An English Affair: Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo
An English Affair: Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo
Price: 6.55

5.0 out of 5 stars The Scandal of the Century, 20 Nov 2013

The notorious 'Profumo Affair' continuously crops up in many contexts. I remember it well as a contemporary. I found this book quite astonishing since it is really 'all about nothing', 'nothing of real importance', 'nothing that ever really threatened the country's security' and 'nothing that affected the lives of anyone beyond those directly involved'. The story was, however, the journalists' dream and the politicians' nightmare. It led to a suicide and a destroyed career, a revelation of greed that led to the establishment of the word 'rachhmanism' in the language to describe the behaviour of dishonest landlords and it seriously dented the image of poor Harold Macmillan who showed his weakness in a 'crisis'. It also altered the lives of two common prostitutes for whom the consequences were markedly different. There is much more than that in this story. It is about a sleazy world that disturbed a nation, revealed the misdemeanours of those who expect us to look up to them and left behind a story that were it fiction we might find it hard to believe. However, it makes a really good read and challenges us to consider the morality of our civilisation still revealed almost everyday in one press story or another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Building Historical Knowledge, 20 Nov 2013

Anyone who reads lots of history books will know many of the names that are found in this book. Probably, like me, they associate them with some vaguely remembered periods of time or distant places. This book provides a few dozen short portraits, each making clear why they are remembered. Put this on your tablet, read a portrait when you are waiting for an appointment, wasting time between journeys or waiting for school to come out. You will find reading these short biographies fascinating stuff. Also great for quiz buffs! Serious historians will also enjoy dipping into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Easy Introduction to the USA, 16 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent Atlas as you would expect. It seems to cover USA and US states thoroughly. I particularly find the page perv state section an introduction to the America I really don't know very well. More detail , I guess, than anyone would ever need.

One strange point. The book seems once to have belonged to a local library. I take it the seller checked its provenance

5.0 out of 5 stars For a patriot student in Scotland., 11 Nov 2013

The clear answer to the secessionists. We cannot stop them being foolish and throwing their economic stability, often propped up by the other countries in the Union. But there are advantages! New UK parliament would be without all those labour seats! Nice quality for a nice price. Everyone should have one!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Politics of Confusion, 31 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At 81, I look back on the eighties with clear memories. I was busy in those days and, like most people around me. kept up with the news. I knew most of what was 'going on' but this book has set me back on my heels to realise what a struggle for POWER existed and what kind of people were fighting it out. We have everything here, in brief within a lengthy book that is needed to cover it all- turmoil in the Labour party, trade unionists with an arrogance hard to believe, Militant Tendency and the Gang of Four, Thatcher and Howe, Wets and Dries, the Irish sore, Protest and 'Rent a Mob' and so on and so on. It is all here and a very good read. I found some sections rather dense when I was out of my comfort zone - in my case on economics and financial complexities like Monetarism but the book could not be more comprehensive within its size. It's a good few hours read but it's time well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do you get bored hanging around?, 31 Oct 2013

This review is from: Titans of History (Kindle Edition)
You go to the doctor's, miss the bus, wait for a colleague to arrive, wait for the rain to stop. These and a multitude of similar situations plague our lives. When you have a book, it is some relief but not very much use if the content is complex or the story full of suspense. All you do is lose track if you read in bite-size chunks and need to re-read it or miss out some important facts. The Titans books are ideal. Each snippet is, on my tablet, about 7 minutes reading time. You know the names of these people - Nebuchadnezzar, Sun Tsu, Hannibal, Caligula, Jesus (an interesting Jewish slant), Attila the Hun,Haroun al Raschid, Saladin , Ghengis Khan, Richard the Lion Heart, Eleanore of Aquitaine, Catherine the Great, Jane Austen and many many more. It's all very simple and obviously short but can stimulate you to find out more, become a master quiz player or simply feel just a little more 'educated' (the person who has forgotten more than most people ever learn). Go on; it's cheap, very good value for money and you won't feel so bored or tense waiting for the dentist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Buy, 17 Sep 2013

An outstanding bargain! Bearing in mind the extortionate cost of a new screen, it is the chjeapest thing I can remember buying for years. But it is not tat. It is well-designed, very strong and perfect for mixing in your pocket with money, keys etc.. It is also easy charge up batteries without taking it from the case. First class. Highly recommended. Every Apple user should have one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Now IO know why the ordinary man fearted the workhouse., 17 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a quick read; full of real life from first hand observation. Many of us will find an ancestor who finished up in the workhouse. I have several. It was a prison for people who were not wicked. A means of keeping the very poor, very poor! If you get emotional about the past, you might find it disturbing.

One to read for insight into a past age. The servants come out quite well! The lady's world still exists, i'm sure.
