This should be enforced reading for every politician. Outstanding thesis on why it is so had for us to admit our own mistakes. It is so much easier to compound them and blame someone else.

This review is from: Choose Yourself! (Kindle Edition)
This is a self help book for the sake of self help books. Long winding anecdotes that dispense as much good advice as you might over hear on a bus.

Having looked for headphones to wear for long periods of time, I tried just about everything in various London stores. Eventually I took the plunge having read various reviews. These are just superb headphones. Superb quality. Easy to wear. Comfortable for long periods of time and just outstanding. I cannot recommend them enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab cheap arrives quickly, 15 Mar. 2013

Wine damage on laptop. For seventeen quid it is brilliant. Mine arrived with some bent keys in the arrow area, which they immediately accepted as a return. However, I eventually just fitted it and it did not seem to matter. Compare to major retailers where you see them for 100 quid. Fab buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 31 Jan. 2013

Recently I sat through the mind numbingly boring Zero Dark Thirty. This book is both the polar opposite of that snooze fest and equally the movie they should have made. KSM claims to be the principal executor of the 9/11 plot, having backed the 1993 attempt; only going to Bin Laden for funding quite late in the game. The contrast with Bin Laden is significant. KSM continues to plot, finance and execute more plans until his capture. Astonishingly the FBI only figured out his key role fairly late in the game and KSM's astonishing boldness made him very hard to find. A great piece of journalism, that shows the greatest issues dogging the intelligence game are inter-agency rivalry, turf wars and washington egos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 31 Jan. 2013

The definitive guide as to how Tony Blair and Alistair Campbell manipulated the intelligence machinery of the JIC by pretending they had intelligence they did not, by spreading the rumours that Report X (that no one was allowed to see) contained proof of WMD and thus any dissenters should sign off on the dodgy dossier. (They retracted this claim immediately the dodgy dossier was published). Written by a senior analyst, who witnessed this whole sorry episode. A superb read that will make you're blood boil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling - You cannot put this book down., 7 Jan. 2013

UK politicians preface criticism of President Bush's Enhanced Interrogation Programme with 'The UK does not, and has not used torture.' Well if they read Ian Cobain's spellbinding book it will be the last time they will make that claim. Many will recall rumours that torture was deployed in Ireland in the 70's. This book shows the British pedigree with torture stretches through counter insurgency campaigns in Aden, Cyprus, Kenya in the sixties, fifties and forties in right back to methods used to turn German agents in WW2. Ad hoc torture in the course of warfare is perhaps is not that surprising. To find the British setting up specific torture centres where they perfected their techniques and in the case of Bad Nenndorf even adopting some from the Gestapo such as - thumb and shin screws - is almost as incredible as MI5's explanation that it was just the result of a few bad apples!

The book's conclusion, that our government has long run a dual policy of disavowing torture in public whilst facilitating it privately, goes a long way to explaining Jack Straw / SIS's enthusiasm for Extraordinary Rendition and how the soldiers from the Royal Lancashire Regiment who tortured Baha Mousa to death in Iraq felt 'they had a right, a duty even to torture civilian prisoners undergoing tactical questioning.'

What really makes this book come alive is not just the staggering hypocrisy of the politicians and the intelligence corps but the interviews with those who have survived these harrowing ordeals. Much has been written condemning the Enhanced Interrogation Programme that followed 9/11. No one else has so clearly explained that British involvement, far from being an aberration, was just business as usual. You will not be able to put this book down!
