4.0 out of 5 stars Firm massage, 1 May 2012
This is for people who prefer firm massages.

For the calves, it feels similar to being massaged by a burly guy. This is the primary reason for me to keep this massager.

For the feet, it does not feel 100% natural and can hurt depending on where you position your feet in the device. I would suggest moving your feet around and play with the settings. If you are after a massage for the soles of your feet, the manufacturer has a shiatsu foot massager that does the job.

4.0 out of 5 stars More human interest than science, 17 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is well worth reading due primarily to the human interest element rather than science. It left me thinking about bioethics issues, particularly informed consent and end of life choices. No science background is required to fully appreciate the book.

The author clearly made an effort to bring Henrietta Lacks, the person, to life, which to me was the most interesting part of the book. I also appreciated reading about how her children reacted to her legacy.

With such a compelling story, the author could have pushed the reader to learn or think more about the science and ethical issues. If it was an editorial decision, I hope it would not be repeated in the next book that the author writes. Other authors have successfully enticed readers to learn about topics that may not be of interest... the way Michael Lewis did for football in the Blind Side.

I see that the author is writing a new book... it would be great to see a balanced discussion on the ethics of animal testing. It would be a good link to this book... understanding the sacrifices made to advance human medicine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some receipes are trickier than others, 22 Jan. 2012
I have baked 5 times from the book. All attempts produced tasty treats but not exactly the same as the bakery. Also, the book does not contain some of the internet tips.

Blueberry muffins. Best outcome yet. Batter was thick enough to support even distribution of blueberries throughout the muffins.

Spinach and cheese muffins. The dough turned out to be very stiff, and I made it without the spinach. The spinach-less muffins were delicious, especially served with pea and ham soup.

Cream cheese frosting. There was a tip online that states you must use full fat Philadelphia cheese. This was not mentioned in the book. Also, I find it sufficient to beat the frosting for 3-4 minutes after the cream cheese mixed with the buttered sugar, instead of "at least 5 minutes" as instructed. My signal is to beat it for 1 more minute after the mixture increased in volume. The recipe does require some suspension of disbelief in that the initial step calls for beating quite a large amount of sugar with butter, then add cream cheese. You should go ahead and follow those directions (effectively making buttered sugar first), instead of beating all 3 ingredients at the same time. Too much beating of the cream cheese begets a runny frosting.

Red velvet cupcakes. I tried this twice. The second attempt resulted in cakes that were much closer, but still not the same as the bakery. For the second attempt, I used the specified brands of cocoa powder (Green & Black, not mentioned in the book) and food coloring (Dr. Oetker, although only natural red was available in my local supermarket, and as the website warned, it resulted in cakes that were brownish red). Re: the cocoa powder, I read the label and it turned out to be "dutch-processed" while my other attempt involved "pure" cocoa powder. Seems to make sense for this change to have resulted in a big difference in flavor. Most US baking recipes requiring cocoa powder specifies it to be dutch processed. The process affects the pH of the cocoa powder itself, and of course the batter.

Green tea cupcake. Not sure if this recipe got a fair shake. I tried this recipe with "pure" not "dutch-processed" cocoa powder. Also I used real (nice) tealeaves instead of teabags, and soaked the leaves in milk for almost 24 hours. The resulting cupcake had very subtle tea flavor and fluffy texture. I will definitely try it properly on another occasion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Stopped working within months, 18 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When the product worked, it worked well for my purposes, which is to turn on a daylight lamp 1-2 hours prior to the alarm. Unfortunately, within months, the light would turn on at random times, sometimes early, sometimes late. Setting the "current time" is fiddly, and finally, the parts snapped during one attempt.

A disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the money and effort, 16 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The end product looked good and was sturdy.
One note on the color - it is actually a grainy grey on black, not pure black. It looked fine amongst modern black furniture so not an issue for me.
The delivery to central London was done by Citylink and was dispatched the day after I placed the order, allowing for arrival 2 days after placing the order.
The instructions were good, but there is no getting around the fact that it will take time to assemble, and all of the usual rules apply for flat pack furniture.
The only minor design issue is with the storage space on the left hand side. The CD area is quite narrow so it is of limited utility for even the OEM CDs that I have. The shelves are also of questionable value if the desk is up against the wall.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good outcome by default but uses lots of ink, 13 Jan. 2012
I use this printer for my home office to print regular documents and client presentations that are primarily charts/graphs. I am satisfied with how the client presentations look. I have not yet printed photo's.

The printer is unable to do borderless printing on plain paper. The default print margin is a bit strange. For example, if you print a landscape presentation on A5 paper, the left margin is 1cm, the right margin is 1.3cm, the top and bottom margins are 3mm. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to adjust the margins.

After ~150 pages of printing (80 pages in high quality color and the rest in standard quality color), one of the the introductory ink cartridges is running low and needs to be replaced. Another one of the cartridge is at 50%, and the third is at 75%.

In terms of installation, it was straightforward using the CD for the drivers and the connection to the wireless router was no more challenging than connecting a netbook/smartphone. I had some trouble connecting the netbook which has no CD or DVD drive. I tried to find the printer drivers on the internet but had no luck. Finally solved the issue by connecting my netbook to the home network. At first, the netbook recognised the printer but didn't allow printing to the printer. Somehow, eventually, the printer drivers were installed and now it prints fine.

Overall, it is a good printer for my purposes although the ink usage is high! Also, it doesn't appear that the printer allows much customisation and I can see it would be difficult to fix anything that is not right by default.

4.0 out of 5 stars Supplements weak daylight, 12 Jan. 2012

The bulb works well during the cloudy winter months when daylight is weak. When it's pitch black out, the light looks artificial. Overall a good product for supplementing weak daylight.

This mixer does not require you to scrape the side of the bowl when beating egg whites, butter, etc. The motor is pretty powerful so be careful not to overbeat.
