Zappa The Hard Way
Zappa The Hard Way
Price: 7.71

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but sometimes confusing, 14 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the story, told by (most of) the surviving members of Frank Zappa's last-ever touring band and the internal ructions that tore it apart. Almost everyone involved gets an extensive say, with the exception of the drummer, Chad Wackerman, who chose not to contribute.

Some confusion arises from differing memories of exact dates and details, but the overall story is fascinating, if a little depressing in the end. There were some very strong personalities involved, not least the bass player Scott Thunes, who was (wittingly or unwittingly) at the centre of the problems that arose.

The book also describes notable performances and incidents at the gigs that were played on the tour before Frank pulled the plug on a superb band that had become unworkable. The USA leg of the tour was cancelled, hence the title of the live album from this tour, 'The best Band you never heard in your Life'.

A very interesting read for devout Zappa fans, but maybe not for everyone else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but needs running in, 14 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Straight from the box, these on-ear headphones sound a bit harsh, but I gave them several hours of nonstop play and the sound improved a lot. So if you've just unboxed yours, you haven't made a duff purchase.

The sound quality will remain very detailed, but running them in will smooth the treble and improve the bass quality. The fitted lead is long enough for portable listening, but if you use them at home, you may need to buy an extension cable.

I would also definitely advise that you replace the leather pads with the suede/alcantara ones supplied in the box as an option, as they feel much more comfortable. The phones themselves can be a fairly tight fit for some heads, but overall, I am very pleased with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for the Kindle format, 14 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have owned many of the 'Flashman' books in the past, but took the opportunity to get the complete set as a Kindle download.

The great advantage of this format is that you can instantly jump between the text to the footnotes and appendices and back again. When books have extensive historical references like the Flashman Papers, this is much less bother than leafing backwards and forwards between the story and the notes.

The writing itself is, as any fan of the series will tell you, an absolute joy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good umbrella, in the main, 14 Feb 2014

I've had a chance to use this in fairly windy conditions, and it feels pretty robust. It looks well-made, too.

My main criticism is the size of the handle. It is a little short to hold firmly when the wind is blowing, so you end up gripping quite hard and have to make sure you don't accidentally press the button and collapse the canopy. If the handle was about an inch longer, it would be easier to hold.

WM Bartleet & Sons Coffee Filter Cone
WM Bartleet & Sons Coffee Filter Cone
Offered by Colanders FBA

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, 8 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this to replace an ancient plastic cone. This ceramic cone is a nice object to the eyes and touch, is easy to clean, makes fine coffee and retains heat better than a plastic one.

I run it under the hot tap before use and also pre-warm the mug below to avoid having a brew that has cooled too much by the time you come to drink it.

For a more intense coffee flavour, pour the first filtering back into the cone and let it pass through again.

Chinese Lives: The People who Made a Civilization
Chinese Lives: The People who Made a Civilization
by Victor H. Mair
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 15.11

4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating first step into Chinese history, 20 Dec 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
What we have here is a collection of potted biographies of notable characters from the earliest days of China to the 20th Century.

For someone who knows their Chinese history, this may not be an essential purchase, but for the majority of people with an interest in the country, this is an excellent introduction to China, based on the people who shaped it politically, philosophically and culturally.

This is also an nicely-presented book, from slip-cover to illustrations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trust me, it's easy to install!, 2 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I hesitated for a long time about this upgrade. It is highly regarded among those who modify Rega arms, but I am not at all mechanically-minded, so was pretty apprehensive about fitting it.

Worry not! The supplied instructions make it very easy to understand and, even while neurotically double-checking each step along the way, I still had the stub attached in about 2 minutes.

What really took time was adjusting the counterweight, as it does not screw along the stub like the standard item. You just have to ease it along and get used to overshooting the ideal weight a few times before landing on the right setting. However, using a digital gauge, I had it within the odd hundredth of a gramme eventually.

My turntable has taken another significant step up in sound quality and I am really pleased with this purchase.

MUSIC FROM BIG PINK LP (VINYL ALBUM) US MOBILE FIDELITY 2012
MUSIC FROM BIG PINK LP (VINYL ALBUM) US MOBILE FIDELITY 2012

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Big Pink' as it always should have been?, 7 Nov 2013
I have owned a copy of this album for many years and, although I loved the music, I always found that it sounded a bit 'thin' and lightweight. Doing a bit of research, it seems that the record label Capitol had originally released it with the lower frequencies equalised out to a certain extent.

Mobile Fidelity's reissue claims to be from the pre-equalised master tapes and I can well believe it. Suddenly this album sounds much better, with Levon's drums and Rick's bass present and proportionate within the framework of the band's sound.

Highly recommended - now this remastering has been released, there's not much point in buying any other version.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun to play, but..., 19 Sep 2013

This review is from: Stick Tennis (App)
This plays a little like a Japanese game I remember from a few years ago, but this is more challenging and a little less controllable.

I enjoyed playing Stick Tennis a lot at first, but then there was an update to the software and now you have to buy buy buy, just to play a game. Too bad - let's hope they don't ruin Stick Cricket the same way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mostly excellent, 9 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I took a long to time before finally entering the world of eBooks, and the Kindle software for PC was a good way to find out if I'd enjoy reading off a screen. It also meant that, by the time I actually bought the Kindle Fire, I already had a bit of a library going.

I enjoy using it as a reader, although in strong sunlight it is obviously not as legible as a regular Kindle. There are also a few unusual books I've bought that would have been too expensive or unavailable on paper. I don't use the non-reading functions a lot, so I'll leave opinions on that area to other reviewers.

I have only two real gripes:
1. It does not come with a mains charger, and the recharge you get from plugging the supplied lead into a PC/Mac is very slow. I feel a mains charger should have been included, even if it added a few quid to the price.
2. The headphone socket is a little too recessed for some plugs, even when the Kindle is removed from the aftermarket protective cover.

...and one other matter, which is the lack of a rear-facing camera. Taking photos is a bit of a lottery without being able to line up the subject in a viewfinder. However, this would have made the Kindle a fair bit more expensive, so I can live with it.

I can see that some would expect it to be capable of more, but I suppose it depends how you see it; a tablet computer with limitations or an eReader with bonus functions.
