5.0 out of 5 stars Solving several mysteries, 13 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ashdown-Hill, the author of "Eleanor: The Secret Queen" and discoverer of Richard III's mitochondrial DNA, revisits marriage law since 1050 and investigates several cases since then. He applies the medieval canon law that underpinned "Eleanor" up to the 1530s but also English and Scots law and his usual scrupulous approach to the evidence in hand.
If you want to know how many wives Henry VIII, Charles II or George III actually had, this is the book for you. It includes a chapter on Edward IV's secret marriages and some revelations about Edmund "Tudor"'s paternity.

5.0 out of 5 stars An innovation, 11 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you have ever wanted to read a book about Richard III in which all the hostile posthumous propaganda is stripped away so that you can read the reports in the order they were made and judge them on their merits, this is it.
When you read those latter reports and analyse them, you will imagine our own era being reported by C26 historians who treat Dempster and Hickey as "reliable" sources, a very alarming comparison.
There are some updates to one chapter, the conclusion and the photographs. For this version, be sure to look out for the red panel on the front.

5.0 out of 5 stars A regular gem, 11 Jun 2013

If you have seen a previous edition of this book then you will know how good it is and won't be reading reviews in detail.
If not, you need it. It summarises all Tests from the past year with career records, the county season with career records, player profiles and fixtures, general records and probable touring squads for New Zealand and Australia, all for under eight pounds.

The usual combination of great articles and photos with John Griffiths' typically accurate statistics. I could almost refer you to last year's review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A complete summary ..........., 31 Mar 2013

.......... of how Richard III came to be buried where he was, to stay there despite his environs changing from a Friary to a private garden to a school and now a car park, how he was exhumed on the 525th anniversary of his burial and identified by his age, era, diet, family, scoliosis and fatal wounds; also how a seventeenth-generation matrilineal descendant of his mother was identified in Canada as the final piece in the jigsaw, despite three of that line's husbands being executed.
Written by one of the principal experts behind the search!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece, 5 Jan 2012

The IRB Yearbook is always worth the wait but this edition comes with full coverage of the recent World Cup. Words by Morgan and statistics by Griffiths - surely the best off-field partnership in rugby?

British Lions
British Lions
by John Griffiths
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Facts and figures together ............, 9 Mar 2011
This review is from: British Lions (Hardcover)
John Griffiths is surely the World's foremost rugby statistician and this is arguably his best book. Published a year after Calder's (1989) Lions defeated Australia 2-1, it has the visitors' line-ups for every Test played against Springboks, Wallabies and All Blacks with their scorers, plus lists of the squads, a lot of narrative for the early tours, photos and pen-pictures for the more recent ones.

If you are reading this, Mr. Griffiths, this book only lacks the three tours of Argentina (1910, 27 and 36) and ............... an UPDATE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the book a serious ellipsophile needs, 1 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The IRB Yearbook is a continuation of the Rothmans' series. It includes reports of just about every international played in the previous season, together with reviews from twenty or so countries, covering the domestic and supra-national club rugby. There is a copious preview of the forthcoming World Cup, together with summaries of the previous six finals.

There is a records section as well and some pictures of refereeing signals. Paul Morgan is a very good editor and John Griffiths is the world's leading rugby statistician.

........... of Sir Tim Rice's work, both his early collaboration with Lloyd Webber and his later work. This CD (or other format if you prefer) is full of truly memorable songs. The Gilbert and Sullivan de nos jours haven't worked together since the late 70s (except one new song in the Evita film) but Rice's subsequent work is of high quality.
