This review is from: Gowi Toys Boat Cuxhaven (Toy)
Basic, old-fashioned boats for toddlers with a hole at the front for string. Very good for paddling pools, maybe a bit big for the bath at 11inches, though possible. Sturdy plastic and good for combining with light-weight little figures, such as Lego people, which can stand on the deck.

The Things Between Us - Living Words: Anthology 1 - Words and poems of people experiencing dementia
The Things Between Us - Living Words: Anthology 1 - Words and poems of people experiencing dementia
by Susanna Howard

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational collection of poetry, 25 May 2014

I love this book, both as a collection of poems and in what it represents as the tip of the iceberg of the wonderful work Susanna Howard has been doing with dementia sufferers and carers. It captures the language slippage of dementia, distressing but also liberatingly creative and humorous in a way that is so reminiscent of Beckett's plays: 'I'm dying for a couple of tea,/Haven't had a cup of tea,/I'm dying, oh I hope not...' But it also conveys how sad the sufferers feel, how deep-down bad they feel in a way they haven't been able to process, let alone express: 'I'm frightened/To say anything generally'; 'I don't know what/ I'm doing here./Wasting my time.' One of the most powerful aspects is that so many of the poems reflect the strong relationship between dementia-sufferer poet and the listener-amanuensis Susanna, who is named in some, referred to indirectly by many, and addressed in several as a co-inhabiter of the very restricted physical space the sufferer-poet feels newly trapped in. One concludes that it has taken a certain kind of listening to allow these outpourings - a lesson for all of us concerned about the impact of dementia on people's lives, a reminder that it is more than a question of the undoubtedly problematic logistics, often paramount for a family and carers to deal with. We can do something about the quality of attention we give too it seems, and it is extremely hopeful that the evidence of the ‘Living Words’ project is that both dementia sufferers and carers benefited enormously – felt better and cared better – from something as simple as language, using and listening to words in a qualitatively different way. Finally, however, the poems sum up so well something universal about human life: that mixture of comedy and tragedy, joy and despair, death waiting for us but endless possible distractions and fulfilments along the way, not least of which someone’s smile or ‘a couple of tea’.

This review is from: Dear Zoo (Board book)
Another excellent Campbell flap-book with clear and humorous animal drawings - each animal revealed is wrong in some way until the final image of a little dog is revealed as the perfect pet. My 9-month-old grandson loves it but definitely for 18 months onwards.

Cars and Trucks and Things that Go
Cars and Trucks and Things that Go
by Richard Scarry
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Scarry book, 14 Feb. 2014

Excellent, humorous detail and a nice extra game of 'looking for Goldbug' on each page. Using it with an 18- month-old grandchild - perhaps still a little young but he's very interested in different kinds of vehicles and is enjoying the many invented vehicles Scarry gives on each page. Different strands of story are developed throughout.

Excellent clear animal pictures and fun use of flaps. This was Rod Campbell's first one and the flaps are more vulnerable to being torn off than the later ones - but can be stuck back quite easily. My grandchildren of 9 and 18 months love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A challenging read, 10 July 2013

This is a powerful tale which is an excellent extension to Achebe's first novel Things Fall Apart. Use of the Igbo dialect is a bit difficult for those unfamiliar with it but Achebe finds a way of clarifying what is meant without pandering too much to the non-Igbo English reader.A tale about arrogance and narrow-mindedness on both sides - colonial and tribal.

Extremely useful - good size for baking and freezing and attractive enough to go straight to table. I have four now and use them for freezing multiples for family get-togethers. You don't need to worry about ingredients such as lemon which react with tinfoil products (though tinfoil trays come with useful card lids), and they're lighter than other materials used for baking dishes such as terracotta. Great for medium-sized lasagnes, crumbles etc.
