4.0 out of 5 stars War , Heroes and Woe, 9 April 2012

This review is from: Classic War Collection [DVD] (DVD)
I like this collection, yes I know it is, for the most part, how the Americans won the war but there are some classics here

Great Escape - Now you don't have to wait for Boxing Day to see it,
A Bridge too Far - Market Garden, Monty's brainwave, loaded with a veritable "Who's Who" of the film industry
The Longest Day - Now if you want to see the stars without a telescope, this film has a veritable "Milky Way"
Von Ryan's Express - Ol Blue Eyes, acting! Well I think he sings a whole lot better..
The Battle of Britain - Big Hit when it came out and not to be outdone by The Longest Day and Bridge Too Far, came up with a cast list almost as long
as a telephone directory, sadly a good few were badly cast.....
Tora Tora - Not for the feint hearted, subtitles....but well shot nevertheless
Patton - George C Scott - Hamming up General Patton.....In the cinemas this epic came on about 13 cans of film, weighed a ton.
The others I have yet to watch,

I don't know Pebbles on the Sand so will have to sit and watch it then decide...

1.0 out of 5 stars NFS - The Run -, 9 April 2012
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars

NFS for me means Not F....g Satisfied.

I like this genre and have played almost every incarnation of it since the year dot. So it goes without saying that I was always going to buy The Run.
I wish I hadn't, it came from Amazon in double quick time ( as always) but that is where any similarity to speed ended.

It would not install from the DVD no matter what I did to encourage it to do so, so I had to register my version on the Origin website then download it,
It took forever, but did eventually download and install.

I like the very smart rendering of the background scenery and I think (IMHO) that the cars look even more realistic.

The cut scenes are Ok, but I am not a fan of them in most games, but when it comes to the action slots X A B YY A Top Left , well that is not what I play
NFS or other racing games for.

Leave that to better action games like Medal of Honour, Hitman etc.......

And why oh why have they removed the ability to install XBOX 360 compatible controllers, previously all you did was replace the Input files in the root directory
with a 360 emulator file giving you a fully programmable controller. I don't like the bog standard layout and usually remove the "camera controls" from the keypad completely

But worst of all is the lack of response to any keypad ( and I have tried 3 (all good ones )) that leaves the car going in a straight line longer than you want it to,

I am now in the Industrial Area with 2 seemingly indestructible Porsche Cayennes ( which I must consider buying )a helicopter blowing up everything around me and finding
it impossible to turn fast enough to dodge all manner of debris....

So NFS The Run....should be renamed NFS Good Game Ruined..

Samsung DVD-C550 1080P Upscaling †DVD Player

5.0 out of 5 stars Value for money, 16 Mar 2012
Want a cheap DVD player? Want one that has a brand name on the front that is familiar? Want one that upscales, plays MP3, Div X etc?

Well this one has it all, plus a simple but effective player menu, good image quality and it is compact. My one gripe is that the composite
audio output level seems to have been pre-set at a lower level than my previous players so I do find myself having to increase my output volume
levels on TV/Surround sound etc.

It's a small gripe when considering it against the price of the unit.

(psst...It can play multi region discs, with a little help wink wink )

Now what shall I watch now..........

5.0 out of 5 stars UPS ( Not the Brown Vans), 16 Mar 2012
Uninterruptable Power Supply ( UPS ) a must for anyone who values their IT equipment and software. The Trust 1000VA UPS is compact, stylish, (well as stylish as a lead acid battery can get I suppose) but most of all, it does what it is supposed to. I live in rural Spain and our power supply is mains grid, but very unstable, with brown outs, black outs and varying RMS peaks, that it makes using unprotected IT equipment foolish at best.My wife works from home and is constantly on line to offices in Madrid, UK and Germany, so stability is essential. Her Trust UPS protects her laptop, modem, external HD and the telephone line from Earth strike spikes. I have another Trust protecting my touchscreen, HD and printer. Since the installation, which was a piece of cake, we have had 1 power cut, typical!! but they kicked in straight away and both units gave us more than enough time to close application and shut down the equipment in a controlled manner. Bigger units will of course provide longer back up times than these, but to be honest if you have a power cut and it takes you longer than 5 minutes to close down your apps and equipment, then mobile UPS units are probably not what you are looking for.
Should you buy one? To be honest I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't.

