5.0 out of 5 stars Brief history of Paganism, 15 April 2002
I wouldn't consider it as a scholary book; it is not that detailed.
It is indeed a book that is hard to put down; it's good written and although there are many pictures that aren't mentioned in the text, it is very informative. Giving in a brief way a good realistic perspective on all sorts of pagan costums and history from Greeks to Asatrú.
Once you read it; you want to find out more...Ronald Hutton a.o. also have good books on the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not that lively after all, 9 April 2002
I think I was expecting more of this cd. But in fact I personally found "Second chants" the best cd of the three Reclaiming cd's now available. Although it includes the basic chants for every coven, it isn't so lively. I didn't like the rythm and instruments. But that is my personal opinion. Lyrics are included.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good; but not all the way, 2 April 2002
I didn't know what to expect from this book. When I began to read it, it was nice. Especially the stories of the men were sometimes kind of funny. The best tip of the book was to have a joined calender somewhere, as ridiculous as it may sound. The advice was something you get through expierences. Many things of the "asking for trouble" list I instinctly never did. The interviews make the book. Although I find that the autor pointed out a bit too much on AIDS. Perhaps because this book is written a few year back; although it is a revision.
That isn't all ofcourse. The chapter on Money and Insurance is from a capitalistic view. Everyone seems to be rich and has the needs to be wealthy. No communist mentoined there. Very American I suppose.
Secondly the chapter on Religion! The author only discussed Christianity. He gives an example of throwing rice at a ceremony. If he saw the 'Wedding Banquet'(a movie that deals with gay issues) he could have given also the example that in Asia, they let a baby jump on the bed to stimulate fertility. Besides that the chapter doesn't say anything else besides Christian gay spirituality. Many Gay people turned there back on Christanity, because of the negative statements towards gay people. Perhaps America is far away from the Vatican. There are also Gay Pagans, Wicca's, Hindoes, Boeddhists and Shamans. They are all left-out in this book. I found that a bit careless.
On the other hand you can put you or your partner in the shoes of the couples that are interviewed. He also gives a bibliography at the end of each chapter, which I find a strong point. If you're Christian, Gay and Capitalist: this is your book!

5.0 out of 5 stars South African musical journey, 18 Mar. 2002
Ladysmith Black Mambazo has this overexageraded voice, when she speaks. It is really taking you of on that african journey.
The wise tortoise explains all the zulu songs and stories. With lots of clicks and animal sounds you can try to copy. One of the classic songs is The Lion Sleeps Tonight. But it is preformed in an more authentic way. That "aaawwwiiii!" is a word, I'm guessing and not some mad women screaming.
Like almost with all African songs, rythm, drumming and clapping hands are basic ingredients. There is also a children choir who preforms. Songs are in Zulu and English language.
As Fudugazi (the tortoise) wisely stated; "There is magic in these songs; close your eyes and listen, and you will feel the magic too!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, erotic overview on Toms' work, 9 Mar. 2002
What makes this book so special? Besides the images of the cliche gay macho, sailor, cowboys...?
The size of this book! I hope that you have a bookshelf where it fits in. I guess it is almost A3- format. It is also very thick, just like the provocative drawings itself. And surprisingly of all the book is a light-weight.
So expect the unexpected; just from the outside already. The images are an overview on the work of Tom, which I was familiar with. But this book, in its extraordinary printing, brings many works from magazines and other sources, combined in one book.
So if you like Toms his work; you don't wanna miss this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Boy next door, 6 Mar. 2002
This review is from: Jagged Youth (Hardcover)
This beautifully printed and binded book, has a collection of 'portrets' of American and English boys and men.
Jagged Youth includes large photoshoots of boyish men. Although I find that the cliché boys (look at me; I'm handsome) get too many pages in this book. It has many tender, playful and beautiful portrets of faces and/or bodyparts. Every boy gets his moment of fame, only solo photographs in black and white (duotone), no text.
Roffman makes beautiful art black and white photographs. Check out The Edge of Desire, Three and Tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roffman at his best!, 6 Mar. 2002
This review is from: The Edge of Desire (Paperback)
I have many books of Roffman, but this one I find the most beautiful, sweetest, sexiest of all.
It includes some of his 'Three' photosserie and some clair-obscur photographs of boys and man next door. All photographs in duotone print (black&white). Short afterword in English/French and German.
Really the price worth paying! If you leave it on a table, all your friends will certainly take a quick peek at them, whether they are gay or straight.

3.0 out of 5 stars No as good as expected, 6 Mar. 2002
David Leddick makes a selection of a few photographs and drawings of artists from 1950 to 2000. He gives background information of the artist and the model in one chosen work. Sensual, sweet, fake, weird photographs.
It isn't so good as I hoped it would be. The selection isn't my personal chose. I find it a bit to expensive for what you get. Also you can't judge a photographers talent on one work I find. He had to give at least three works of each artist.
