1.0 out of 5 stars Flimsy closing mechanism: seem bound to fail - as mine has after a couple of dozen uses, 6 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The closing mechanism has been temperamental from very early on and has now completely failed. It is plastic and very flimsy. the umbrella has not been used often but has been kept for 'best'. It has been a waste of money and I would not buy one if I were you. I am about to try to track down the manufacturer to see what they have to say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, 26 Jun. 2014

This is exactly what I need and exactly fits the description of the item.

I have already dropped the iPad onto a hard floor from quite a height and it is entirely unharmed.

Why buy the Apple version?

4.0 out of 5 stars Unconvincing: it reads like a 'B' movie., 10 Jun. 2013
Without the notion of Wallander's unexplained 'breakdown' this plot would unravel. Also, too many coincidences or lucky breaks were needed to keep it on course.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is going to be a real time waster... (read on!), 7 Oct. 2011
My Neato arrived yesterday and I used it to clean the whole apartment immediately.

It is going to be a real time-waster because I spent the whole evening following it around, my mouth half-open in amazement. Watching it march under the front of the sofas I thought it would be bound to get stuck and need rescuing. Not at all: it ventured where no-one has gone (much) before and in due time came marching out again. It even coped with one nook where it could only go straight in and straight out again. Watching it hitch up and down to extricate itself from some difficult spaces added to my astonishment.

It did have a problem in a small bedroom with numerous small areas of carpeting. I suspect it needs to get the measure of the room by being launched from its docking station in there rather than in the next room . Seeing it march on to the next room when it has finished with the previous one is also remarkable, as is watching it taxi home on completion of its work.)

Admittedly, I cleared absolutely everything out of its path, as I would for a serious 'spring clean', so it had an 'easy' run. But it was completely astonishing to see it cope with the place. A tougher test will be to leave most things (lamps, small items of furniture) where they are and see how it copes.

When it comes to suction power the jury is out. Maybe it is no Dyson but that would not be helped by the fact that the dust container is very small, as all the reviews note. That said, Neato performed well in rooms with rather less dust and covered a lot of ground without needing emptying. In one - rarely vacuumed - room it had a tough time toward the end of its run but I simply ran it again after emptying the dust container.

But note, also, that unlike the Dyson what Neato seems to collect is DUST not carpet. There was very little of the grey candy floss which fills my Dyson every time.

How long the novelty factor will last for me remains to be seen but I think it will endure in such a way that I keep the place a great deal less dusty than before. I am delighted with this contraption and think I have spent a lot of money on something which is worth it.

If you don't have money to throw around, like me you'll ponder before buying. But if, like me, your life is so full that until you have visitors coming you simply don't bother with dust you can't see, then this gizmo is likely to make life feel better and the large outlay to be money well-spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars This will take you back to those movies!, 9 Feb. 2010
A stunning recording! It totally recaptures the mood of the wonderful romantic films from which the music is taken.

I find Mr Allen's review completely bewildering and can't agree with it. (Pity he has to stoop to insults, too: hardly sign of a balanced opinion; but, each to his own.)

This is pure gold, not least for the price!

Creative 740 Soundworks Radio CD
Creative 740 Soundworks Radio CD

4.0 out of 5 stars great sound but some functionality problems, 30 Nov. 2009
The sounds from this machine is wonderful. It cannot quite match the Bose for the 'room-filling' quality (and Bose now comes with DAB) but the adjustable bass is a great bomus.

However, I had three - or was it four new remote controls during the warranty period because each one failed. The last is holding up after three years. Sometimes the motorized CD feed doesn't want to give back the CD and denies there is one in there: manual CD load has less to go wrong. Two of my friends have bought these having seen mine. One of these two is about to ditch his 740 which is undoubtedly damaging his CDs.

If you are lucky with one of these they are great but I think there is a question mark over their functional reliability.

The Book of Common Prayer & the Holy Bible (NRSV) Red
The Book of Common Prayer & the Holy Bible (NRSV) Red

5.0 out of 5 stars American Prayer Book and Bible, 22 Dec. 2008
This book is not the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England or any variation on it. It is the Book of Common Prayer (1979) of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America and is basically useless for public worship in the Church of England. The Bible is the New RSV translation.
Both parts of the book are therefore written in American English and not in British English. Whether you like that is a matter of personal preference.
As a book this is a beautiful volume and far better than anything the C of E has ever published or than the Privileged Presses have published in its name for a very long time.

Two Thousand Women [1944]
Two Thousand Women [1944]
Dvd ~ Phyllis Calvert

3.0 out of 5 stars Great period piece, 8 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Two Thousand Women [1944] (DVD)
A wartime melodrama from the days when the war was virtually won, this star-studded piece is perhaps not the best story line you'll ever see but there are some fine cameos (e.g. Thora Hird) and some excellent writing by the standards of the time. Phyllis Calvert dominates with her 'True Brit' spirit and even the less attractive characters (e.g. Flora Robson) are shown to be whatever was the female equivalent of 'decent chaps'.