My wife loves Dickens, especially A Christmas Carol. Sadly during our move we lost her treasured copy of said book, so for her birthday this last February,I decide to replace it and add a couple of other Dickens titles to the surprise. So it was I came ( as usual) to Amazon in search of A Christmas Carol and found this wonderfully leather bound Barnes & Noble compilation. It is without question a lovely book to possess and would adorn anyone's bookshelves. Sadly it is not a great book for the reader. It is, heavy, something I had not considered, it has very thin paper for the pages and whilst the guilt edging makes it stylish, they are delicate. The worst thing of all though is the typeface, which is very small. I wear modest varifocal spectacles so I am not that hard of vision, it is hard work. My wife, ever the diplomat, Ooh and Ahh'd over her gift, but it has not moved from the shelf where it was put on said Birthday. So in a nutshell, if you want to read Dickens and in my humble opinion, everyone should, then don't buy this compilation, it is not for the reader. If you want a very nice family keepsake that you can pass down as a heirloom, then this is the one for you,

Lenovo IdeaCenter A700 23 inch All-in-One PC (IntelCore i3-530M 2.26GHz, 4Gb, 640Gb, TV Tuner, Webcam, BT, Win 7 Home Premium)

5.0 out of 5 stars Have you heard of Lenovo?, 11 Oct 2011
I had not heard of Lenovo prior to looking for my new PC, but during my research the name kept appearing. So I take a look at their website and check out their background.

I liked what I saw and the product range is comprehensive enough to suit most users needs. Personally I ended up buying the A700 Idea series 23" Touch screen all in one.

I have had this unit about a month now and I have only encountered a couple of minor irritations.

1. The bluetooth setup for Keyboard and Mouse was not as simple as they would have you believe, it took something like 8 attempts before mouse and keyboard were seen by the PC.
2. The bluetooth mouse is not as responsive as my old Inteli Wirless Mouse from Microsoft. The Lenovo bluetooth mouse is prone to interference when the PC is accessing USB peripherals and causes
really annoying lags and spurious mouse responses. So my MS mouse is back in use, with no such problems.

The screen is clear and bright and I have yet to really get to use the "Touchscreen" so I can't say if it works well or not but it does utilise the latest Surface Wave tech so I am guessing that
it will be ok, but I really don't have a great need to use it.

Sound from this unit is amazing, incorporating Dolby home Theatre through inbuilt JBL speakers. In a modest space additional speakers would not be needed.

It comes with a built in UHF tuner incorporating Freeview decoder so for anyone in UK this could easily double up as your TV and with it's inbuilt DVD/CD player, just think of all those
mains sockets you will have spare and no cable spaghetti to continually fight with.

I like it, I am not sorry I bought it and would tell everyone who is thinking of purchasing a new PC, especially if an All in One is on that list to take a long hard look at the offerings from Lenovo.

WD My Passport Essential 500 GB Midnight Black Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0)
WD My Passport Essential 500 GB Midnight Black Portable Hard Drive (USB 3.0/2.0)

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Service Good Product, 31 Aug 2011
Well my new WD 500GB Passport drive arrived today which pleased me as it was a very fast delivery to my little village in rural Spain.

The WD Passport is a new format USB 3.0 & 2.0 external drive which draws the required power from the USB port, so no additional wires and sockets required.

It set up as easy as it was to remove from the packaging that it came in...

The disc management suite that is included on the disk is as I speak, backing up the whole of my wife;s pc.

So whilst it may only be day 1 of ownership, thus far it really is doing what it says on the box.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worth Dying For? No not really, 12 April 2011
I like Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels and have enjoyed them all more or less.

That said however, this was a tad predictable and thus the end was telegraphed very early on.

So on the one hand this made it an easy ready but on the other a little too much like other
commercial , knock em out novels written by lesser authors,

Worth Dying For?

Well not for this reader.
