Ideal if you need a shutter release for occasional tripod work. It's plasticy and basic, but excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story of humanity, 13 Aug 2013

I'm a big fan of cycling and the Tour de France. Consequentially, I was not a big fan of drug-cheat David Millar. However, reading his Twitter feed had given a glimpse of the man under the labels. This book ripped his life open for everyone to see - the talent, the idealism, the exciting but vile place cycling was in the dirty years, his depressions and excesses, the breakdown of his resistance against doping, his arrest and ban, his comeback, and finally his redemption.

Literate, honest, interesting, depressing, uplifting - this autobiography is one of the best I've read,

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't be faulted for the price, 19 April 2013

You're not going to mistake this tripod for the work of a German artisan craftsman, but for the price it's excellent. Doubly-extensible legs, three planes of motion, a wind-up centre column, carrying handle, self-levelling feet, a bubble spirit level, and a bag to carry it all in. If you're dabbling with long exposures or want pin-sharp landscapes on a budget, buy this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bought as a present, and it went down well, 7 Jan 2013

Bought as a present for my knitting mother, and she liked it a lot. It's reasonably well made, looks very nice, and is big enough for her to keep her needles, her wool, and her work in progress. You'd probably want a bigger one if you have a lot of wool to store, though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money, 5 July 2012

I'm loving it, and the sleep I'm now getting. The fabric is smooth and comfortable, and the adjustable elastic strap seems pretty secure. I do sometimes wake up with it around my forehead instead of my eyes, but I can't imagine any design will stop that happening. My only reservation after a couple of weeks is that the edges are curling a little, so I'm hoping it doesn't start letting in light.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book: good. Kindle version:so-so, 8 May 2011

The book is pretty good, taking you through the major iPad features you'll be interested in (split-view, popovers, etc). They admit up-front that it was written using the preview version of the SDK, and so might not be entirely up-to-date for the latest SDK.

Unfortunately, the Kindle version of the book is hit-and-miss. The source-code is provided as images. When it takes up less than a full page, you can zoom into it in landscape mode, which is annoying but usable. However, if it takes up a full page, you can't zoom, and for me the text-size was barely readable. I can understand why they need to provide it as images, to preserve formatting that the Kindle can't do as text, but I can only assume that they either didn't proof-read the Kindle version, or their proofreader has 20/20 vision. If they'd simply split each image into two, then I could have zoomed on each on in turn - again, annoying but usable.

(The source-code is also downloadable from the publishers, but that rather misses the point of the Kindle)

5.0 out of 5 stars No Hold'em library is complete without it, 11 May 2005
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are many poker books out there. Some are insightful, but written with an unengaging, dry style (Sklansky, for example). Many are written with the folksy style of an excellent poker player but mediocre writer (I'm thinking of Cloutier, particularly)
Harrington on Hold'em, however, is wonderfully written. Clear, consise, and easy-to-follow prose draws in the reader - and what they're drawn into is an excellent walkthrough of the thought processes involved at each stage of a no-limit hold'em hand.
The authors explain the fundmentals of hold'em, such as pot-odds and implied odds, how to read a table, and how to play against various styles of player. They then go through starting hand requirements, pre-flop play, flop-play, turn and river play. The highlights of the book, though, are the many example hands at the end of the chapter. Here, Harrington takes the reader, step-by-step, through various situations, explains the analysis needed, and recommends a course of action based on the analysis.
It's hard to see how any recreational hold'em player could fail to get something out of this book. For a novice who has a decent grasp of the basics, it should be a revelation. I can't wait for volume two.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Effort, 1 Nov 2002
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The introductory material in the book is rather brief for my tastes. There are short pieces on how to hold the mandolin, how to pick, how to tune, an introduction to the musical notation used in the book, and some scales. I would have liked more exercises given to build up to playing actual tunes
Around a third of the book is taken up with song tabs, with instruction on how to play them being a little sparse. However, the tab is very clear, and they really come into their own with the excellent CD that accompanies the book. Each song features on the CD twice - once with the mandolin piece, to help you understand how it should be played, and once with only the backing (banjo, fiddle, guitar) so that you can play along.
Without the CD, I'd rate this book at two stars. With the CD, it gets a fantastic 4.
