5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful sunshine sounds, 21 Nov 2013

This review is from: Love Vibes Too (Audio CD)
At last the follow-up to Expansion's excellent Love Vibes compilation is with us, and what a cracking set of tunes this is. Most have been unavailable on CD and will therefore be essential additions. Tracks are lifted from albums from the late 70s through to the mid 80s and are bright, optimistic, feel good magic. Songs are all strong, mid to up tempo, with lots of guitars, strings, some light 80s electronic touches and, of course, top notch vocals. Imagine walking into one of the smaller side rooms at a soul weekender late on a Saturday afternoon, and this is the kind of selection you would have heard - not anthems, but tunes picked by passionate experts who are looking to encourage their audience into exploring artists and discovering hidden or underplayed album gems. Ralph Tee is involved in the selection, so you know the quality will be high, and he's joined by Steve Cole and Paul Clifford. Favourites for me include Peabo Bryson's 'Paradise', the 80s groover 'I Can't Shake This Feeling' by Klique and the opener, 'Day Dreaming' by Cold Fire. You also get lovely stuff from Muscle Shoals Horns, Linda Clifford and Bloodstone. If you liked the Natural High compilations from WSM, this CD is perfect for you. Only (minor) gripe is: Why didn't Expansion issue this CD before the summer? I would have played it to death throughout the warm months because this is sunshine music. Even the cover illustration says 'summer' to me! Maybe licensing issues delayed the release. Buy it today and you have a wonderful batch of upbeat, soulful tunes in your collection to play whatever the weather. Hopefully there'll be a third installment too...

5.0 out of 5 stars The 'boogie' balance is just right, 13 Nov 2013

You probably have to have been seriously into 'boogie' in the mid 80s or a new enthusiast to the genre to totally 'get' this compilation. As soul and funk artists and producers embraced electronic instrumentation during the early to mid 80s and 'electro' was becoming more recognised, clubbers like myself found their record purchases showed quite a variety of sounds, with diva vocals, vocoders, proto raps, drum machines and genuine soul all in the melting pot. And that, in essence, is the 'boogie' sound that is presented here: good time tunes full of soul, funk and a healthy dose of 'new' technologies. It was fun then, and it still is. Tunes offered on this CD vary hugely from the late disco of Sylvester's 'Give It Up' to the electro of 'Electrophonic Phunk' by Shock USA via the much-loved soulful dance of 'Can't Get Away (From Your Love)' by Carol Williams. But played from start to finish, this collection works really well as a definition of the boogie genre and as a smile-inducing, get-down party playlist. Sound quality is, as usual with BGP, excellent and pulls from labels such as Vanguard and Fantasy. Highly recommended. Go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshed, revitalised, remembered!, 13 Nov 2013
2013 has been a great year for old soul boys and soul girls. Joey Negro's immaculate remixes of fondly-remembered tunes from back in the day has given them a refreshing new lease of life. And this collection sits perfectly with Tom Moulton's Philly Re-Grooved Volume 3 and John Morales' M&M Mixes Volume 3 to complete a hat-trick of respectful and inspired remix CDs for 2013. Joey has chosen some under-played tunes as well as some more well-known, and there's a good mix of tempos and sounds. Particular favourites include two of the 'slower' tunes: Ashford & Simpson's "Over & Over" and Bobby Caldwell's "Down For The Third Time". I can't remember the last time I heard Narada Michael Walden's "Tonight (I'm Alright)" and Kleer's "I Love To Dance" so to hear them refreshed and revitalised is a truly joyous experience. Good work, Joey. Essential purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly essential disco compilation, 13 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've brushed past this compilation on several occasions but then I re-read the tracklist and investigated. And surprisingly, amongst the headline tunes that we all know and have multiple copies of, there are several tracks that have either never been released on CD or are only available on long-deleted or out-of-print reissues. Rose Royce, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Detroit Spinners, Love De Luxe, Ben E. King, Candi Staton, Mass Production, Light Of The World, Patrice Rushen and Roy Ayers Ubiquity aren't available elsewhere as far as I can see. That's 10 tracks that most of us won't have for £4.50. And that my friends is a great deal. If the CD artwork wasn't so naff and there weren't so many obvious choices included I'm sure this CD would have sold many more. Ironically, if it had a cool cover, was a single CD with just those 10 rare tracks and marketed as 'rare' or 'deleted' disco compilation, I would have paid a tenner for it. But with naff graphics and lots of well-worn tracks I passed it by. Silly me. Good job I looked again. So I recommend it. Buy it now before Rhino delete it!
