoyment. He still dodges the windmills sails!

Trumpton is just as magical for my grandchildren as it was for my children and my nieces. An instant favourite along with Camberwick Green and Bagpuss
