3.0 out of 5 stars Check your fittings first., 17 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I was interested in trying out LED replacements for my halogen bulbs.

However, the shape of this bulb is not the same as a standard halogen bulb, which means that it will not fit in many installations. It did not fit in any on the light fittings I have, so I took it to a friend's house to test it in his lamp.

Shape problems aside, it works very well. Just make sure it'll fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just lovely!, 13 May 2014
First 'Light in the Attic' re-released the only Honey Ltd album, now another long-forgotten album surfaces for fans of superb West Coast harmonising.

I'd heard Track 2 before, on the excellent 'Bearded Ladies Vol.1' compilation CD, so had some idea of what I was getting with this album. No disappointment here with the other songs! A wonderful wonderful album.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable memory-jogger, 24 April 2014

I am a fan of Maconie's writing style and this book, while necessarily episodic, rambles enjoyably through the history of what can loosely be called 'pop' music, reminding you of artists, songs and movements half-remembered. Anecdotes, historical context and insight are all here, in the familiarly readable style that Stuart's fans expect.

Of course, being an ex-NME writer, Morrissey's name is dropped with a deafening and deadening clang into almost every chapter (or at least it seems that way), but don't let that put you off. At least, unlike many veteran music journalists, he is capable of writing interesting and appreciative passages about styles of music that many would dismiss with a tired old one-liner.

While addressing the Punk movement, too, he appreciates the phenomenon, but doesn't slavishly toe the "Year Zero" line that so many of his contemporaries have made a lazy living from since the mid-Seventies.

Good stuff, then. Not his best book, but it should recapture a scent of whatever era defined your formative years.

I'd never heard of Eric Erickson, but I'm glad I impulse-bought this book. A fascinating tale of a brave man.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but sometimes confusing, 14 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the story, told by (most of) the surviving members of Frank Zappa's last-ever touring band and the internal ructions that tore it apart. Almost everyone involved gets an extensive say, with the exception of the drummer, Chad Wackerman, who chose not to contribute.

Some confusion arises from differing memories of exact dates and details, but the overall story is fascinating, if a little depressing in the end. There were some very strong personalities involved, not least the bass player Scott Thunes, who was (wittingly or unwittingly) at the centre of the problems that arose.

The book also describes notable performances and incidents at the gigs that were played on the tour before Frank pulled the plug on a superb band that had become unworkable. The USA leg of the tour was cancelled, hence the title of the live album from this tour, 'The best Band you never heard in your Life'.

A very interesting read for devout Zappa fans, but maybe not for everyone else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but needs running in, 14 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Straight from the box, these on-ear headphones sound a bit harsh, but I gave them several hours of nonstop play and the sound improved a lot. So if you've just unboxed yours, you haven't made a duff purchase.

The sound quality will remain very detailed, but running them in will smooth the treble and improve the bass quality. The fitted lead is long enough for portable listening, but if you use them at home, you may need to buy an extension cable.

I would also definitely advise that you replace the leather pads with the suede/alcantara ones supplied in the box as an option, as they feel much more comfortable. The phones themselves can be a fairly tight fit for some heads, but overall, I am very pleased with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the Kindle format, 14 Feb 2014

I have owned many of the 'Flashman' books in the past, but took the opportunity to get the complete set as a Kindle download.

The great advantage of this format is that you can instantly jump between the text to the footnotes and appendices and back again. When books have extensive historical references like the Flashman Papers, this is much less bother than leafing backwards and forwards between the story and the notes.

The writing itself is, as any fan of the series will tell you, an absolute joy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good umbrella, in the main, 14 Feb 2014

I've had a chance to use this in fairly windy conditions, and it feels pretty robust. It looks well-made, too.

My main criticism is the size of the handle. It is a little short to hold firmly when the wind is blowing, so you end up gripping quite hard and have to make sure you don't accidentally press the button and collapse the canopy. If the handle was about an inch longer, it would be easier to hold.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, 8 Jan 2014

I bought this to replace an ancient plastic cone. This ceramic cone is a nice object to the eyes and touch, is easy to clean, makes fine coffee and retains heat better than a plastic one.

I run it under the hot tap before use and also pre-warm the mug below to avoid having a brew that has cooled too much by the time you come to drink it.

For a more intense coffee flavour, pour the first filtering back into the cone and let it pass through again.

Chinese Lives: The People who Made a Civilization
Chinese Lives: The People who Made a Civilization
by Victor H. Mair
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £15.75

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating first step into Chinese history, 20 Dec 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
What we have here is a collection of potted biographies of notable characters from the earliest days of China to the 20th Century.

For someone who knows their Chinese history, this may not be an essential purchase, but for the majority of people with an interest in the country, this is an excellent introduction to China, based on the people who shaped it politically, philosophically and culturally.

This is also an nicely-presented book, from slip-cover to illustrations.
